‎br. Il grande architetto Frank Lloyd Wright diceva di essere stato vigorosamente indirizzato verso l'architettura dalla lettura di questo libro. Le sette lampade sono un appassionato discorso sui principi dell'architettura, tenuto sul filo di una costante analogia tra esperienza etica ed estetica. Sottoposte al vaglio e considerate «sub specie architecturae» sono le leggi fondate sulla natura dell'uomo, non sul suo sapere, che l'autore organizza attorno a sette grandi capisaldi, sorta di spiriti guardiani che hanno il compito di indicare i termini entro cui correttamente si pone la pratica professionale. All'interno di questa cornice trovano posto temi cruciali delle riflessioni sull'architettura precedenti l'avvento del Movimento Moderno, quali il ruolo della decorazione e quindi l'ambito proprio della fantasia e della gratuità, la necessità della memoria, l'assunzione come valore dell'arditezza e dell'irregolarità, espressione del dinamismo vitale. La scrittura di Ruskin ha una forte componente emozionale, lontana dalla razionalità di un Viollet-le-Duc, e l'opera si configura come la proposta articolata e ricca di digressioni di una architettura che sia compagnia salutare per l'uomo, veicolo di valori e di tradizioni costruttive.‎

Twentieth Century Physics I p. 63.<br><br>"By this time Rutherford had recognized the need for skilled chemical assistance in his radioactivity investigations and had secured the services of a young chemistry demonstrator at McGill Frederick Soddy. Together they removed most of the activity from a thorium compound calling the active matter thorium X; but they too found that the X product lost its activity and that the thorium recovered its original level in a few weeks. Had Becquerel's similar finding for uranium not been immediately at hand they might have searched for errors in their work. In early 1902 however they began to plot the activities as a function of time seeing evidence of a fundamental relationship in the equality of the time for thorium X to decay to half value and thorium to double in activity.<br>This work led directly to Rutherford's greatest achievement at McGill for with Soddy he advanced the still-accepted explanation of radioactivity. <br>Their iconoclastic theory variously called transformation transmutation and disintegration first appeared in 1902 and was refined in the following year. Although alchemy had long been exorcised from scientific chemistry they declared that "radioactivity is at once an atomic phenomenon and the accompaniment of a chemical change in which new kinds of matter are produced." The radioactive atoms decay they argued each decay signifying the transmutation of a parent into a daughter element and each type of atom undergoing its transformation in a characteristic period. This insight set the course for their next several years of research for the task was then to order all the known radioelements into decay series and to search for additional members of these families." They do this by means of the analysis of literary sources from very diverse backgrounds, both geographically and linguistically speaking: the investigation ranges from medieval Spain, through the Byzantine Empire and the Crusader states, to late medieval and early modern Turkey. This interdisciplinary enquiry by an international group of scholars enables us to define the modes of transmission of medieval texts and how they were memorized as well as to decipher how they were read and appropriated. In addition, the book suggests a methodological basis for research into indices of orality and for analysis of the intertextual links between literary works.
