Provensal de St Hilaire fut un botaniste et un explorateur français (1779-1853). De 1816 à 1822 puis en 1830,il explora l’Amérique du Sud (brésil, Argentine, Paraguay, Uruguay) où il étudiera des milliers d’animaux, insectes, plantes (7608 ! : son herbier est conservé au Muséum National d’Histoire Naturelle). A son retour, il obtint une chaire à la Faculté des sciences de Paris puis en 1830 devint membre de l’Académie Royale des sciences en remplacement de Lamarck, , avant d’en devenir le président cinq ans plus tard.
