IV 492 ff.), 'Begründer der neueren Physiologie' (Rothschuh), war anfangs Assistent Claude Bernard's, 1853-64 Prof. der Physiologie und medizinischen Chemie in Kiel. 1863 wurde er nach Kopenhagen berufen, forderte und erhielt nach Überwindung zahlreicher Hindernisse ein zweckmäßiges physiologisches Laboratorium. 'Die Aera der neuen naturwissenschaftlichen Physiologie wurde damit an der Kopenhagener Universität inaugurirt.' (Hirsch/H.).‎
