‎ABOUT THE BOOK The book is a non-technical guide for popularizing household sanitation. It becomes necessary in view of growing urban population, dimini shing household areas, and increasing degradation of urban environment, especially in densely inhabited localities in big cities. It discusses a number of options for maintaining qualitative sanitation at individual household level. These options are cheap and easy to maintain and upkeep. The much ambitious Swachh Bharart Mission incentivized construction of crores of individual household, community, and public toilets across the country in the last five years with sole aim of making the country open defecation free. Our cities are not covered fully with the sewerage network. There is no proper arrangement for disposing the sewage. The sullage of newly constructed toilets may make the city environment more dirty and complex, if not handled properly. This necessitates proper planning for managing the faecal sludge and septage, in advance ABOUT THE AUTHOR U.B. Singh, M.P.A., Ph. D., D.Litt. is a unique combination of a Teacher, a Trainer, and a Researcher in public administration, especially in urban affairs. He was awarded a fellowship programme on Special Urban Management at the University College London, U.K. under the Colombo Plan, and also participated in an International Certificate Programme on Planning and Administering Good Governance at Asian Institute of Technology, Bangkok. He has taught Local Government and Development Administration in Lucknow University and Mizoram Central University, Aizawl. Under the aegis of the Regional Centre for Urban and Environmental Studies, a creation of Government of India in the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs at the Lucknow University he has conducted scores of executive development programmes, undertaken research studies, drafted unified municipal laws and rules, and provided consultancy. ‎ABOUT THE BOOK:- “Religion and Gurus in traditional and Modern India” is a consolidation of a series of publications and essays in the area of sociologoical apparaisal of religion, syncretism and modern gurus and godmen in India over period of last few decades. It is unfortunate that under the influence of western and particularly established branch of American sociology, with its exclusive focus on the structural- functional approach for a long time historical and analytical studies have almost withered away from Indian sociology. Ours is a humble attempt in this direction to revive this earlier thrust of enquiry in sociological appraisals. In this book we have attempted to look at the present and historical context. With the rise of communal forces in the post 1980s, it was difficult to ignore the socioeconomic and political situation. The present volume consists of eight essays. The first four essays deal with the role of Hinduism in modern Indian society and syncretism in the Indian context. The other two articles are on gurus in India. The other four essays are focused on the four leading godmen of western India. These four essays are based on our findings based on f ield inves t igat ion conducted mostly during the years and in 2010. Our study on Rajneesh was done much earlier during the late 1980s. ABOUT THE AUTHOR:- Dr. Uday Mehta is a sociologist with broad interdisciplinary background. He received his SSA and Ph.D from Tata Institute of Social Sciences and Mumbai University . He h a s contributed to the field of sociology through many of his books such as Agrarian Strategies in India, State Secularism and Religion: Western and Indian Experience (Co-editer: Asgar Ali Engineer), and Modern Godmen in India.
