Contemporary full calf with morocco label and gilt-tooled spine boards hinges and extremities rubbed interior bright and virtually unfoxed. A fine and copy of an extraordinarily rare work important in the history of metallurgy and iron mineralogy. ---- Exeedingly rare second edition much rarer than the first edition only one copy listed in Worldcat: Ecole des Mines Paris. In 1775 Pierre Grignon published a book on various aspects of iron mineralogy and metallurgy which is of considerable importance to the history of metallurgy and crystallography. Grignon was occupied in the commerical operation of a blast furnace and forge plant and his science stemmed from observations on a much larger scale than those of his laboratry contemporaries. He had the opportunity to see large crystals in shrinkage heads of large castings. The first memoir of structural interest � M�moire sur les m�tamorphoses du fer � had been read before the French Academy in 1761 but was not published until 1775. Here he provides a model of crystal structure which is qualitatively the same as that used by Rom� de l'Isle in 1772 by Tobern Bergman in 1773 and particularly by the great Ha�y in 1784 and it is not improbable that Grignon's ideas public but unpublished provided the stimulus for the mathematical approach of these more famous crystallographers. Although the possibility of solid solutions as a mixed aggregate is implicit in the ideas of many of the corpuscular philosophers it is Grignon who first describes a crystallographic model of a mixed crystal Smith History of Metallography pp. 132-136. Sharp corners. NO owner's name or bookplate. Pages are fresh crisp and unmarked. NO underlining. NO highlighting. NO margin notes. Oversize Hardcover. 8.75" wide by 11.25" tall by 1.75" thick. Posthumously printed memoirs of Ralph Early Grim 1902-1989 geologist and Research Professor Emeritus Department of Geology University of Illinois Urbana. The February 2009 newsletter of THE CLAY MINERALS SOCIETY photocopy laid-in contains a tribute to Grim from the University of New Mexico's Dewey Moore. In it Moore writes: "The contrast between his rather humble origins and his lofty reputation as a scientist and world traveler was perhaps the stimulant for him to write his memoirs. After his death his wife Frances E. Grim had them transcribed and a few perhaps 6 copies bound. The original copy of MEMOIRS OF RALPH EARLY GRIM is in the University of Illinois Main Library archives; one copy rests in the Clay Minerals Society's archives." Handsomely bound in the original maroon pebble-grain full leather stamped in shiny gold on the spine and front cover. From Dewey Moore's tribute: "In 1951 Grim shifted to the University of Illinois Geology Department. From this base Grim put his mark on the clay minerals profession: guidance at the 1951 meeting in St. Louis that served as the incubation for what was to become The Clay Minerals Society; his 1953 publication of CLAY MINERALOGY; and the publication of his APPLIED CLAY MINERALOGY 1962. From this point on most of us are familiar with Ralph Grim's history. His books proved to be the vehicles that carried clay science into maturity as a discipline. His professional activities led to many accolades from his peers. The ultimate honor for a mineralogist is to be awarded the Roebling Medal by the Mineralogical Society of America. Ralph Grim accepted this award in 1974. For what could be called the corresponding award for consulting the Ivory Coast in western Africa bestowed on Professor Grim in 1973 the title of Chevalier Knight. Ralph Grim earned this highest honor for a non-citizen for developing local professionals to take over the duties of the Ivory Coast Geological Survey during his 15 visits to the country and for discovering a huge iron deposit in the western part of the country."
