He has metamorphosed it into a Center of Excellence by creating 36 institutes of higher learning of higher learning and increasing the capacity of students from 225 to 9000 and raising the number of faculty member from 8 to 270 in such a short span of time. He has done pioneering research work in the field of drug development and his inventions are being used in the development of drugs for Neonatal jaundice and breast tumor. In India, about three fourth of the population, still live in rural areas. The notion that women in rural societies enjoy relatively higher social status appears to be a myth. Gender discrimination is a social reality irrespective of the nature of societies and no universally applicable rule exist to measure the degree of status of women in various societies. About The Author:- Rani Mehta, born in Mauritius, is presently a senior lecturer in the Department of Sociology, Panjab University; Chandigarh. She has an excellent record to her credit and was awarded Gold Medal by the Panjab University, Chandigarh for standing First in M.A. Sociology, examination in 1999. Besides, she was recipient of Gadgil Gold Medal of Panjab University, Chandigarh for standing first among all the Social Sciences subjects in the same year.
