Importantes recherches de Haller sur la formation des os. Le premier des deux mémoires dont se compose l'ouvrage, contient les expériences réalisées par M. Detlef, protecteur et élève de Haller, en partie sous ses propres yeux. Le second, expose les expériences de Haller lui-même sur des poulets à différents stades de leur développement, et ses réflexions et hypothèses sur la physiologie de ce phénomène. Dans une note au bas de la page 240, Haller fait allusion à une "Table" contenant ses observations sur les accroissements des os, qui "étant trop grande pour le volume de ce mémoire a été imprimée à part". Cette "Table" qui manque souvent figure bien dans le présent exemplaire. Quelques rousseurs. Papier bruni. Bel exemplaire.

A wide-margined copy clean and fine printed on good paper. � First French edition - "Vegetable Staticks" 1727 - of this milestone work in plant physiology being the first complete account of the physiology of plants including the reaction with air and the movement of the sap. Hale's also here introduced a new method of gas collection and the work greatly influenced the subsequent develpment in chemistry and contributed to the discovery of many of the most impirtent medical gases. This importent French translation by Buffon which has the famous "Pr�face du traductcur" in which Buffon praises the experimental method and includes Hales�s appendix of 1733 was very influential.<br><br>"Hale's many experiments with gases led him to demonstrate the dependence of plants on air that plants inspire and give off "air". He measured the volume of waterabsorbed and evaporated in plants and studied the movements of the sap in plants. By weighing a grown potted plant and also the loss in soil in which it grew hales proved that something material was absorbed by the plant from the air. Hall was most famous for his paper on The Reflex function of the medulla oblongata and medulla spinalis published for the Royal Society in 1833 which "established the difference between volitional action and unconscious reflexes." Volume in 8°, legato in pergamena, titolo manoscritto al dorso, bianca, frontespizio con marca tipografica incisa raffigurante l'aurora che reca fiori, prefazioni, VIII, 359 pp., indice, bianca. Prima edizione italiana (1754) dell'opera pubblicata a Gottingae nel 1747. A. Haller (Berna 1708-1777) fu medico, chirurgo, archiatra reale, anatomista e più che fecondo scrittore lasciando larga messe di titoli in ogni campo della sua professione. Importante e bella edizione ad ampi margini, presenta lievi fioriture alle prime e ultime pagine, e mende e mancanze alla legatura coeva (due centimetri al bordo inferiore del dorso). Volume comunque in più che buono stato. Assai poco comune.

Sempre in oro al dorso sono presenti fregi ornamentali. Frego xilografico al frontespizio. Testatine, finalini e iniziali xilografici. Qualche piccola e leggerissima macchiolina di foxing dovuta alla qualità della carta e nel complesso, buono-ottimo esemplare. Bell'edizione veneziana non comune (5 soli esemplari censiti in ICCU) di questa classica opera del grande medico e poeta svizzero, nato a Berna nel 1708, Albrecht von Haller. Fra i temi trattati in quest'opera: Arteria Venae; Cor; Sanguinis; Nutirtio; Respiratio; Cerebrum; Motus Musculorum; Tactus; Gustus; Olfactus; Maducatio Saliva; Pancreas; Renes; Uterus Virgineus; Uterus Fecundus; Vescica Urina; ecc. L'autore studiò medicina a Tubingia e dal 1725 a Leida laureandosi nel 1727. Nel 1728 insieme con Johannes Gessner, viaggia attraverso i paesi alpini, acquisendo un'esperienza importante tanto per i suoi interessi botanici che letterari. L'anno dopo, a Basilea, segue i corsi di matematica tenuti da Johann Bernoulli; medico a Berna dal 1729, nel 1735 istituì un theatrum anatomicum per il perfezionamento professionale dei medici. Dal 1736 al 1753 insegnò anatomia, botanica e chirurgia a Gottinga, fondandovi l'istituto di anatomia, il giardino botanico e, nel 1751, la Reale Società delle scienze di cui fu presidente. Nelle Icones anatomicae descrisse per primo (1743 - 1756) la circolazione arteriosa nel corpo umano e pubblicò i suoi Primi lineamenti di fisiologia nel 1747; studiò le proprietà del sistema nervoso e muscolare nel De partibus corporis humani sensilibus et irritabilibus, del 1752, respingendo le interpretazioni materialistiche di Julien Offray de La Mettrie; studiò anche lo sviluppo degli embrioni; nel 1766 pubblicò gli Elementa physiologiae corporis humani. Haller è considerato uno dei più grandi medici del suo tempo. Good copy.
