Stuart's Confederate cavalry, was riding north to get around the Union army. It met and attacked a Federal cavalry regiment, driving it through the streets of Hanover. Brig. Gen. Elon Farnsworth's brigade arrived and counterattacked, routing the Confederate vanguard and nearly capturing Stuart himself. Stuart soon counterattacked. Reinforced by Brig. Gen. George A. Custer's Michigan Brigade, Farnsworth held his ground, and a stalemate ensued. Stuart was forced to continue north and east to get around the Union cavalry, further delaying his attempt to rejoin Robert E. Lee's army, which was then concentrating west of Gettysburg. 8vo., First Edition, with a portrait frontispiece and front endpaper maps, endpapers lightly spotted; black cloth, backstrip lettered in silver, a good, firm copy in the dustwrapper, the latter mildly frayed and creased at edges. One of the earliest escape narratives. The author was captured near Tobruk whilst commanding 5th New Zealand Infantry Brigade and placed in Campo 12 near Florence. During his captivity he shared quarters with VC holders Neame and Carton de Wiart whose exploits he recorded in detail. Hargest was one of the highest ranking Allied escapers on WWII. br. "Vi è in molti fisici una specie di fede nell'esattezza dei nuovi principi, piuttosto che un chiaro intendimento di essi". Invece un "chiaro intendimento" si prefigge innanzi tutto questo libro di uno scienziato non ancora trentenne, che aveva già contribuito a rivoluzionare la fisica del Novecento. Pubblicati nel 1930, "I principi fisici della teoria dei quanti" rielaborano le lezioni tenute da Werner Heisenberg all'Università di Chicago nella primavera dell'anno precedente. Di quell'esposizione didattica conservano la perfetta chiarezza nel divulgare i fondamenti della meccanica quantistica, ma si segnalano anche per la classicità di uno stile concettuale e morale che la prorompenza autoaffermativa di molti uomini di scienza ha in seguito obliterato: pur mettendo all'opera tutta la forza conoscitiva dell'importantissimo principio di indeterminazione (1927) a cui Heisenberg ha legato il suo nome - principio secondo il quale è impossibile determinare simultaneamente con precisione assoluta i valori di due grandezze fisiche coniugate, come posizione e velocità di una particella -, egli qui fa spazio, e rende merito, al suo maestro danese Niels Bohr. Ed è infatti un po' dello "spirito di Copenhagen" che si continua a respirare in questo capolavoro della saggistica scientifica. Lo spirito ineguagliabile che negli anni venti del Novecento, affinando il formalismo matematico della teoria quantistica, "ha indirizzato l'intero sviluppo della nuova fisica atomica".
