Paternoster-Row London : H D Symonds 1807 A complete set of the Barr edition of Buffon's Natural History in 10 volumes with 87 plates 81 of which are hand coloured. Buffon's Histoire Naturelle begun in 1749 was read extensively and had a huge influence on later thinking. This edition translated by James Smith Barr is now rare - although at the time it went through a number of printings. It is illustrated with a number of fine engravings produced for Barr and it is now rare to find these hand coloured rather than plain. Each plate has 2 engravings each showing an animal in its 'natural' surroundings including domestic dog breeds. In full leather binding with fairly recent spines with title labels and gilt compartments and contemporary boards in tree calf. The bindings are in good condition with some wear to board edges and sometimes a little scuffing to the boards. The original endpapers have been retained and repaired. Small ink signature of John Verinder to preliminary page in each volume. The contents are in good condition with slight offsetting/browning around the plates. Some of these are tissue-guarded but these are small guards and not fixed; some of them are crumpled and grubby. There is occasional browning to text pages and some page corners have been turned over just at the edge. Vol I 1797 333 pages frontispiece portrait of Buffon. Vol II 1797 small brown mark affecting pages 43-47 348 pp. Vol III 1807 4 tinted plates as called for occasional browning where bus tickets used as page markers 348 pp. Vol IV 1807 1 tinted plate as called for 352 pp. Vol V 1807 16 hand coloured plates although listing calls for 13 347 pp. Vol VI 1807 19 hand coloured plates as called for 346 pp. Vol VII 1807 13 hand coloured plates as called for title page repaired 338 pp. Vol VIII 1807 18 hand coloured plates as called for 343 pp. Vol IX 1807 15 hand coloured plates as called for repair to title page reverse of contents page and final leaf. EDINBURGH: Sylvester Doig at the Royal Exchange A rare english translation of this work first published in France in 1778. There is no date on the title page but there is an inscription dated 1793. With 2 title pages an advertisement contents listing and instructions to the binder and text with 24 copper engraved plates. There is a section on each bird and a plate usually illustrating male and female forms bound with it. Bound in full leather with a gilt crest on the front board. The binding requires repair with wear at joints corners and edges - the front board is becoming detached. There is a small signature on the front paste-down endpaper which is not very clear - but may be a Mr Hay. Whoever this was he has added notes in ink to the preliminaries and sometimes to the backs of plates. These contain detailed descriptions of the favourite foods of many of the birds - for example skylarks a penchant for spiders - 'good for them particularly if they are not well'. The two title pages are detached but the remainder of the book is sound and complete. There is a little browning and spotting - but apart from the ink annotations - the book is very clean. London : T Cadell and W Davies; R C and J Rivington; et al 1812 A very good set of this 20 volume edition with black and white frontispiece 2 folding maps and 681 hand coloured plates. With an account of Buffon's life by William Wood. It is rare to find this set with hand colouring. In contemporary full speckled calf bindings that have been rebacked to provide new spines with gilt-lined raised bands and title and volume labels. The original boards have scuffing and pitting and there is light wear at edges and corners but the bindings are in very good clean condition. Endpapers are marbled and some of the front pastedowns have a scuffed area indicating the removal of bookplates. 2 of the volumes have the armorial bookplate of the Right Hon. Sir Robert Peel Bart who was Prime Minister 1834-5. and 1841-6 and is viewed as the founder of the modern British police force. The contents are in very good condition with occasional light spotting generally at the top margin and offsetting from the plates. The occasional plate and text page is toned. All the volumes have 2 initial and final blanks a half title and title contents listings and directions to the binder. All have the original page marker torn in one volume. In this set Vol VI has 2 plates numbered 152 and 2 numbered 158 with different animals; Vol VII lacks one plate 211 and Vol VIII lacks plate 252 but has 2 numbered 254 different animals. Covers and spines are a little marked worn or scratched. Some bumping and wear to corners and spine ends. All covers are firmly attached but some cracks on some cover joints. Binding in all volumes is sound apart from the frontis title page and dedication pages in Volume 1 and the contents pages of Volume 5 which are only very loosely attached. All plates are present. Pages and plates are clean. Plate XLVIII is detached and the page is damaged at the edges. Previous owners bookplate on inside front cover of all volumes W. E. Powell. Seven volumes contain original attached green silk page marking ribbons. Approx. shipped weight 7kg.
