Il volume è il frutto di un ciclo di esperienze messe in atto da un gruppo di studiosi di diverse discipline: in questo ambito, lo studio dei fenomeni di violenza all'interno della società si è unito alla riflessione teorica sui 'linguaggi della violenza'. L'atto che brutalmente interrompe ogni istanza di mediazione all'interno di un circuito comunicativo, o quello che stabilisce in modo coercitivo i rapporti di potere, hanno luogo seguendo codici, pratiche, tecniche del dominio spesso non facilmente decifrabili. L'idea è stata quella di far incontrare competenze diverse, spesso lontane e difficilmente comunicanti (dalla filologia classica agli studi filosofici e letterari, dalla sociologia alla psicologia), per un confronto su questi temi: in sostanza, una ricognizione del nesso tra violenza e dominio. In questo quadro di riferimento, sono stati affrontati anche i grandi temi della violenza di genere o della violenza specista. Il risultato dei lavori e di una intera stagione di appassionati dibattiti ed esperienze sul campo è condensato in questo libro. Con esso si vuole innanzitutto proporre uno strumento a coloro che sentono come ineludibile una riflessione sulle forme della violenza nella società contemporanea; al contempo, la res publica delle idee e le varie cittadelle della scienza potrebbero trovarvi un modello virtuoso di dialogo tra le discipline e di interazione sociale da riproporre e perfezionare, auspicabilmente, in nuovi contesti culturali.

br. Alla base di questo libro ci sono alcune idee di fondo. La prima è che la sociologia è una disciplina storica. Lo è in un duplice senso: ha un'origine storica, che ovviamente segna i suoi metodi e i suoi contenuti; il suo oggetto di studio sono fatti storici - le azioni degli uomini in società - che devono essere interpretati. In questa prospettiva, si può dire che la sociologia è ciò che hanno fatto - e tuttora fanno - i sociologi: per questo motivo, nel libro si è utilizzato un percorso basato sulla presentazione di singoli autori o scuole di pensiero e non un approccio de-storicizzato per concetti. La seconda mette in luce lo stretto legame storico e concettuale che esiste tra sociologia e mondo moderno in tre distinte fasi: l'avvento della modernità (sino alla fine della prima guerra mondiale); la modernità compiuta (sino al 1989); la modernità globalizzata (i nostri giorni). La terza idea si riferisce al fatto che la sociologia è una scienza sociale e deve essere compresa senza essere separata nettamente dalle altre discipline - come il diritto, la storia, l'antropologia, la scienza politica, la psicologia, l'economia - con cui condivide, nella sostanza, un unitario progetto scientifico. Il volume è composto di quattro parti: la prima fornisce una presentazione di cosa è la sociologia, discutendo, in particolare, i concetti di società e individuo. La seconda e terza parte presentano gli autori e gli approcci che hanno fatto, e fanno, la sociologia e le relative correnti, come il funzionalismo, lo strutturalismo, la teoria critica, ecc. Infine, la quarta presenta i problemi che la sociologia deve affrontare in un'epoca di globalizzazione.

br. Si dice che in una società meritocratica i redditi seguano i meriti. Ma in alcune società contemporanee che si presentano come meritocratiche le differenze di reddito sono enormi. Com'è possibile che alcuni abbiano meriti superiori ad altri di centinaia di volte? Da qui prende oggi le mosse il rifiuto del programma meritocratico che nella seconda metà del secolo scorso era la sostanza del 'sogno americano' ed era sottoscritto dal laburismo britannico e dal socialismo riformista europeo. Marco Santambrogio difende la meritocrazia con due ordini di argomenti. Dimostra da un lato che quelle società si presentano come meritocratiche ma non rispettano il principio irrinunciabile delle uguali opportunità. Dall'altro sostiene su solide basi filosofiche che il merito non si trasferisce dalle posizioni e dai posti di lavoro alle retribuzioni che li accompagnano. Non si butti dunque il bambino con l'acqua sporca. Si continui - o, in qualche caso, si cominci - a distribuire posti e posizioni rispettando le competenze, senza favoritismi e dando a tutti uguali opportunità. La meritocrazia consiste in questo. Quanto alle enormi differenze di reddito, si dimostri che sono meritate. Se non ci si riesce, una tassazione equa (richiesta dagli stessi principi meritocratici) si preoccuperà di ridurre le sperequazioni immeritate.
