Tales from Shakespeare is a collection of fourteen of Shakespeare's comedies and six of his tragedies retold in prose format with the intention of simplifying the stories to be understood by children. Like his first book of essays this collection was commended for its conversational familiar tone and helped to solidify Lamb's place in literature. This volume also contains Mrs. Leicester's School a collection of short pieces in autobiographical style from the point of view of young girls telling stories about their daily lives. Rare presentation copy of the 1797 second edition much revised by Coleridge and greatly expanded with new poems by both authors. Small octavo modern quarter red morocco raised bands marbled boards and end-papers top edge gilt. Early presentation note from Charles Lamb bound in before the title page: "To my dear friend William Hone Charles Lamb Oct. 1811." <br/><br/>Hone was a literary man and something of an early entrepreneur. One venture that ultimately ended in failure was his stint as an antiquarian bookseller. His friendship with Charles Lamb is well-documented.<br/><br/>The first edition and Coleridge's first book of poems published the previous year contained Lamb's first published verses. The second edition was published after Coleridge extensively revised his contribution and added a new Preface. Lamb added an additional 10 poems to the second edition including "Childhood" in addition to the four that were published in the first edition. <br/><br/>Two bookplates on the front paste-down front end-paper cracking. Inscription a bit faded but easily legible. A lovely copy with an excellent association. This copy previously sold by Bauman Rare Books. Printed by N. Biggs, for J. Cottle, Bristol, and Messrs. Laid in is an autograph letter signed from the poet Bernard Barton to Yorke sic Clarke Esq. in the form of a punning poem based upon the motto on a wafer sent him which reads - "I trouble you with a line." The poem is one full page long and is dated 9/5/1840. Barton was a Quaker poet and a friend of Southey as well as one of Lamb's intimate circle of friends. A nice association. These eloquently written pieces mingle humor and pathos as they describe the experiences of the author and his acquaintances while attending boarding school playing whist listening to music visiting Quaker meetings etc. Food is a recurring topic "A Dissertation upon Roast Pig"; there are two essays on Valentine's Day one in each volume and several on plays and actors.<br>Â Â Â Â The first series made its first appearance in book form in London 1823.
