‎Ornithology Coues Eliott‎

‎Department of the Interior U.S. Geological Survey of the Territories F. V. Hayden U. S. Geologist-in-Charge Miscellaneous publications-No.3. Birds of the Northwest: A Hand-Book of the Ornithology of the Region Drained by the Missouri River and its Tributaries‎

‎Washington: Government Printing Office 1874. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Blue cloth gilt. Minor darkening to spine. First Edition. 1 vols. 8vo. Ayer credits this work as giving a "thorough treatment of the subject. Extensive synonymies distribution of species specimens dsecured on United States government expeditions field notes on habits and descriptions of new species and genera with occasional analytical keys have made an authoritative and readable book." Elliott Coues 1842-1899 became interested in natural history in particular ornithology when his family moved from New Hampshire to Washington D. C. Coues became aquainted with the Smithsonian Institution and its collections which fed his interests in natural history. As an assistant surgeon in the Army during the Civil War Coues "collected studied and published extensively on birds during his peripatetic military assignments" DSB at various forts in Arizona North Carolina and in the Dakota Territory. Later he served as naturalist for the Northen Boundary Commission 1873-1876 and for the Hayden survey in the ensuing four years. He was professor of anatomy at Columbian College now George Washington University from 1877 to 1886 and was editor of natural history subjects for the "Century Dictionary." He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences among numerous other societies and was a founder of the American Ornithologists' Union an early conservation group. Coues published some very well-received innovative tracts on birds with "Key to North American Birds" and "Check-List of North American Birds." "A distinctive feature of the "Check-List" was Coues's corrections in the orthography and pronunciation of original scientific names . . . He was a leader in the trend of his era toward reducing the great number of species names to varieties especially in local forms" DSB. He was considered a "lucid writer with a charming style second only and successor to Spencer F. Baird his mentor in ornithology Coues presented a great deal of information on the behavior and life histories of birds" DSB. Late in life he checked and annotated manuscripts of various American western exploration most notably the journals of Lewis and Clark and of Zebulon Pike. "In his meticulous fashion he retraced the explorers' routes and enlarged considerably upon their natural history observations" DSB. Ayer p. 143

Government Printing Office hardcover‎

‎ORNITHOLOGY. COLOR PLATE BOOKS. MEŸER HENRY LEONARD‎

‎ILLUSTRATIONS OF BRITISH BIRDS‎

‎London: Longman & Co 1837-44. FIRST EDITION. 372 x 270 mm. 14 5/8 x 10 5/8". Four volumes. FIRST EDITION. VERY FINE CONTEMPORARY EMERALD GREEN MOROCCO GILT covers framed in the Romantic style with multiple plain and decorative gilt rules and foliate rolls in gilt and in blind raised bands spine compartments densely gilt with fleuron centerpieces surrounded by swirling foliage gilt titling gilt-ruled turn-ins pale yellow embossed endpapers leather hinges all edges gilt. WITH 319 HAND-COLORED PLATES: 313 as called for in the contents lists plus one additional plate each of the heron and the blackbird and four of five plates depicting eggs all with original tissue guards. Mullens and Swann pp. 402-03; Wood p. 462 Spines uniformly sunned to a soft olive green a couple of boards with small spots of mild chafing extremities a little rubbed isolated mild foxing but A LOVELY COPY the plates clean fresh and bright with vivid coloring and the handsomely decorated bindings with only trivial wear. Published in 78 parts under the special patronage of King William Queen Adelaide and the Duchess of Kent this is a most desirable issue of one of the most valuable illustrated works on British ornithology. Wood describes it as "the finest and most complete atlas of portraits of British avifauna with their eggs ever published." It is is also a work with an extremely complicated bibliographical history. Ours is the standard first edition which was planned to have 313 plates of birds and five separate egg plates; the latter were discontinued after only five were published. As a result a few early copies contain 318 plates while others have only the 313 bird plates. The present copy has four of the five plates of eggs called for lacking the Woodcock and Guillemot egg plate and has two additional plates illustrating the heron and the blackbird included from the third edition which was being prepared for publication at the same time the issues of the first edition were being released. Many first editions received these bonus plates by mistake. All plates are lettered with both the common and the contemporary scientific name of the bird along with a couple of lines about its size habitat and diet. The illustrations were drawn from nature by Meÿer and his wife--some from living subjects kept by the artist--and were professionally hand colored. Mary Anne Meÿer was an accomplished artist who created many of the original drawings whilst her husband a professional lithographer drew the plates on the stones; this accounts for only his signature appearing on the completed plates. Born in Amsterdam Meÿer d. 1864 came to England in 1806 after Napoleon made his own brother Louis king of Holland. He married Mary Anne Moor in 1830 and they set up house in Surrey where Meÿer pursued his twin passions as an artist and a naturalist. This copy has superb impressions of all the plates the quality of some deteriorated in the later issues and outstanding hand coloring. In terms of convincing and beautiful illustrations the book holds its own with other famous ornithological publications no matter their language; it is not a rare book but a copy like the present one--especially well-preserved with bright beautiful plates and a handsome binding--is quite difficult to find. We are very grateful to Professor W. G. Hale for his assistance with this description and with the complex bibliographical history. Longman & Co unknown‎

