Il Silmarillion
br. "Il Silmarillion", iniziato nel 1917 e la cui elaborazione è stata proseguita da Tolkien fino alla morte, rappresenta il tronco da cui si sono diramate tutte le sue successive opere narrative. "Opera prima", dunque, essa costituisce il repertorio mitico di Tolkien, quello da cui è derivata la filiazione delle sue favole: "Lo Hobbit", "Il Signore degli Anelli", "Il cacciatore di Draghi". "Il Silmarillion", che comprende cinque racconti legati come i capitoli di un'unica storia sacra, narra la parabola di una caduta: dalla "musica degli inizi", il momento cosmogonico, alla guerra di Elfi e Uomini contro l'Avversario. L'ultimo dei racconti costituisce l'antecedente immediato del "Signore degli Anelli".

Roverandom. Le avventure di un cane alato
ill., br. Mentre è in vacanza nel 1925 il piccolo Michael, cinque anni, perde l'amatissimo cane sulla spiaggia. Suo padre, J.R.R. Tolkien, per consolarlo gli racconta la storia di un cane di nome Rover che, trasformato in un minuscolo giocattolo da un mago, affronta una tumultuosa girandola di avventure. Rover finisce nella vetrina di un negozio di giocattoli, poi tra le mani di un bambino che lo smarrisce. Cominciano così le mirabolanti peripezie di Roverandom, come viene ribattezzato, che lo portano a viaggiare a dorso di gabbiano fino alla luna, dove impara a volare, e poi in un palazzo sottomarino abitato da fate, gnomi e sirene. Solo allora l'incantesimo potrà essere rotto, solo allora Roverandom potrà realizzare il suo desiderio più grande: tornare a casa come un cane normale.

ill., br. Húrin è un cavaliere, fraterno amico del suo re; è sposato con Morwen e ne ha avuto un primo figlio, Túrin. Quando Túrin è ancora un bambino, Húrin deve partire per combattere contro il perfido signore del male Morgoth, che prima lo cattura e poi lo tortura, per farsi dire dove si sono rifugiate le truppe superstiti. Poiché Húrin resiste, il signore del male lo minaccia: se non confesserà, a pagare sarà la sua famiglia. Per fortuna, nel frattempo, la saggia Morwen decide di allontanare Túrin, e lo manda da un re amico, Thingol. Túrin cresce e a diciassette anni si sente pronto per diventare anche lui cavaliere e andare alla ricerca di suo padre. Unendosi a una banda, Túrin si mette in viaggio e fra scorribande, assalti a tradimento e avventure di ogni genere, riesce a sfuggire agli uomini di Morgoth che lo inseguono, di regno in regno. Dopo essersi rifugiato presso un altro re, sotto falso nome, Túrin arriva allo scontro finale. Postfazione di Gianfranco de Turris. Con una nota di Quirino Principe.
