br. Da almeno vent'anni, la critica sociologica non è più di moda nel campo degli studi letterari. Eppure il rigore e il tecnicismo delle analisi formali non esclude affatto il ricorso alle indagini di tipo storico-sociale: al contrario, è necessario che queste due prospettive si integrino e arricchiscano reciprocamente. Per questo il volume presenta un'antologia di testi classici (o avviati a diventarlo) che affianca filosofi politici come Marx, Gramsci, Sartre e Benjamin, sociologi come Escarpit e Bourdieu, critici letterari attenti alla storia come Bachtin, Auerbach, Jauss. Il volume, che si rivolge a un pubblico di studenti e studiosi ma anche di non addetti ai lavori, può essere così letto al tempo stesso come un'introduzione alla critica sociologica rispettosa dei valori formali dei testi letterari, oppure come un'introduzione alla metodologia critico-letteraria, ma sempre attenta all'importanza decisiva delle determinazioni storico-sociali.

br. "Non c'è più vergogna", così almeno si dice, e si tende a pensare che con la vergogna sia venuto meno anche ogni senso della dignità e dell'onore. Ma le emozioni non scompaiono, tutt'al più si trasformano. Muta il modo di esprimerle, muta la loro rilevanza individuale e sociale. Allora dove si è nascosta e quali forme assume oggi la vergogna? Mai come negli ultimi anni, soprattutto in Italia, si è fatto ricorso alla parola "vergogna", ma questa ha perso ogni sua connotazione semantica. Non si sa più che cosa significhi e diviene l'ultimo insulto alla moda contro avversari politici, concorrenti in affari, nemici, comunque gli altri. Di fatto non esistono società senza vergogna, poiché è un'emozione fondamentale per i legami sociali, ma anche per l'esercizio del potere. In questo volume si analizza come, nella società contemporanea, la frammentazione dell'insieme sociale, la spettacolarizzazione, l'iperindividualismo misto al nuovo conformismo del "così fan tutti" hanno dato vita a una sorta di vergogna "fai-da-te". Emozione che sembra nascere non dalle azioni che si compiono ma solo in rapporto alle prestazioni, al timore di risultare inadeguati nell'esibizione di sé. Gabriella Turnaturi, attraverso l'analisi di fatti di cronaca, testi letterari, film, interviste, svela i molti volti della vergogna contemporanea in relazione ai mutamenti delle sensibilità e dei valori condivisi, e ne indica un possibile uso positivo.
