‎br. Il primo scritto simmeliano sul denaro (Zur Psychologie des Geldes) risale al 1889 e precede di undici anni la prima edizione della "Filosofia del denaro" (1900). La riflessione sul denaro occupa quindi un tratto consistente del percorso intellettuale di Georg Simmel, un decennio cruciale nell'evoluzione del suo pensiero sociologico e filosofico. Accolta fin dall'inizio come un'opera stimolante e controversa, è fin troppo facile additare in Simmel il filosofo della crisi e individuare in quest'aspetto le ragioni dell'affinità tra il suo tempo, e il suo modo di esserne interprete, e la fase attuale. Non sono, o non sono soltanto, le tentazioni irrazionalistiche e vitalistiche che emergono dalla crisi a costituire il fascino attuale di Simmel, quanto la sua visione della crisi come possibilità permanente, mai definitivamente superabile, il rifiuto di schemi chiusi e «compatti» di pensiero che pretendano di fornire soluzioni e che non siano semplicemente costruzioni provvisorie, punti di orientamento in un processo senza fine di interpretazione.‎

Se in Roma l'analisi ruota attorno alla bellezza della città eterna in virtù dell'unione di una moltitudine di elementi in grado di dar vita a un'armonia perfetta, in Firenze l'autore individua i temi della fusione di natura e spirito che la città del Rinascimento sembra riuscire a preservare e a perpetuare, assurgendo a modello resistente a qualsiasi modernità. In Venezia, infine, l'autore si concentra sul tema dell'assenza di verità, ossia di una realtà esteriore che non riesce a esprimere la propria natura interiore, e che quindi pregiudica l'armonia tra le parti, dando luogo alla tragedia della modernità. In queste dense e nitide pagine, ricche di intuizioni profonde, Simmel, quasi fosse un pittore impressionista, ritrae la bellezza di Roma, Firenze e Venezia, restituendone con precise pennellate tutta l'armonia e l'inafferrabile mistero.‎

Pubblicato nel 1908, "Sociologia" costituisce la maggiore realizzazione della vocazione intermittente per la sociologia che caratterizza il complesso e multiforme percorso intellettuale di Georg Simmel. Nel volume, il talento simmeliano per l'individuazione di nuovi oggetti analitici e la cifra saggistica della sua scrittura si coniugano con il proposito di fornire una fondazione alla nuova disciplina scientifica. L'azione reciproca e le forme della sociazione e dell'interazione sono individuate come l'oggetto specifico su cui costruire l'autonomia della prospettiva di indagine sociologica. Si tratta di un'impostazione che, se nell'immediato non avrà una particolare fortuna, nel corso del tempo manifesterà un notevole impatto accreditando Simmel come terzo padre fondatore della sociologia, a fianco di Weber e Durkheim, anche se in posizione anomala e defilata. Ma Simmel, in "Sociologia", non si limita a offrire le coordinate di un possibile approccio metodologico, ce lo mostra all'opera in riferimento a un ampio campionario di temi e problemi, proponendo sviluppi che consentono, ancora oggi, di guardare da prospettive non scontate un complesso di questioni che vanno dal conflitto all'articolazione fra individuale e collettivo, dalle forme dell'inclusione differenziale alla costruzione sociale dello spazio.‎

La moda, come fenomeno sociale omnicomprensivo, anche se a volte solo accennato, ha sempre interessato i più attenti pensatori ed osservatori della realtà che li circondava. Simmel ha una propria diversità nell'affrontare questo tema che lo rende unico e un punto di riferimento imprescindibile per chi voglia comprendere un fenomeno spesso mistificato, relegato nella fatuità, superficialità, leggerezza. Un testo che non appare, nonostante il secolo intercorso, datato, ma rimane affascinante nella sua analisi e lettura.‎
