‎Grounded theory ist in letzten drei Jahrzehnten zu einem der am weitesten ver­ breiteten Verfahren der qualitativ-interpretativen Sozialforschung geworden. Grounded theory hat sich aber auch zu einem der am häufigsten gebrauchten Schlagworte im Zusammenhang mit qualitativer Sozialforschung entwickelt. Reihenweise wird sich in den Methodenteilen qualitativ-empirischer Studien auf dieses Verfahren berufen, als ließen sich damit die höheren Weihen interpre­ tativer Sozialforschung erlangen. Leider beschleicht den Leser und die Leserin beim Studium solcher Forschungsberichte nicht selten der Verdacht, dass man gerade dann gerne nach dem Gütesiegel >grounded theory' greift, wenn man selbst nicht so recht weiß, wie man zu Ergebnissen gekommen und welchem Verfahren man dabei gefolgt ist. Dafür gibt es Gründe, gute und schlechte. Zu den guten zählt, dass grounded theory sich weniger als präskriptives >Verfahren, versteht, dem haargenau zu folgen wäre. Vielmehr ist grounded theory eher gedacht als eine konzeptuell verdichtete, methodologisch begründete und in sich konsistente Sammlung von Vorschlägen, die sich für die Erzeugung gehaltvoller Theorien über sozialwissenschaftliche Gegenstandsbereiche als nützlich erwiesen haben. Zu den schlechten Gründen für die Etikettierung von Studien als grounded theory-basiert zählt das weit verbreitete Missverständnis, die wie auch immer be­ schaffene Verknüpfung von qualitativen Daten mit theoretischen Aussagen oder auch nur die ausschweifende Paraphrase empirischer Daten sei schon durch die Rede von der empirisch begründeten Theoriebildung gedeckt. Das ist natürlich nicht der Fall und von keinem der bei den Begründer der grounded theory so gemeint.
