"I was born twice: first as a baby girl on a remarkably smogless Detroit day in January of 1960; and then again as a teenage boy in an emergency room near Petoskey Michigan in August of 1974." And so begins Middlesex the mesmerizing saga of a near-mythic Greek American family and the "roller-coaster ride of a single gene through time." The odd but utterly believable story of Cal Stephanides and how this 41-year-old hermaphrodite was raised as Calliope is at the tender heart of this long-awaited second novel from Jeffrey Eugenides whose elegant and haunting 1993 debut The Virgin Suicides remains one of the finest first novels of recent memory. Eugenides weaves together a kaleidoscopic narrative spanning 80 years of a stained family history from a fateful incestuous union in a small town in early 1920s Asia Minor to Prohibition-era Detroit; from the early days of Ford Motors to the heated 1967 race riots; from the tony suburbs of Grosse Pointe and a confusing aching adolescent love story to modern-day Berlin. Eugenides's command of the narrative is astonishing. He balances Cal/Callie's shifting voices convincingly spinning this strange and often unsettling story with intelligence insight and generous amounts of humor: Emotions in my experience aren't covered by single words. I don't believe in "sadness" "joy" or "regret." . I'd like to have at my disposal complicated hybrid emotions Germanic traincar constructions like say "the happiness that attends disaster." Or: "the disappointment of sleeping with one's fantasy." . I'd like to have a word for "the sadness inspired by failing restaurants" as well as for "the excitement of getting a room with a minibar." I've never had the right words to describe my life and now that I've entered my story I need them more than ever. When you get to the end of this splendorous book when you suddenly realize that after hundreds of pages you have only a few more left to turn over you'll experience a quick pang of regret knowing that your time with Cal is coming to a close and you may even resist finishing it--putting it aside for an hour or two or maybe overnight--just so that this wondrous magical novel might never end. --Brad Thomas Parsons. But when she discovered her husband was having an affair her dream turned to nightmare her secure world crumbled. She was not alone. Experts tell us that in this country at least one of every three couples is touched by infidelity. And middle-aged couples today admit to twice the rate of infidelity as the preceding generation. While revelations about infidelity usually result in either divorce or an empty relationship Suzy was determined to fight back. First for her own life. Then if possible for her marriage and family. Suzy Farbmans personal odyssey is one of the first published by a woman who confronted infidelity and went on to save her marriage. It was a long and difficult struggle but in the process she learned much about what it takes to rebuild a relationship. Here too are the revelations and insights of her husband Burton. In his own words he presents the startling account of how a successful businessman took full measure of himself and then made profound changes to dismantle the layers of his deceptive life. All of us are repositories of past experiences and forgotten memories that help to mold our personalities and influence our behavior. Uncovering such hidden parts of ourselves often discloses how we remain shackled by forces beyond our awareness. Blue boards with white spine and metallic-blue lettering clean and bright. 345 pages. Synopsis Eight children once carved their names on the trunk of the great copper beech which shaded the schoolhouse in Shancarrig. Now those children are grown. For each one Shancarrig holds special memories. Publishers Weekly: Binchy Circle of Friends; The Lilac Bus is a consummate storyteller with a unique ability to draw readers into her tales of Irish life. Here again she mines sources rich in plot and character to produce a captivating narrative. The eponymous copper beech is a huge tree that shades the tiny schoolhouse in the village of Shancarrig. For generations graduating pupils have carved their initials on the massive trunk and the book examines what has become of some of them. Though each of the 10 chapters offers the perspective of a single character Binchy adroitly indicates the ways in which their lives intersect. Thus the allegedly stolen jewels that are discovered and stolen again in one early chapter become significant in later chapters. Long after two adulterous characters sneak into a Dublin hotel it emerges that they were spotted by a small soul from Shancarrig who passes on the information--with unforeseen consequences. A priest's dalliance with the sweet young schoolteacher is shown to have been been suspected by others in the village. The result is a charming and compelling series of interlocking stories about ordinary people who are given dimension through Binchy's empathetic insight. While this book is more fragmentary in structure than some of her previous novels it should leave Binchy's fans wholly satisfied. BOMC main selection. Nov. Biography: As an author Binchy's goal is simple: to let the story shine through. She told Oprah Winfrey "I do not have a particular literary style I am not experimental . I tell a story and I want to share it with my readers." As a result with her Ireland-set stories featuring strong heroines friendship and romance Binchy has gained quite a following since she became a bestselling author at age 43. Delacorte Pr Hardcover‎

