‎Seler Eduard Georg 1849 1922‎

‎Gesammelte Abhandlungen zur Amerikanischen Sprach-und Alterthumskunde‎

‎3 volumes; xxviii862 pages with two fold out plates and numerous illustrations; xxxvi1107 pages with numerous illustrations; xxx729 pages with four maps including frontispiece 43 plates which one folds out and numerous black and white illustrations. Royal octavo 9 7/8" x 6 3/4". Bound in half leather with marbled boards. Three of five volumes. First edition.

A few general observations on the contents of Gesammelte Abhandlungen are in order. Altogether the set includes 127 separate articles. Most were originally published in such well-known outlets of the 1887-1919 period as ZeitschriJt jilr Ethnologie Globus Science Internationales Archiv filr Ethnographie Ethnologisches Notisblatt Mittheilungen der Anthropologischen Gesellschajt in Wien Verojentlichungen aus dem Kdniglichen Museum filr Volkerkunde Berlin and the proceedings of the various International Congresses of Americanists held during these years. Occasionally these articles on being reprinted in the various volumes of Gesammelte Abhundlungen were substantially enlarged and revised by their author. A few of the most important papers were written especially for these volumes such as his well-known translations with copious notes of the Sahaguntine chants to the gods Vol. I his classic account of Tarascan culture at Contact Vol. III and his important descriptions of the ruins of La Quemada Vol. III and Teotihuacan Vol. V. Breaking them down into categories to illustrate again the great breadth of Seler's scholarly labors approximately 10 are devoted to studies of the Mexican codices 3 to Mexican calendrics 20 to Maya hieroglyphic writing and calendrics 3 to mythology 2 to general Mesoamerican linguistics 29 to analyses of archaeological objects or groups of objects 13 to descriptions always well illustrated of major ruins 6 to accounts of archaeological travels 14 to what might be called "general ethnohistory" 4 to direct translations of Nahuatl texts 3 to recent ethnography 3 to Conquest history I to geography and 4 on miscellaneous topics. In addition to this coverage of Mesoamerican matters which consumes the vast bulk of the volumes 4 articles deal with North America 3 with Central America and 5 with South America Andean region. The small number of articles specifically concerned with Mexican codices does not accurately reflect Seler's contribution to this field since as stated above his major works here were long monographs each thoroughly analyzing a major surviving specimen. American Anthropologist Volume 65: p1100

Seler was born in Crossen an der Oder Prussia on December 5 1849; attended Joachimsthalsche Gymnasium Berlin 1863-1869; attended University of Breslau before serving a year of military duty in 1870-71 during the Franco-Prussian War; returned to his studies at University of Berlin in 1871 and passed his Oberlehrer examination in 1875; taught science and mathematics until he was forced to resign because of poor health in 1879; moved to Trieste and began studying linguistics and his interest in Pre-Columbian ethnography and archeology emerged; received his doctorate University of Leipzig 1887; director American Division Königlichen Museum für Völkerkunde in Berlin 1904-22; his published papers and monographs made fundamental contributions to studies of aboriginal American linguistics archaeology native history and ethnography; died in 1922.

Condition:

Corners bumped and rubbed bookplate on front pastedowns spines lightly rubbed. ‎Gilberti Maturino 1498? 1585 Compiled by Warren J. Benedict‎

‎Diccionario Grande De La Lengua De Michoacan‎

‎2 volumes: 704 pages with tables; 848 pages. Octavo 9" x 6 3/4" bound in original wrappers. Compiled by Warren J Benedict. First edition limited to 500 copies.

