‎« Mes recherches m’ont fait connaitre des faits qui peuvent augmenter la confiance dans l’innoculation de la vaccine et à détruire les dernières objections qu’on a opposées à cette pratique si utile » (431-432). Il cite des observations faites en février 1799 permettant de distinguer la vraie vaccine : « la vaccine bleue de Jenner », des fausses vaccines (pustules, « de vent », blanches, noires ou encore de couleur « claire-jaune» ), distinction que « quelques détracteurs de la vaccine [appellent) un échappement par la porte de derrière (en italique dans le texte), comme a fait le docteur Vaumes, « dans une déclaration qui a été complettement (sic) réfutée par moi, dans la Gazette de Hambourg », et par quelques autres. Jenner lui-même, a rencontré des cas de fausse vaccine. Hellwag, après avoir rapporté des faits anciens, cite des cas d’inoculations de la petite vérole faites par ses soins, dans lesquels « la vertu préservative (…) de la vaccine se confirma parfaitement » (438). Christoph Friedrich HELLWAG (Calw [Würtemberg], 1754 – Eutin [Holstein], 1835), Médecin de la Principauté de Lübeck, dans laquelle, après avoir vacciné sa propre fille en juin 1800, il introduisit la vaccination contre la variole en 1801(wikiwand.com/de). Par ailleurs, Hellwag est cité dans « Vaccine et vaccination avant Jenner : une querelle d’antériorité » [Pierre Darmon, in « Histoire , économie et société », 1984, (3-4, pp.583-592)] ; cet auteur dénonce les pratiques d’un « lobby anti-jennerien », dès les années 1800, « né d’une coalition hétéroclite d’inoculateurs nostalgiques, d’antivaccinateurs , dont les témoignages (…) ne font que souligner les limites de leur sagacité et le génie de Jenner ». Hellwag est dans le lot… Pourtant, il semble bien que ce dernier n’ait jamais voulu minimiser le rôle Jenner ; simplement il a énuméré des cas de « vaccination » empiriques, autrefois pratiquées dans le duché d’Holstein, de la même manière que Jenner avait pu en observer dans la campagne anglaise… Dans ce volume, le texte le plus important est l’Éloge de GALVANI, par J.-L. Alibert (pp. I-CLXVI) en tête du volume ; le même éditeur en donnera une édition séparée, l’année suivante, An X (avec erreurs de pagination). Une autre réédition, avec d’autres éloges, Paris, Compart, 1806, parfois présentée comme l’édition originale… Un traduction italienne, en 1802, à Bologne. On trouvera des contributions de PINEL [… et sur le caractère apparent ou réel des hermaphrodites], et une traduction de James HENDY du « Treatise on the glandular disease of Barbadoes », paru en 1784 : « Maladie glandulaire de Barbade », avec 2 planches dépliantes, en copie inverse des originales.
