L'orso è l'ultima delle grandi fiere che il mondo abbia conosciuto, un generatore di simboli adatto a individuare realtà diverse tra loro: dalle comunità gay "Bears" alla Coca-Cola, dalle costellazioni alle squadre di rugby. In questo insolito saggio, una vera e propria biografia dell'orso, si ripercorrono i rapporti intercorsi tra l'uomo e l'animale nei secoli e nelle culture: dalla Preistoria e il suo presunto "culto dell'orso" al mondo greco, dove l'animale dà nome a costellazioni e accompagna le ragazze di buona famiglia alla vita matrimoniale attraverso il rito dell'aratela; dal mondo romano, dove combatte contro altri animali, gladiatori, cristiani e criminali, all'età medievale, quando i cuccioli sono utilizzati da principi e re come dono per le dame e gli adulti come cavalcature di santi. Un'epoca in cui gli uomini possono trasformarsi in terribili Berserkir, i mitici guerrieri-orso delle saghe nordiche. Il libro, dedicato in modo particolare agli studenti, ma inteso anche per un pubblico più ampio, vuole offrire una riflessione antropologica sul tema attualissimo dell'identità culturale ed etnica. Partendo da una breve esposizione delle principali scuole antropologiche e del significato dell'antropologia culturale quale "studio della diversità", l'autrice procede a chiarire il concetto, spesso frainteso, di "identità di gruppo", sia essa culturale, etnica, religiosa o nazionale. Come fanno notare, ormai da tempo, i principali antropologi e sociologi italiani e stranieri, l'identità non è qualcosa di biologico, un tratto "naturale" che ciascuno di noi possiede dalla nascita. È, invece, un costrutto culturale creato storicamente in base a determinate necessità, modificabile con il passare del tempo e in base ai nuovi bisogni. Sostenuta da una memoria condivisa che contribuisce a conservare la coesione interna del gruppo, l'identità è comunque un fatto concreto e di importanza fondamentale per chi condivide un sentimento di appartenenza. I numerosi conflitti attuali, siano essi guerre o scontri ideologici, generati dall'incontro/scontro tra diverse identità, ne sono la prova. L'autrice conclude soffermandosi su due casi di attualità: il conflitto arabo-israelo-palestinese e i fondamentalismi religiosi.
