‎The rare first Japanese translation of W. P. Lyon's anti-evolutionary text ' Homo versus Darwin'. It constitutes the very first publication in Japanese to reject Darwin's theory. A year after the publication, the book was banned for 'corrupting public morals'.The present work is Lyon's reply to the publication of Darwin's The Descent of Man. Here, he sees Darwin being charged by Homo of denying him from being a creature made by a God and declaring man to be merely some kind of animal. The author is recorded as being 'Eisa Gurei' [Asa Gray], but in 1986 a study confirmed the text to be a translation of Lyon's work.'Saru no Saiban' is an important work in the history of the reception of Darwinism in Japan. Darwin's theories had a profound influence on Japan and Japanese culture but in a slightly different way than in the West: Darwinism was marked as social and political principles primarily embraced by social thinkers, philosophers and politicians to advocate the superiority of Japanese culture and society (and military) and not by biologists and zoologists. ""It was as if Darwin's famous oceanic journey and the meticulous research into the animal and plant kingdoms that he spent his life undertaking had all been staged as an elaborate excuse for composing a theory whose true object was Victorian society and the fate of the world's modern nations."" (Golley, Darwinism in Japan: The Birth of Ecology).‎

‎Edition - complète en un volume - à l'adresse de Bâle. postérieure d'un an à l'originale. ''Merveilleux récit en forme d'essai romanesque que Benoît de Maillet passa sa vie à composer pour tenter de prouver ce qui était à l'époque une hérésie, à savoir que toute vie provenait de la mer''. (in Versins). Important ouvrage qui ne sera pas sans influencer les naturalistes des Lumières. L'auteur y expose une “théorie de la terre” transformiste qui préfigure les idées de Lamarck et Darwin. ''On trouve ici l'opinion que la terre a été toute couverte d'eau, opinion adoptée plus tard par M. de Buffon, qui l'a fortifiée de preuves nouvelles ; mais ce n'est et ce ne sera longtemps qu'une opinion... Il est même certain qu'il existe de grands espaces où l'on ne trouve aucun vestige du séjour des eaux ; d'autres où l'on n'aperçoit que des dépôts laissés par les eaux terrestres. (Voltaire, Catalogue de la plupart des écrivains français qui ont paru dans le Siècle de Louis XIV, pour servir à l'histoire littéraire de ce temps, 1751). Comme témoin des perspectives ouvertes par le système cartésien, il existe un livre singulier et génial : Telliamed, publié en 1748, dix ans après la mort de son auteur, mais conçu dès 1716. C'est l'oeuvre d'un vieux songeur, (il la termine à 82 ans), un curieux homme, Benoît de Maillet, diplomate en Egypte, instruit des choses de l'Orient. Il n'est point astronome ni physicien ; c'est avant tout un géologue, un neptunien, désireux de prouver l'origine océanique des roches, et de toute vie terrestre. Mais il possède ce don rare : l'imagination cosmique. (. . . ) Et son livre est passionnant : c'est un roman de l'Univers (H. Tuzet, Le Cosmos et l'Imagination).
