Gilberti Maturino 1498? 1585 Compiled by Warren J. Benedict
Diccionario Grande De La Lengua De Michoacan
2 volumes: 704 pages with tables; 848 pages. Octavo 9" x 6 3/4" bound in original wrappers. Compiled by Warren J Benedict. First edition limited to 500 copies.

In the fall of 1965 Warren found in the John Carter Brown Library a very incomplete manuscript dictionary of the Tarascan language. In the catalog of the library it was indicated as a work of Father Gilberti who first publish the grammar 1558 and dictionary 1559 of the language. But the manuscript dictionary was very different than that of the dictionary published by Gilberti. Warren considered copying the document but because of the poor physical condition of the manuscript decided against doing so. In 1977 when Warren began to investigate further the life and writings of Brother Mathurin Gilberti he found in a bibliographic directory a quotation from a manuscript in the Latin American Library at Tulane indicating that it was a "Vocabulary Castilian-Tarasco-Tarasco and Castilian" written by Brother Gilberti. When asked about the content of the manuscript he was assured that the manuscript was published as the Gilberti vocabulary. He found that not only was it different in many ways from the published vocabulary of Gilbert but was a full version of which the dictionary of which the manuscript of the John Carter Brown contained only the last part. Since the manuscript in the Tulane library was completely legible and without major flaws it was possible to begin serious editorial work. So Warren called the manuscript of Tulane Text A. It consists of two parts: the Spanish-Tarasco part which has 130 leaves and the Tarasco-Spanish Part of 150 leaves. There was a note by the famous Mexican bibliophile Nicolás León indicating the provenance of the manuscript. This manuscript was an unpublished document in the hand of Father Gilberti. This vocabulary was produced after the one printed in Mexico in 1559 and therefore more copious and corrected. It was found among the books belonging to Mendoza in Guadalajara 1913 and bought in the Archdiocese. With the stamp on the title page is the "Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística"; but it is believed that it was part of Mendoza's collection because no files appear in the receipt proving that it had been donated in 1913 noted by Leon. Having satisfied his conscience Leon sold the manuscript to William Gates who in turn sold several photographic prints which are cited in the Newberry Library the Peabody Library and the Library of Congress. In 1924 Tulane bought the collection. The binding of the manuscript has a stamp of "Gates Collection" on the back of the cover. The original manuscript is written throughout in the same hand but has corrections and additions between the lines. Many of them are the original scribe but there are also many additions in another hand especially at the beginning of the Spanish-Tarasco part which may conflict sharply with the original. The manuscript of the John Carter Brown Library here called the Type B consisting of 148 leaves. This work is the compilation of all this material.

Condition:

Lightly soiled with gently bumped corners and light edge wear else a very good copy. Fimax Publicistas paperback

The Shorter Anthropological Papers of Franz Weidenreich 1939-1948: A Memorial Volume
vii 267 pages with figures tables charts plates and bibliography. Octavo 9" x 5 3/4" bound in original publisher's wrappers. First edition. Franz Weidenreich 7 June 1873 Edenkoben ¿ 11 July 1948 New York City was a Jewish German anatomist and physical anthropologist who studied evolution. Weidenreich studied at the University of Strasbourg where he earned a medical degree in 1899. From 1921 to 1924 he served as a Professor of anthropology at the University of Heidelberg and was a visiting professor at the University of Chicago in 1934. In 1935 he succeeded Canadian paleoanthropologist Davidson Black as honorary director of the Cenozoic Research Laboratory of the Geological Survey of China. Weidenreich was among the scientists to claim that Piltdown Man was a "chimera" a composite between two unrelated species long before fluoride analyses proved that Piltdown Man was a hoax.12 Weidenreich also renamed Gigantopithecus blacki to Giganthropus blacki based on a theory that primitive forms of man were much larger than the more recent ones. However as this theory is contradictory to the Cope-Depéret rule which states that in straight evolution lines of non-flying animals the size of species increases not the other way round it was rejected by Professor Dr. von Koenigswald when he returned from the Japanese concentration camp after the Second World War. As honorary director of the Cenozoic Research Laboratory he also studied fossils of the Peking Man then known as Sinanthropus pekinensis unearthed at Zhoukoudian China. Weidenreich originated the "Weidenreich Theory of Human Evolution" based on his examination of Peking Man. Being an anatomist Weidenreich observed numerous anatomical characteristics that Peking Man had in common with modern Asians this led to his Polycentric evolution model of racial origins. Peter H. Wyden American journalist and writer was one of his nephews. Condition: Previous owner's stamp on front wrapper front heal corners chipped spine sunned and ends chipped else a very good copy. Graesse III 370. Winsor I 369-70 First edition.

