br. Friedrich A. von Hayek è stato nel Novecento il maggiore esponente della cultura liberale. Egli offre qui un suggestivo e agile affresco delle idee che si trovano alla base del liberalismo e delle vicende storiche prodotte dal movimento liberale. Il liberalismo è libertà individuale di scelta, che si rende possibile solo tramite la limitazione della sfera d'intervento del potere pubblico. È il "governo della legge", che si sostituisce al "governo degli uomini". E tuttavia lo schieramento liberale ha due anime: quella rigorosamente evoluzionistica, prevalente nella tradizione britannica, e quella razionalistica, prevalente nella tradizione continentale europea. Esse hanno trovato convergenza su alcuni "postulati essenziali", quali la libertà di pensiero, di parola, di stampa. Ma l'accordo ha carattere "meramente verbale": perché il liberalismo di tipo britannico ha assunto come "valore supremo" la libertà individuale, mentre il liberalismo di tipo continentale si è venuto quasi a identificare con il movimento democratico. Il che complica le cose. La democrazia e il liberalismo si occupano infatti di due differenti problemi. La prima si chiede a chi spetti governare; e la sua risposta è che tocca ai cittadini nel loro insieme. Il secondo pone invece la questione relativa all'estensione dell'intervento del potere pubblico; e la sua risposta è che quel potere deve svolgere un compito residuale, in modo da dare spazio alla più libera cooperazione sociale. brossura Questo volume - considerato ormai un classico delle scienze sociali - contiene saggi scritti da Hayek nei vent'anni successivi alla Seconda guerra mondiale. Nella prima parte, vengono trattati temi di teoria della conoscenza, carichi di implicazioni etiche e politiche: il problema dei fenomeni complessi, la critica del «costruttivismo », la distinzione tra il razionalismo cartesiano e il razionalismo critico, e così via. Nella seconda parte, vengono delineati i princìpi di un ordine sociale liberale e si individuano gli errori di quegli intellettuali che hanno ceduto alla mitologia collettivistica. La terza parte è invece dedicata al rapporto tra politica ed economia e a tematiche più specificamente economiche, come per esempio il pieno impiego e l'inflazione. La consapevolezza dei limiti della ragione è lo strumento con cui Hayek combatte contro ogni terrorismo intellettuale, basato sulla «presunzione fatale» di una conoscenza superiore. La nostra conoscenza, per Hayek come per Popper, è fallibile, ma Hayek sottolinea un altro grande principio gnoseologico: quello della dispersione delle nostre conoscenze relative a situazioni particolari di tempo e di luogo. «Fallibilità» e «ignoranza» diventano in tal modo i fondamenti della libertà individuale e della società aperta.