Publishers Weekly: Couples trapped in ``angry'' marriages express their discord in a variety of ways shows Maslin Loving Men for All the Right Reasons . The author a psychologist here groups angry couples into six types: expressors who are given to perpetual quarreling; provokers pairs in which one spouse causes fights and the other plays ``the innocent''; suppressors who bury upset beneath a facade of calm; enactors who displace anger into such pursuits as overeating workaholism or adultery; symbolizers whose anger manifests symbolically as illness; and displacers who direct their wrath at an outside target a horrible boss for example. ‎New York New York U.S.A.: Nan A. Talese / Doubleday 2005. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $23.95. Tight spine bright pages. 255 pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. Synopsis Richard Winslow is in a rut. His wife is leaving him he drinks too much his once-acclaimed poetry has sunk into obscurity and he hasn't written anything worth reading for eighteen months. In truth he hasn't even tried. The offer of a visiting professorship at a small college in Montana hardly seems like the best way to renew his artistic glory but with his options and his bank account rapidly dwindling Winslow makes the move. Once there he rediscovers the forgotten pleasures of fly-fishing and meets a girl in worse shape than he is. Erica is a painfully thin student with a dragon tattooed on her neck. She is also sharp confrontational and fiercely intelligent. Their relationship formed over paper cups of Jim Beam in Winslow's office escalates when they impulsively take off on a road trip in Winslow's one prized possession a classic Lincoln Town Car. Traveling through Utah and Arizona they forge a bond neither anticipated. Winslow haunted by thoughts of death begins to embrace the promise of love and life. From breathtaking descriptions of fly-fishing in cold Montana streams to pitch-perfect renditions of intimate conversations Winslow In Love is a work of extraordinary beauty. As Newsweek wrote in a review of Nine Below Zero "Canty's forte is to examine human relationships with the precision of a Sue Miller or Louise Erdrich within the context of a fast-moving narrative. Once he's got you in his thrall you're as helpless as his lovers in the hands of fate.". Nan A. Talese / Doubleday Hardcover‎

Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 240 pages. From Publishers Weekly Drawing from her own experiences and those of others who have adopted children from outside the United States the author here addresses a range of issues arising from the controversial practice. As the single parent of two Korean-born daughters Register Living with Chronic Illness is often faced with the query posed in the book's title. How she and other parents help their foreign-born children ease into American society is examined and evaluated. Larger questions such as the ethics of uprooting children from their heritage the global issue of wealthy versus poor countries the racism often encountered by these children the wrenching issue of the rights of birth parents are presented in very personal terms. Internationally adoptive parents will find this an empathetic guide. Copyright 1990 Reed Business Information Inc. From Library Journal As the adoptive mother of two Korean girls Register has often been presented with this remark either spoken or implied. Yes the girls are "hers" now but the question does bring out some of the practical and ethical issues involved in cross-cultural adoption: are the parents in the wealthier nations "entitled" to raise children left homeless in other parts of the world by poverty or social stigma Do adoptive parents have a responsibility to their children's birth countries or to other disadvantaged children and their families What does it mean to "own" a child anyway and who can ultimately make that claim In this sensitive compassionate guide Register addresses these and other issues and shows how they are played out in the actual day-to-day experience of her own and other adoptive families. With the number of these adoptions increasing each year most public libraries will want to purchase this book. - Marcia G. Fuchs Guilford Free Lib. Ct. Free Pr Hardcover‎

