In Roma, appresso M. Angelo de Rossi, 1684, in-4, pergamena coeva, cc. (5), 77, (6). Con frontespizio inciso e 66 splendide incisioni in rame all'acquaforte. Copia con due carte (T2 e T3) provenienti da altro esemplare e rimarginate e 2 carte (F2 e F3) provenienti da un esemplare della prima edizione (Roma, A. Fei, 1622) e rimarginate; 2 tavole con strappo riparato (senza alcuna perdita), una rimarginata, 2 margini esterni lievemente restaurati, ma copia ad ampi margini (misure cm. 27.2x20.5), pulita e fresca come si trova raramente. (Ceresoli pag. 385: “Quest'opera, testo di lingua, è divenuta rara nel corso dei secoli ed è ancora più difficile a trovarsi in buone condizioni, essendo quasi sempre deturpata da tracce d'uso”).

1 volume in-4°, mm 240x175, pp. (12), 81, (12), con 66 tavole a piena pagina incise a bulino da Tempesta, Villamena e Maggi. Elegante legatura settecentesca in mezzo marocchino rosso con titolo e fregi in oro al dorso, piatti inquadrati da cornice geometrica dorata, ben conservata e solida. Esemplare complessivamente in buono stato e abbastanza marginoso; qualche macchia e arrossature sparse, più marcate al frontespizio e alle pagine: 6, 7, 8, 40, 41, 42, 45, 46, 47, 48. Uno strappo riparato a pagina 15 e uno a pagina 18; una mancanza al margine bianco di pagina 57. Edizione originale, piuttosto rara, del più celebre trattato ornitologico italiano. "Non deve destare meraviglia la grande fama che l'Uccelliera ebbe in ogni tempo, se si ricorda che fu considerata e si considera tutt'ora il capolavoro dell'arte tipografica e figurativa del secolo XVII" (Ceresoli, p. 384, 385). Francis Willughby sometimes spelt Willoughby 1635 �1672 was an English ornithologist and ichthyologist and an early student of linguistics and games. He was born and raised at Middleton Hall Warwickshire the only son of an affluent country family. He was a student at Trinity College Cambridge where he was tutored by the mathematician and naturalist John Ray who became a lifetime friend and colleague and lived with Willughby after 1662 when he lost his livelihood through his refusal to sign the Act of Uniformity. Willughby was elected as a Fellow of the Royal Society in 1661 then aged 27. He died of pleurisy in July 1672 aged 36. Willughby Society unknown

First Separate Appearance. 1 vols. 8vo. This work appeared in the Communications of the Essex Institute in May 1868 titled "Catalogue of the Birds of North America contained in the Museum." Coues stated that "the reprint gives the faunal list precedence over the museum catalouge but this is true only as regards the title-the general text is unaltered" Ayer. According to Coues there were only 50 copies of this reprint. Elliott Coues 1842-1899 became interested in natural history in particular ornithology when his family moved from New Hampshire to Washington D. C. Coues became aquainted with the Smithsonian Institution and its collections which fed his interests in natural history. As an assistant surgeon in the Army during the Civil War Coues "collected studied and published extensively on birds during his peripatetic military assignments" DSB at various forts in Arizona North Carolina and in the Dakota Territory. Later he served as naturalist for the Northen Boundary Commission 1873-1876 and for the Hayden survey in the ensuing four years. He was professor of anatomy at Columbian College now George Washington University from 1877 to 1886 and was editor of natural history subjects for the "Century Dictionary." He was elected to the National Academy of Sciences among numerous other societies and was a founder of the American Ornithologists' Union an early conservation group. Coues published some very well-received innovative tracts on birds with "Key to North American Birds" and "Check-List of North American Birds." "A distinctive feature of the "Check-List" was Coues's corrections in the orthography and pronunciation of original scientific names . . . He was a leader in the trend of his era toward reducing the great number of species names to varieties especially in local forms" DSB. He was considered a "lucid writer with a charming style second only and successor to Spencer F. Baird his mentor in ornithology Coues presented a great deal of information on the behavior and life histories of birds" DSB. Late in life he checked and annotated manuscripts of various American western exploration most notably the journals of Lewis and Clark and of Zebulon Pike. Title page and a few other leaves with small embossed stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum in Cyrillic; volume I with the bookplate of Herbert McLean Evans on pastedown; some evidence of removed bookplates or labels in a few volumes. Edges and corners a bit rubbed spines slightly sunned some faint scratches and a few minor stains on the boards but THE ORIGINAL UNRESTORED BINDINGS REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED AND ALTOGETHER ATTRACTIVE. Some minor offsetting from the plates a touch of soiling to title page of volume I and plates 23 and 24 in volume III about half the pages in volume VI noticeably foxed and toned as in all copies we could trace because of different paper stock used but the other volumes IN UNUSUALLY FINE BRIGHT CLEAN CONDITION INTERNALLY AND ALL OF THE PLATES even those in the sixth volume CLEAN SMOOTH AND PLEASING. This is an unusually attractive contemporary copy of a foundational work in the study of birds the first scientific work with color plates published in America and the inspiration for Audubon's epoch-making work on the subject. Although a few books on American ornithology were published in Europe prior to the present work this set was far superior both in artistry and in the quality of the scientific information it contained. It was also enormously influential to generations of ornithologists that came after Wilson. Serendipitously as DNB tells us Wilson 1766-1813 actually met Audubon on a trip in 1810 during which the author gathered sketches of new birds and advertised the volumes he had already published. Although Audubon lacked the funds to purchase a set "seeing what Wilson was achieving inspired him to publish his own illustrations after Wilson's death." We may hardly wonder at the young Audubon's amazement; according to Bennett this was "the first truly outstanding American color plate book of any type" and is "absolutely basic as a collectors' item while being somewhat unjustly overshadowed by the enormous and more beautiful Audubon giant folios actually printed in Great Britain." Volumes I-VII were all published during the author's lifetime while Volumes VIII-IX were issued after his death by his friend and editor George Ord who wrote the text for the final volume though using Wilson's original plates. Ord 1781-1866 later reissued Volumes VII-VIII in 1824 with revised nomenclature and other changes to the text. Our copy contains these two reissued volumes along with the first editions of the others. Apparently this make-up is not uncommon--Zimmer notes the same composition in the Newberry's copy. Our set has a distinguished provenance containing the stamp of the Pavlovsk Museum once a great palace constructed by Catherine the Great for her eldest son. The more recent bookplate belongs to the noted embryologist Herbert McLean Evans 1882-1971 whose vast collection of books related to science and medicine went mainly to the Harry Ransom Center. This work is almost always found with significant browning and foxing; in our set only Volume VI contains such condition issues as is virtually always the case while the remaining volumes are remarkably well preserved.
