An entirely uncut, wide-margined copy, printed on handmade paper; a little dog-eared, worm trace to inner blank margin of 3 consecutive leaves with no loss. Overall an excellent interior in fine condition (contemporary signature to title, small stamp to verso). A very desirable copy. ~ First edition, uncommon in the original, unsophisticated state, and entirely uncut. Gabriel Senac de Meilhan (1736-1803), a French writer. In 1790 he published "Des Principes et des causes de la Révolution en France". His "Considérations" was republished in 1789. Kress B.1336. Goldsmith 13327. Cf. Palgrave 1894-1901. Kress states work to be published first in 1755, for which statement no evidence could be found, nor does Kress have this 1755 edition, nor does Goldsmiths or any of the other reference works and also Conlon gives 1765 as date of first publication.Interesting work which discusses the trade and commerce of France, internal and external, the commercial fleet, and the particular circumstances favouring trade and commerce of France. 'Cet ouvrage comporte quatre parties: Du commerce en général; Des avantages qui reviendront à la France par l'établissement d'un solide commerce; De la facilité des établissements de commerce et marine dans la France; Des obstacles qui peuvent s'opposer à un solide établissement de commerce dans la France. ‎<p>Washington D.C. Hamilton Printer 1852. 1852. Very good. - Octavo 8-7/8 inches high by 5-1/2 inches wide. Softcover bound in printed buff white wraps titled in black on the front cover. The covers are lightly creased. 19 pages. The top edge of the pages are creased and there is a spot of foxing to the top corner of the first page. Very good.</p><p>The report to Congress made by Mr. Cartter Chairman of the Committee on Patents.</p><p>A house carpenter from Hudson New York William Woodworth 1780-1839 manufactured machines in particular the Woodworth Planing Machine which he designed and built in 1828. His invention was regarded as the greatest improvement to the planing machine to date allowing one to perform what had then required 25 laborers to do. Having little funds to take advantage of his patent he sold all but a portion of the rights to a syndicate consisting of Samuel Schenck John Gibson and Samuel Pitts who bought out his partner James Strong in the process. After making minor improvements to the machine Woodworth applied for and was granted a new patent in 1836. After his death in 1839 the patent passed on to his son William W. Woodworth with Jason G. Wilson and Edward Bloomer and they went on to request an extension to the patent in 1842 and again in 1845. Although the patent office initially rejected this last extension the patent owners bribed members of Congress and the patent was not only renewed but now expanded to include the Uri Emmons' patent which had expired in 1829. Tired of paying such a large royalty lumber merchants and carpenters started one of the earliest community organizing campaigns in the country in opposition to the extension of the patent which they considered as granting a monopoly to the patent holders. A firestorm of protest ensued when William W. Woodworth sought yet another extension in 1850 and an article in a 1852 issue of Scientific American proclaimed that the "public are now paying fifteen millions of dollars a year for work done by the Woodworth machines" arguing that other machines could do the same for only 3 million. Dates on the sample labels indicate that the class ran between November of 1937 and January of 1938. Original blue stiff paper folder somewhat toned and creased. . 9 x 13 in. With twenty-four fabric samples of sewing embroidery and weaving. Each sample with a manuscript paper label. Leaves bound together with purple ribbon. Some toning and foxing to fabric samples. Very good. The sewing samples include buttonholes button loops on sleeves cuffs pleating and an embroidered handkerchief and the three weaving samples are blue thread woven through mesh.</p>‎