In the fall of 1965 Warren found in the John Carter Brown Library a very incomplete manuscript dictionary of the Tarascan language. In the catalog of the library it was indicated as a work of Father Gilberti who first publish the grammar 1558 and dictionary 1559 of the language. But the manuscript dictionary was very different than that of the dictionary published by Gilberti. Warren considered copying the document but because of the poor physical condition of the manuscript decided against doing so. In 1977 when Warren began to investigate further the life and writings of Brother Mathurin Gilberti he found in a bibliographic directory a quotation from a manuscript in the Latin American Library at Tulane indicating that it was a "Vocabulary Castilian-Tarasco-Tarasco and Castilian" written by Brother Gilberti. When asked about the content of the manuscript he was assured that the manuscript was published as the Gilberti vocabulary. He found that not only was it different in many ways from the published vocabulary of Gilbert but was a full version of which the dictionary of which the manuscript of the John Carter Brown contained only the last part. Since the manuscript in the Tulane library was completely legible and without major flaws it was possible to begin serious editorial work. So Warren called the manuscript of Tulane Text A. It consists of two parts: the Spanish-Tarasco part which has 130 leaves and the Tarasco-Spanish Part of 150 leaves. There was a note by the famous Mexican bibliophile Nicolás León indicating the provenance of the manuscript. This manuscript was an unpublished document in the hand of Father Gilberti. This vocabulary was produced after the one printed in Mexico in 1559 and therefore more copious and corrected. It was found among the books belonging to Mendoza in Guadalajara 1913 and bought in the Archdiocese. With the stamp on the title page is the "Sociedad Mexicana de Geografía y Estadística"; but it is believed that it was part of Mendoza's collection because no files appear in the receipt proving that it had been donated in 1913 noted by Leon. Having satisfied his conscience Leon sold the manuscript to William Gates who in turn sold several photographic prints which are cited in the Newberry Library the Peabody Library and the Library of Congress. In 1924 Tulane bought the collection. The binding of the manuscript has a stamp of "Gates Collection" on the back of the cover. The original manuscript is written throughout in the same hand but has corrections and additions between the lines. Many of them are the original scribe but there are also many additions in another hand especially at the beginning of the Spanish-Tarasco part which may conflict sharply with the original. The manuscript of the John Carter Brown Library here called the Type B consisting of 148 leaves. This work is the compilation of all this material.

Condition:

Lightly soiled with gently bumped corners and light edge wear else a very good copy. ‎Two volumes: 8viii334 pages with engraved dedication in script engraved supplemental pictorial title page and two plates; 639116 pages with engraved supplemental pictorial title page appendix and one engraved plate. Octavo 8" x 6" bound in brown leather with gilt lettering to spine. Plates by J. Amillo. Sabin 51215 Palau 183810 First edition.

An important work on the Indians of Mexico especially the Tarascans of Michoacan written in Mexico by Benito Maria de Moxo and printed here by his nephew Juras Reales. "A valuable set of dissertations upon the natives and history of the New World written by Don Benito Maria de Moxo Archbishop of Charcas whose papers fell into the hands of his nephew Luis Maria de Moxo y de Lopez and were printed by the latter under his own name without sufficient acknowledgement" - Sabin. The work contains fourteen essays by Benito Maria Moxo y Francoli written in 1805 in Michoacan where he served as auxiliary bishop from 1803 to 1805. The varied topics include Indian music; human sacrifice; Tarascan pre-Columbian painting; geometry; arithmetic and hieroglyphic writing; Black slavery in the Spanish colonies; and two essays on natural history. The appendix prints Moxo's 1807 speech in response to the British invasion of Buenos Aires. The fine engraved plates by J. Amillo include a scene of missionaries playing music for the Indians; a detailed representation of "Idolo Huitzilopochtli" lively dancing Huitzilopochtli with mask wearing feather headdress and holding a shield; and a stone idol on a broken base. A later edition appeared under the title Cartas Mejicanas in 1837

Moxó y de Francoli 1763-1816 a controversial writer of the Spanish-American Enlightenment was accused of collaborating with both monarchists and revolutionaries. His work is also marked by ambiguity due to his loyalty to Spain and his sympathy for the original inhabitants of Mesoamerica resulting in a complicated example of literary colonialism. This work explores Mesoamerican archaeology astronomy pictorial codices human sacrifice mathematics comparative study of suicide among Native Americans and Europeans pre-Columbian music and other unusual anthropological subjects such as the Tarascan painted manuscript discussed by Glass. Dismissed are the claims by Robertson and De Pauw that Amerindian culture is inferior though the author rebukes Voltaire for minimizing the extent of human sacrifice and cannibalism among the Aztecs. He resolutely defends the Spanish conquest. Perhaps the most important result of the work was its contribution to an upsurge in interest in Mesoamerican archaeology and art. The copperplate engravings are handsome and well executed.