‎ORNITHOLOGY WHITE Captain Samuel Albert‎

‎Into the Dead Heart The Cruise of the Avocet Ooldea and In the Far North-East‎

‎Adelaide: W.K. Thomas 1914- 1917. Excellent. Duodecimo four books bound together in contemporary quarter roan with gilt lettering; with a total of 83 photo plates some folding with original printed wrappers bound in. An outstanding collection of Australian ornithology and central desert travel narratives by pioneering conservationist and Aboriginal advocate Samuel Albert White 1870-1954. White is remembered as an intrepid traveller of the central Australia and for his collaboration with Gregory Matthews on the definitive ornithology reference The Birds of Australia. Born in Adelaide White served in South Africa and upon his return participated in several major overland expeditions including a journey to Alice Springs by camel in 1913 and the Musgrave and Everard ranges in 1914. White later accompanied expeditions to Cooper Creek the Nullarbor and the Finke River; he later played a prominent role in the creation of South Australian national parks. As reflected in these books White sought the companionship of the central desert Aborigines and advocated their welfare in the public arena. In particular Into the Dead Heart contains significant ethnological description of the desert tribes including anecdotal descriptions of the author's interactions with individual Aboriginal people. Another work within this bound collection titled On the Flooded Murray River contains a sub-chapter titled "Native Art and Rock Shelters. An old camping ground visited". Here White records an excursion to a Victorian rock art site complete with a large folding plate comprising images of the cave its art and the author's companions Messers. Zeitz and Bellchambers. These four books are originally from the collection of surgeon and South Australian resident Dr. Edward Angas Johnson and have been inscribed to him by Captain White. The front endpaper bears the bookplate of Adelaide city council alderman Charles R. F. Glover an assiduous collector of Australiana and ethnological artefacts. Details of the four titles are as follows: Into the Dead Heart. An Ornithological Trip through Central Australia. 1914 154 pp. 26 full-page photo plates. The Cruise of the Avocet. In Search of Skuas and other Things. 1916 68pp 15 full-page photo plates all ornithological in nature. Ooldea on the East-West Railway On the Flooded Murray River. 1917 88pp. 29 full-page photo plates three folding. In the Far North-East. A Scientific Expedition. 1917 144pp. 13 full-page photo plates. ‎ORNITHOLOGY. COLOR PLATE BOOKS. GOULD JOHN‎

‎MONOGRAPH OF THE PITTIDAE‎

‎London: Published by the Author 1880-1. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. 565 x 390 mm. 22 1/4 x 15 3/8". Part I with text and plates; part II with text only all published. Two parts in one volume. Part II edited by Richard Bowdler Sharpe. FIRST AND ONLY EDITION. Pleasing green three-quarter crushed morocco over green cloth boards raised bands spine compartments with gilt lettering and tools. WITH 10 BEAUTIFUL HAND-COLORED LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES. With original blue upper wrapper to each part bound in. Sitwell "Fine Bird Books" p. 102; Zimmer p. 263. Lower cover with a few negligible scratches and a light stain or two original wrappers with a faint crease down the middle plates with just a touch of toning around the edges but A REALLY EXCELLENT COPY ENTIRELY FRESH AND CLEAN. This brief but very pleasing work was John Gould's final publication before his death in 1881. It was originally conceived as a four-part series but only Part I was completed in its entirety; Part II containing just text was published shortly after Gould's death by his friend and fellow ornithologist R. Bowdler Sharpe who also acted as editor. According to the nota bene on the wrapper for Part I the illustrations found here were "principally taken from the Author's works on 'Birds of Asia' 'Australia' and 'New Guinea.'" As these sources suggest the pittidae a family of small tropical birds are found almost entirely in the aforementioned regions. The males of the species are known to possess a great range of colorful plumage--from the somber Black Ground-Thrush to the jewel-like and aptly named Necklaced Pitta--an attribute played up to great effect in the excellent coloring of the plates. The hand-colored lithographs seen here and in most of Gould's work from the 1830's on were a special point of pride for the scientist. According to DNB "the design and natural arrangement of the birds on the plates was due to the genius of John Gould and a Gould plate has a distinctive beauty and quality." Although he did not create the actual lithographs himself he did create preliminary sketches upon which the plates were ultimately based. He was also intimately involved with the publication process from start to finish including acting as agent and distributor of his own work. As a scientist Gould 1804-81 is perhaps the most recognizable name in ornithology after Audubon. Published by the Author unknown‎

