Lo scatolone di vetro è il comune risultato delle diverse tendenze che hanno animato quest'arte negli ultimi cinquant'anni: sull'impronta di Gropius, il celebre fondatore del Bauhaus, e Le Corbusier, massimo teorico del razionalismo, gli architetti europei sbarcati in America negli anni Trenta esercitarono un vero e proprio colonialismo intellettuale. Nacque così l'International Style, che ispirò palazzi di vetro, cemento e ferro, pressoché identici: privi di colore e linee curve. Based on several new first sources among which are Joseph Johnson's letters only discovered in 1990 Johnson was her publisher and Thomas Paine's and other letters referring to her American lover Gilbert Imlay. The letters reveal a more human side of Wollstonecraft- that of a woman who assumed much of the financial responsibility of her siblings but also a woman revelling on love - and one with a sense of humor. In a letter to Imlay her lover when she is trying to come up with a word to name their relationship she poses the suggestion 'shall I ask the little twitcher' Illustrated with photographs. "Come orientamento generale, basterà dire quanto segue: i "Concetti fondamentali" sono sorti dalla necessità di offrire una più salda base all'analisi della storia dell'arte; non a un giudizio di valore, dunque, di cui qui non si parla, bensì alla definizione dello stile. A tale scopo è sommamente interessante conoscere la forma rappresentativa dinanzi a cui ci si trova volta per volta (conviene parlare di forme della rappresentazione piuttosto che di forme visive). La forma della rappresentazione visiva non è ovviamente qualcosa di esteriore, ma ha un'importanza determinante anche per il contenuto della rappresentazione, e in questo senso la storia del succedersi dei concetti figurativi è già storia dell'arte. Il modo di vedere o, come preferiamo dire, della rappresentazione visiva, non è sempre e ovunque identico, avendo, come tutto ciò che vive, una sua evoluzione. Vi sono gradi nella rappresentazione visiva di cui lo storico dell'arte deve tener conto. Si parla di modi di vedere arcaici e "immaturi", così come si parla, d'altra parte, di periodi di "arte matura" e di "arte tardiva". (...) Ora, nel presente volume non si vuole offrire un compendio di storia, ma si cerca di stabilire certi criteri di valutazione con cui si possono misurare, con una certa esattezza, i mutamenti storici e i caratteri nazionali."
