br. Una pandemia globale. Medici eroi, crisi economiche, psicosi collettive e l'isolamento come difesa preventiva. Nonostante la descrizione calzi perfettamente con i primi mesi del 2020, siamo a Napoli, è il 1836 e il virus di allora si chiama cholera morbus. Il colera. Anche in quel caso il contagio era partito da est: dall'India si era propagato nel resto dell'Asia, e attraverso le rotte commerciali era entrato in Europa. Dopo aver devastato gli stati dell'Alta Italia aveva raggiunto i confini del Regno delle Due Sicilie, travolgendo il governo del giovane Ferdinando II di Borbone. L'ingresso del colera a Napoli viene accompagnato dalla grancassa di scienziati allarmisti e politici riformatori; dal nord arrivano testimonianze tragiche e alcuni consigli da parte dei medici che hanno già affrontato il morbo. Tra le poche informazioni sicure, come avverte in una lettera un dottore di Padova, c'è che il colera «si trasmette esclusivamente per mezzo delle comunicazioni cogl'individui che sono infetti di questo germe, o per l'uso di cose che lo nascondono; che comparisce nei luoghi in cui si operano queste comunicazioni». Man mano che i bollettini sulla diffusione dell'epidemia indicano un'allarmante crescita dei contagi, la corte dei Borbone reagisce a colpi di decreti regi: istituisce una Commissione superiore di sanità e una task force «per la conservazione della salute pubblica»; vengono chiusi i confini del regno e a ogni persona che si presenta alle porte della città è chiesta una certificazione che attesti la necessità dello spostamento; le lezioni vengono sospese; i medici dotati di speciali dispositivi sanitari; scienziati e politici raccomandano particolare cura nell'igiene personale... Attraverso una ricostruzione storica minuziosa, Gigi Di Fiore ci guida lungo la vertigine del parallelismo storico, illuminando una società terribilmente vicina a noi, in cui appaiono evidenti le similitudini con il presente ma da cui, allo stesso tempo, emergono i problemi che oggi come in passato le amministrazioni hanno faticato a risolvere. Nel gioco, spesso fallace, dei corsi e ricorsi storici, scopriamo che, nonostante i secoli trascorsi, nonostante i progressi della medicina, l'ignoto che allora sconvolse il mondo è identico all'ignoto di oggi.