‎MONOGRAPHIE DER RAMPHASTIDEN ODER TUKANARTIGEN VOEGEL. MONOGRAPH OF THE RAMPHASTIDAE OR FAMILY OF TOUCANS‎

‎Nuremberg: Published by the Translators 1841-47. First German Edition. 343 x 255 mm. 13 1/2 x 10". 41 of 42 leaves of text see below. Four fascicles. Translated by Johann Heinrich Christian Friedrich Sturm and Johann Wilhelm Sturm. First German Edition. PUBLISHER'S PRINTED PAPER WRAPPERS that of second issue lacking back wrapper but with two states of the front wrapper that of fourth issue apparently in facsimile. Housed together in a modern brown buckram clamshell box backed with cream-colored linen. 40 LITHOGRAPHIC PLATES including 36 HAND-COLORED PLATES OF TOUCANS two black & white anatomical plates of toucan bills and skeleton and an additional three black & white states of colored plates not called for by the bibliographies consulted. The three additional uncolored plates with pencilled notations and stamp of the Nuremberg Natural History Library on verso. Anker 169; Nissen IVB 379; Zimmer p. 256. Minor stains to paper wrappers occasional mild offsetting other trivial imperfections but A FINE COPY clean fresh and brightly colored. This is a very appealing copy of the German version of Gould's work on Toucans with beautifully colored plates and with the unusual opportunity to appreciate the degree to which hand coloring enhances the reader's experience. Our copy has three additional plates in black & white like the plates in the online BSB copy allowing one to contrast the difference between colored and uncolored plates and the extent to which the artful hand coloring brings the exotic birds to life. Zimmer notes that "the principal part of the general text is based on Gould's 'Monograph of the Ramphastidae' 1833-35 of which it is in places a literal translation; but considerable sic of the matter is rewritten or revised and there are additional species described here for the first time. The plates are sometimes redrawn and reduced from Gould but often altered or designed afresh while the illustrations of the new species are entirely new." Added to the Gould text is a translation of Richard Owen's article on toucan anatomy with additional comments by Rudolph Wagner accompanied by two plates of toucan skeletons and bills. The German edition is scarcer than the English version with ABPC and RBH finding five copies at auction since at least 1975 as opposed to more than 70 copies of the English edition. Because this work was issued in parts over several years collations vary. While Zimmer calls for 42 leaves he also reports that the Ayer Library copy included the prospectus not present here; perhaps that was included in his count. Published by the Translators unknown‎

‎Ornithology Coues Eliott‎

‎A List of the Birds of New England. Reprinted from the Proceedings Essex Institute Vol. V.‎

‎Salem Mass: Essex Institute Press 1868. First Separate Appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. Original printed tan paper wrappers. Wear to spine and extremities of wrapper lower cover detached but present. First Separate Appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. This work appeared in the Communications of the Essex Institute in May 1868 titled "Catalogue of the Birds of North America contained in the Museum." Coues stated that "the reprint gives the faunal list precedence over the museum catalouge but this is true only as regards the title-the general text is unaltered" Ayer. According to Coues there were only 50 copies of this reprint.

Elliott Coues 1842-1899 became interested in natural history in particular ornithology when his family moved from New Hampshire to Washington D. "In his meticulous fashion he retraced the explorers' routes and enlarged considerably upon their natural history observa. Ayer p. 142 Essex Institute Press unknown books‎
