Dark brown endpapers front hinge cracked but secure a few spots to the first couple of pages plus a previous owners inscription in ink to the reverse of the free endpaper clear pages some light creasing rough cut page edges three cut untidily causing loss to the margin not affecting the text otherwise neat. First published on the 6th November 1880 and quickly selling out its first 1500 copies this second thousand was published within two months of the first.Authored with the assistance of Darwin's son botanist Francis Darwin the work concerns itself with how plants respond to external stimuli examining these processes in individual plants to gain understanding of general principles governing their growth and life. Featuring numerous vignette illustrations throughout.With a single page of publisher's advertisements to the verso of the half title and a thirty-two page publisher's catalogue dated January 1879 to the rear.From the library of prominent English botanist television presenter author and environmental campaigner David Bellamy.Remarked upon by Francis Darwin as a work that was 'widely reviewed and excited much interest among the general public' this is a lovely copy of a very scarce later work from Charles Darwin. In the publisher's original cloth binding. Externally bright some bumping and with light marks to front board. Front hinge strained a bit but with board holding firm. Internally firmly bound.
