Nebst der Tätigkeit als Reallehrer in Schaffhausen war er auch ein Bakterienforscher und -entdecker, ein hervorragender Prähistoriker sowie Entdecker u. Erforscher verschiedener steinzeitlicher Niederlassungen in der Schweiz. Daneben war er Erziehungsrat, Mitglied im kant. Kirchenrat, Ehrenvizepräsident des Kongresses für Erziehung und Unterricht im Chicago. Im Jahre 1906 wurde er vom Bundesrat an den 13. Internat.
