Si de nombreux physiciens ou astrophysiciens soutiennent des positions spiritualistes, c'est beaucoup plus rare de la part d'un généticien. C'est donc un événement de voir Francis S. Collins, qui a dirigé l'un des plus grands projets scientifique de tous les temps - le décryptage du génome humain -, expliquer pourquoi l'évolution de l'univers et de la vie (qui n'a, selon lui, nécessité aucune autre intervention que celle des forces naturelles) est compatible avec la foi chrétienne. Du big bang à l'homme, en passant par les premières cellules vivantes, cet ouvrage nous entraîne, avec une exceptionnelle clarté, à la découverte de grandes questions qui concernent autant la science que la religion (y compris celles des miracles ou du mal, à travers son expérience de la souffrance et de la mort avec des patients atteints de maladies génétiques). Malgré tous les troubles de nos comportements, l'existence de la moralité lui paraît être le signe distinctif montrant que l'homme, s'il est le produit de l'évolution, est néanmoins un être unique ayant une dimension spirituelle. Le livre vaut aussi par la description du parcours de son auteur, passé d'un athéisme virulent à une foi profonde au fur et à mesure de son action avec les malades et les mourants, mais aussi au cours de ses découvertes du génome humain, ce " langage de Dieu ", comme il l'appelle".