One of the principal works in the celebrated literary dispute over the origins of the American aborigines. The controversy began in 1642 when Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius published his De Origine Gentium Americanorum in which he postulated that all of North America except for Yucatan was inhabited by the descendants of pre-Columbian Scandinavian colonists that the Peruvians were from China and that the regions south of Peru were peopled by the Moluccans. His theory aroused an antagonist in Joannes de Laet who counter-posed that the Scythian race furnished the predominant population of America. Horn better known by his Latinized name Hornius entered the debate at the suggestion of De Laet whose view he supported but he also held to later additions from the Phoenicians and Carthaginians on the Atlantic side and from the Chinese on the Pacific. The work contains references to early travels and accounts of America and discussion of the Huron and Iroquois tribes of Canada.

Condition:

Rebacked signature clipped from front free end paper which is partially detached early book plate to front pastedown inked library stamp to final page corners chipped title with some old ink numbers else a good copy.
Adrian Valcq hardcover

Pimentel Francisco 1823 1893
Memoria sobre las causas que han originado la situacion actual de la raza indígena de México y medios de remediarla
241 pages. Octavo 8 1/4" x 5" bound in half leather with gilt lettering to spine and stiff boards. First edition.

In the mid 1800's Mexico's population was forty percent Indian. Most had a subsistence economy which was out side the nation's main stream and condemned the native population to poverty and malnutrition. The Mexican government began to divide the communal lands of the Indians into farms ejidos which they opposed. Liberals such as Pimentel thought that the Indian was an obstacle to progress of the nation. The Mexican intellectuals thought one of the best ways to integrate the natives was to encourage European immigration and to eliminate the indigenous languages. Pimentel in his Political economy applied to landed property in Mexico 1866 asked "Who is to blame for this laziness improvidence and squandering of our poor class" To which he answered the same day Indian laborer. Two years earlier Pimentel's Report on the causes that have led to the current situation of the indigenous race and the means to remedy the situation gives a concise history of the Indian and discusses solutions to what the intellectuals considered a problem. This is one of the fundamental works which began to frame the ruling establishment's actions toward the indigenous populations and which eventually led them to assist the side with the revolutionists in 1910.

Condition:

Previous owner's name on front end paper boards and edges rubbed and chipped corners bumped else a good to very good copy of a scarce item. Author: Pineda Vicente from the library of Professor George M Foster Historia De Las Sublevaciones Indigenas Habidas En El Estado De Chiapas. Gramatica De La Lengua Tzel - Tal Que Habla La Generalidad De Los Habitantes De Los Pueblos Que Quedan al Oriente y al Noreste Del Estado y Diccionario De La Misma
2 parts: 340 pages with fold out table; 1433 errata pages. Octavo 8 ¾ " x 6 ½ " bound in cloth with gilt lettering to spine. From the library of George M Foster. 1st edition.

Tzeltal is a member of the Mayan family of languages and is spoken mainly in the State of Chiapas Mexico. Some of the earliest written documents in Tzeltal are Fray Domingo de Ara's Vocabulario de Lengua Tzeldal Según el Orden de Copanabastla which is believed to have been written in 1571 and Manuel Díez's 1675 work Conciones en Lingua Tzeldaica. There are currently at least six different dialects of Tzeltal spoken in Chiapas: Northern Ocosingo Bachajon West Central Tenejapa Cancuc East Central Oxchuc Chanal Amatenango Southern Aguacatenango Villa las Rosas Teopisca South Western Copanaguastla extinct Comitan and the nearly extinct South Eastern Trinitaria Lagos de Montebello.
