In Francia durante la Rivoluzione si insiste sulla necessità di creare spazi dove conservare le opere tolte dai "luoghi tenebrosi" nei quali erano state tenute, per restituirle al popolo in una specie di biblioteca dove andare a istruirsi. Jacques-Louis David insiste che il neonato museo del Louvre debba costituire una scuola dove "i maestri condurranno gli allievi, il padre vi accompagnerà il figlio. II giovane vedendo le produzioni del genio, sentirà nascere in lui quel germe d'arte o di scienza al quale la natura lo chiama". La natura, non Dio. I musei sono dunque istituzioni laiche che nascono come negazione del sacro, nascono dunque come templi della capacità umana, dove Cristo è sostituito con Prometeo. Una nuova religione secolarizzata di cui le opere sono le reliquie e i testi sacri. Se per Wolfe i sacerdoti sono i critici, Jencks recupera le teorie di Saint-Simon secondo cui gli artisti sono chiamati a "esercitare un'influenza positiva sulla società, una vera funzione sacerdotale".
