Robelo Cecilio Agustin 1839 1916
Diccionario de Mitologia Nahuatl
440 pages. Quarto 11 ¼ " x 7 ¾ " bound green buckram with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. Second edition. .

Cecilio A Robelo 1839 - 1916 was an attorney by trade but passionately interested in the archaeology of Mexico and the foremost nahuatlato of his day. He was the first director of the Museum of Archaeology. This dictionary first published in parts in the Anales of the Museo 1905 & 08 was a ground-breaking undertaking matching the gods and goddesses of the Aztecs to their representations in the codices and archaeological remains. The volume is well illustrated for that reason although he did not manage to go beyond the letter "q" in this work: later editions by other hands have completed the work.

George McClelland Foster Jr born in Sioux Falls South Dakota on October 9 1913 died on May 18 2006 at his home in the hills above the campus of the University of California Berkeley where he served as a professor from 1953 to his retirement in 1979 when he became professor emeritus. His contributions to anthropological theory and practice still challenge us; in more than 300 publications his writings encompass a wide diversity of topics including acculturation long-term fieldwork peasant economies pottery making public health social structure symbolic systems technological change theories of illness and wellness humoral medicine in Latin America and worldview. The quantity quality and long-term value of his scholarly work led to his election to the National Academy of Sciences in 1976. Virtually all of his major publications have been reprinted and/or translated. Provenance from the executor of Foster's library laid in.

Condition:

Foster's stamp on title and date of acquiry 10/4/44 on front end paper spine sunned and gilt faded paste downs offset darkening else about very good. Copan: Home of the Mayan Gods
xiv166 pages with maps figures diagrams charts photographs many in color appendix bibliography and index. Folio 12" x 9" bound in original publisher's black cloth with silver lettering to spine and pictorial cover with pictorial end pages and "Maya" article laid in by David Stuart. Foreword by Gordon F Eckholm. First edition. Copán is an archaeological site of the Maya civilization located in the Copán Department of western Honduras not far from the border with Guatemala. It was the capital city of a major Classic period kingdom from the 5th to 9th centuries AD. The city was located in the extreme southeast of the Mesoamerican cultural region on the frontier with the Isthmo-Colombian cultural region and was almost surrounded by non-Maya peoples. In this fertile valley now lies a city of about 3000 a small airport and a winding road. Copán was occupied for more than two thousand years from the Early Preclassic period to the Postclassic. The city developed a distinctive sculptural style within the tradition of the lowland Maya perhaps to emphasize the Maya ethnicity of the city's rulers. The city has a historical record that spans the greater part of the Classic period and has been reconstructed in detail by archaeologists and epigraphers. Copán was a powerful city ruling a vast kingdom within the southern Maya area. The city suffered a major political disaster in AD 738 when Uaxaclajuun Ub'aah K'awiil one of the greatest kings in Copán's dynastic history was captured and executed by his former vassal the king of Quiriguá.5 This unexpected defeat resulted in a 17-year hiatus at the city during which time Copán may have been subject to Quiriguá in a reversal of fortunes. A significant portion of the eastern side of the acropolis has been eroded away by the Copán River although the river has since been diverted in order to protect the site from further damage. Condition: Light edge wear corners gently bumped spine head rubbed with splits else a very good copy. Museum of the American Indian hardcover