The samples are expertly executed and neatly organized and the typewritten instructions are thoroughly annotated. Some of the annotations reference machine settings while others identify ideal colors of thread and note the prices of various pieces of equipment for Elna machines "Eyelet plate: $2.45". Original light blue three-hole binder. . 9 in x 11 in. With 150 mounted stitchery samples in over a dozen colors of thread on cloth including many examples of elaborate machine embroidery. With accompanying typewritten instructions on how to use an Elna sewing machine. Each sample labeled in manuscript with the machine settings necessary to achieve the stitch. Creasing and some toning to binder. Quite clean throughout despite some toning in places. Manuscript annotations throughout. Color-printed Elna sewing machine catalogue laid in at back. An envelope taped to the inside cover of the binder contains sales receipts for two Elna sewing machines 1973 and 1980 purchased by Helen Poore at a shop in Santa Ana California. An expert example of a machine sewing workbook. A unique item. Very good. The quality of the work in the present item indicates that the creator Helen Poore may have been training for a career as a seamstress or designer or was already a professional learning to use an unfamiliar machine.‎

A household management manual that gives advice on the inner workings of the English middle- and upper middle-class home—everything from preparing tea to preventing mold growth. The manual is organized in chapters according to parts of the household: Residences Principal Apartments Auxiliary Apartments Domestic Offices External Conveniences i.e. gardens and Servants' Hall plus chapters of general advice and the lengthy section on budgeting in annual income brackets from £55 to £5000. The budgeting section lists full estimates of expenses for each of these income brackets: the lower income brackets list just simple purchases like food clothing and candles while the highest includes the salaries of twenty-two servants.</p> Printed for Henry Colburn and Co., hardcover‎

Similar works had been published previously, but this was the most extensive work published at the time. It was reprinted several times.‎

This is a promotional piece put out by the Atlantic City Real Estate Board. It starts off with a health report highlighting the virtues of Atlantic City including information on its hospital the temperatures one can expect and the benefits of bathing in its waters. However most of the 64 pages are dedicated to presenting real estate values in Atlantic City. The brochure shows changes in property values from the early part of the last century to about 1925. A collection of attributed recipes written in narrative format assembled to raise funds for a club house. Includes household tips and a section on Lemon Remedies. Local advertisements precede follow and are interspersed throughout the recipes. Organized in 1898 San Francisco's Corona Club was a women's charitable and civic organization. At the time of this publication the club's numbers were limited to two hundred women but the limitation was later lifted. Sections including Social Services Book Review Child Welfare Dramatic and Household Economics carried out a wide variety of activities providing funds and support "to make this great city a better place in which to live". In rubbed and slightly bumped white oilcloth with blue titles printed to cover. Some light foxing and edgewear throughout otherwise very good. Manuscript recipes throughout twenty-seven written on blanks and in margins one laid in one tipped-in and one clipping laid in. And with the ownership inscription of "Lilian F. This translation wrongly attributes the work to Johan de Witt. The work had been circulated in manuscript and was published, without de la Court's permission, by de Witt "without doubt one of the greatest, if not the greatest statesman of his age"- Palgrave. Measuring 180 x 111mm and collating complete including frontis folding game board and concluding woodcut: 2 62 2. From the collection of stage magician Ricky Jay with his bookplate to upper pastedown. Top margin trimmed close with consistent loss to running headers and occasional loss to page numbers with no other text effected. Pages somewhat toned with minor marginal chips but otherwise unmarked. A scarce satire playing both on the rising popularity of get-rich-quick schemes and on the economics of the marriage market the present is the only example to appear in the auction record. OCLC locates only twelve institutional copies. The proposed lottery filled with abstruse rules and convoluted promises ensures that the cycle continues.<br /> <br /> A Scheme also mocks marriage as a scam in which women could either make a wise match in a rich man or lose it all by marrying down. The lottery provides "Fifty Thousand tickets to be deliver'd to Maids or Widows or any that appear to be such" in the hopes of winning a financially stable husband represented by the tickets drawn. Such a match could be a good one: "A Ware-House Keeper with the Salary of a Hundred Pounds" or "the Governour." It could also by virtue of lottery be a loss: "2 Scotchmen both Pedlars 500 Broken Booksellers" and a range of other ruinous bounders are also listed as prizes. For those who desire an advance attempt the folding game bound in the book invites blindfolded women to stick a pin in the board to claim their prize.