Condition:

Modern rebinding with new end papers. A very good set. En la Imprenta de Jose Torner hardcover books‎

‎De originibus americanis‎

‎xx282 pages with title printed in red and black. Duodecimo 6" x 3 3/4" bound in full leather with blind stamped ruled edges. Sabin 33014. TPL 6327. Field 717. JCB II 418. Leclerc 290. Rahir 2056. Graesse III 370. Winsor I 369-70 First edition.

One of the principal works in the celebrated literary dispute over the origins of the American aborigines. The controversy began in 1642 when Dutch jurist Hugo Grotius published his De Origine Gentium Americanorum in which he postulated that all of North America except for Yucatan was inhabited by the descendants of pre-Columbian Scandinavian colonists that the Peruvians were from China and that the regions south of Peru were peopled by the Moluccans. His theory aroused an antagonist in Joannes de Laet who counter-posed that the Scythian race furnished the predominant population of America. Horn better known by his Latinized name Hornius entered the debate at the suggestion of De Laet whose view he supported but he also held to later additions from the Phoenicians and Carthaginians on the Atlantic side and from the Chinese on the Pacific. The work contains references to early travels and accounts of America and discussion of the Huron and Iroquois tribes of Canada.

Condition:

Rebacked signature clipped from front free end paper which is partially detached early book plate to front pastedown inked library stamp to final page corners chipped title with some old ink numbers else a good copy.
Adrian Valcq hardcover books‎

‎Anthropology Participant Observation Zuni Cushing Frank Hamilton; Hillers John K.‎

‎Photograph of Frank Hamilton Cushing in Zuni Dress c. 1882-1883 Inscribed by Cushing on the Mount‎

‎Zuni Pueblo / Washington 1883. Albumen photograph 7 ¼ x 9 ¼ on 8 x 10 inch mount. Very Good. Frank Hamilton Cushing was an ethnologist and anthropologist who helped pioneer the practice of participant observation by living among Zuni in New Mexico. He joined James Stevenson's anthropological expedition to New Mexico undertaken by the United States Bureau of Ethnography in 1879. Enthralled by Zuni culture he lived with the Zuni from 1879 until a scandal related to his advocacy work forced him to return to Washington in 1884.

John K. Hillers the German-born photographer of the American West was a photographer for the Bureau of American Ethnography from 1879-1881 during which time he took this picture of Cushing in Zuni dress. Cushing - we think - has inscribed the photograph on the verso as follows: "Tenatsali / Medicine Flower of the Spaces / Younger Priesthood of the Bow / War Chief of Zuni / Adopted American Name /Frank Hamilton Cushing. "

A very good example of an important image with some light fading. Scarce in commerce with no copies in auction records. A very good example with some fading. From the estate of De Lancey W. Gill and Agnes Gill Webster. Gill was a prolific photographer of American Indians who worked for the Bureau of Ethnography in the early part of the twentieth century. unknown books‎

‎The French Sugar Business in the Eighteenth Century‎

‎Baton Rouge: Louisiana Strate University Press 1988. Hardcover. Green cloth covered boards. Fine in fine dust wrapper. 185 pages. 23.5 x 16 cm. At the beginning of the eighteenth century sugar in France was still a luxury commodity imported in small quantities and consumed only by the very rich. By the time of the revolution sugar was so popular that riots occurred when its price rose unreasonably. In spite of its importance the sugar business has been largely ignored by historians. This comprehensive study covers all aspects of the sugar business from the procurement of African slaves who were forced to work the sugar plantations through the process of growing sugar and refining distribution and consumption.
