Soustelle is best known for his studies of the Nahua people but his writing is also insightful and humorous. His book is divided into four parts: First Soustelle describes his early experiences in Mexico and his fascination with the country and its people. Second he describes his work as an ethnologist including his studies of the Nahua people the Mayans and the Tarahumara Indians. Third he reflects on his experiences living in Mexico and his observations of the country's transformation over the years. Finally he offers his thoughts on the state of anthropology and the role of ethnography in the social sciences.
