In 8° (22×14,5 cm); 12 pp. e una c. di tav. Brossura editoriale. Frontespizio uniformemente brunito (con solo un angolo basso chiaro). Antico timbretto privato al marine basso della brossura che identifica il volume come appartenuto al noto avvocato e naturalista Alfono Magiera. Dedica manoscritta di Giuseppe Mazzetti a Pietro Magiera. Qualche lieve foxing e per il resto in buone condizioni di conservazione. Prima ed unica non comune edizione di questa pubblicazione dedicata ai fossoli rinvenuti nel territorio di Montese, opera del noto sacerdote, studioso e geologo originario di San Martino, frazione di Montese nel modenese (18 agosto 1818 - 21 dicembre 1896) che fu tra i membri più attivi della Società Geologica Italiana. L'autore fu membro anche dell'Accademia pontificia dei Modena e, infine, dell'Accademia di scienze, lettere ed arti della stessa città. Di idee progressiste, nonostante la sua formazione religiosa presso il Seminario cittadino, si espresse a più riprese per l'indipendenza della scienza dalla religione pur senza mai rinnegare l'importanza del pensiero religioso per la formazione degli uomini e rifiutando le posizioni più estremiste del positivismo. I suoi grandi ideali liberali fu amico di numerosi oppositori del duca Francesco V d'Austria-Este e, dal 1855, arrivando a schierarsi, attivamente, in favore della politica italiana di casa Savoia, tanto da prendere parte ad una congiura antiducale e da venir inserito nella lista di proscrizione della capitale estense. In esilio apprese della caduta e fuga del Duca e rientrò in città. Amico di P. Doderlein, D. Pantanelli, G. Cappellini, T. Taramelli e il conte A. Manzoni, fu uno dei maggiori studiosi di ricci di mare fossili (echinidi) e altri gruppi fossili. "Nell'arco di venti anni pubblicò una ventina di articoli a carattere paleontologico e numerosi lavori sulla geologia dell'area di Montese, che ancora oggi mostrano tutta la loro validità e "freschezza" scientifica" (Treccani). Quello qui presentato è proprio uno di questi articoli dedicato ai ritrovamenti fossili nel territorio di Montese. Molto raro ed in buone-ottime condizioni di conservazione. Rif.
