L'autore non tenta una descrizione minuziosa di ogni possibile adattamento, ma si interroga piuttosto sulla logica del meccanismo adattativo; sul perché, ad esempio, questo o quel gruppo di organismi abbia scelto un determinato sistema di regolazione e non un altro, e se sia possibile individuare, al di là delle differenze secondarie, un modello regolativo caratteristico per batteri, piante o animali, e se esso sia lo stesso per gruppi così diversi come i vertebrati o gli insetti. Caratteristica fondamentale della vita è di potersi continuamente adattare alle variabili condizioni ambientali: si adattano le specie attraverso il processo evolutivo dando luogo a specie diverse o varietà che hanno migliori possibilità di sopravvivere in un nuovo habitat; si adattano le singole cellule di cui un organismo complesso è composto variando continuamente il livello della loro attività, eventualmente mutando la propria struttura, in relazione alle necessità dell'organismo imposte dall'ambiente. L'usuale distinzione tra due tipi di adattamento quello «genetico», che conduce nell'arco di innumerevoli generazioni a un aumento della fitness delle popolazioni, e quello «fisiologico», inteso come un adeguamento dell'organismo che non implica alterazioni della costituzione genetica dell'individuo appare fuorviante in quanto non tiene conto dell'esistenza, a un certo livello di organizzazione, di una vasta gamma di forme intermedie. Proponendosi di ridurre il ruolo dell'apprendimento puramente mnemonico nello studio del vivente, l'autore non tenta una descrizione minuziosa di ogni possibile adattamento, ma si interroga sulla logica del meccanismo adattativo; sul perché ad esempio questo o quel gruppo di organismi abbia scelto un determinato sistema di regolazione e non un altro, e se sia possibile individuare al di là delle differenze secondarie, un modello regolativo caratteristico per batteri, piante o animali, e se esso sia lo stesso per gruppi cosi diversi come i vertebrati o gli insetti. Giorgio Morpurgo è ordinario di Genetica presso l'Università di Perugia. II libro analizza le fonti settecentesche e i primi inizi della biologia dell'antropologia, attraverso la ricostruzione di cinque diverse storie. La prima è quella delle teorie evoluzionistiche troppo spesso ridotta a una serie di «precorrimenti» del darwinismo e qui considerata invece nei suoi caratteri specifici. La seconda storia concerne le polemiche sulla classificazione della natura vivente e fornisce in particolare una nuova interpretazione della celebre controversia sorta tra Linneo e Buffon. La terza a è quella che vede progressivamente minacciata la «sovranità della fisica» nelle sciences de la vie e che conduce, attraverso la crisi del meccanicismo, ala nascita della biologia come scienza autonoma. La quarta storia concerne le polemiche sulla classificazione dell'uomo nel regno animale e la fondazione di un'antropologia fisica considerata capace di spiegare anche l'universo culturale umano. La quinta storia, infine, è quella poco nota della diffusione di una prima forma di socio-biologia, di ispirazione lamarckiana, la cui analisi può consentire di vedere molti luoghi comuni sull'affermazione del cosiddetto «social-darwinismo». Il libro nella sua interezza si inserisce nel contesto di quella particolare rivalutazione della cultura sette-ottocentesca, che non senza fondamento ha condotto a parlare di una «seconda rivoluzione scientifica». Giulio Basanti (Lucca 1949) è professore associato di Storia della scienza nell'Università di Firenze. Tra le sue pubblicazioni dedicate alla storia della biologia segnaliamo il saggio su Lamarck Dalla storia naturale alla storia della natura (Feltrinelli 1979) e il volume sulle Teorie dell'evoluzione nell'Ottocento (Le Monnier 1980). Attualmente si interessa alla fondazione e alle attività delle prime società antropologiche.