Synopsis: From the mother of champion cyclist Lance Armstrong an extraordinary story of the resilience of the human spirit and the remarkable effect of great parenting. Lance Armstrong has dazzled the world with his six straight Tour de France championships his winning personality and his poignant victory over life-threatening cancer. Yet the adage that "behind every strong man there is a stronger woman" has never been more true than in Lance's case. His mother Linda Armstrong Kelly is a force of nature whose determination optimism and sheer joie de vivre not only nurtured one of our era's greatest athletes but fueled her own transformation from a poverty-stricken teen in the Dallas projects to a powerful role model for mothers everywhere. This luminous memoir written with humor and compassion tells Linda's story of survival. Pregnant at age seventeen kicked out of her home and mired in an abusive relationship Linda was a perfect candidate for disaster. But armed with a fierce belief in herself as a work in progress and buoyed by a tidal wave of love for her little boy Linda flouted statistics and became both a corner-office executive and a no-nonsense empowering mom whose desire to excel was contagious. Her resolve to find the diamond in the Dumpster the blessing in every bummer set an extraordinary example for Lance and will inspire everyday moms to dream big and make a difference. Funny resonant down-to-earth and utterly unforgettable No Mountain High Enough is exhilarating proof that sheer willpower can and occasionally does triumph over adversity. From Linda Armstrong Kelly's No Mountain High Enough: This is what it means to be a mother I realized. It had nothing to do with being old enough or knowing everything or keeping to a strict schedule. It had to do with loving someone with a love so huge the rest of the world becomes insignificant by comparison. No fear I felt would ever amount to anything compared to what I felt for my child. No task would ever be too hard for me. No one would ever be able to make me feel small. I was The Mama. You don't get any bigger than that. Broadway Books Hardcover‎

Nicely illustrated throughout. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 307 pages. From Booklist Foster care is designed to provide for children up until the age of 18 but what happens after that Shirk and Stangler note in the introduction to their study that in today's society young people don't tend to reach full maturity until their mid-twenties and most children leaving foster care aren't even equipped with the basic tools a high-school diploma a driver's license or state ID work experience the average 18-year-old possesses. Shirk and Stangler examined several individual cases in various states to see how well the children faired. One chapter examines three brothers whose fates diverged: one is currently in jail for armed robbery another died in a car crash and the third is happily married with a new business. One young woman makes it through a series of foster homes and high schools to earn a hard-won college degree and a position as a teacher while one young man yearns for a family but keeps running afoul of the law. ‎The Epidemic: The Rot of American Culture Absentee and Permissive Parenting and the Resultant Plague of Joyless Selfish Children‎

‎New York New York U.S.A.: Regan Books 2003. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $24.95. Tight spine bright pages. 257 pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. Synopsis From an esteemed child psychiatrist: a bold fresh and controversial look at the faddish child-rearing practices that have created a nation of children who are depressed alienated often amoral and all too often violent. The shock of the Columbine shootings and other school violence has generated a national debate and there's a dawning realization that something incomprehensible is happening: our privileged pampered children are turning into monsters at an alarming rate. With years of study and first-hand experience Dr. Robert Shaw exposes the roots of what he calls The Epidemic: the violence and the more subtle behaviour problems that are jeopardizing a generation. In this eye-opening book Dr. Shaw explains that the "advanced" parenting methods experts have promoted for the last thirty years have helped to create a nation of children who are detached loners unable to form meaningful relationships. From infancy through the teen years Dr. Shaw provides a map back to sanity that tracks specific misguided parenting techniques and shows parents how to get and keep their children on track and create the environment necessary for a healthy psychological future. Some of the important ground Dr. Shaw covers includes: The myths and realities of bonding and attachment How to recognize when day care is working - and when it isn't Landmarks to look for in your children's moral and ethical development Self-centeredness versus self-esteem Keeping the media from mugging your child What can be done with a child who is out of control Dr. Shaw challenges us to confront a very real problem thenhelps us take steps forward using common sense and humanity. The Epidemic calls us to become better parents-and feel better about the choices we make for our children. Regan Books Hardcover‎

‎Stollman Aryeh Lev‎

‎The Far Euphrates‎

‎New York New York U.S.A.: Riverhead Books 1997. Book. Near-Fine. Hardcover. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-fine condition. Publisher's remainder stamp on bottom. NO price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $21.95. Dustcover chows light wear NO tears. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 209 pages. Synopsis: Blending the everyday with the mystical the mundane with the extraordinary and the waking world with the world of dreams The Far Euphrates is the story of Alexander the lonely son of a rabbi in Windsor Canada whose small world is made up of his parents and the Cantor and the Cantor's wife. As a young boy Alexander is told a secret he cannot bear to know and as a result he attempts to accumulate as much knowledge as he can as if he might then be able to unlock the secrets of the universe itself. Alexander fills his solitary existence with stories: the legend of his great-grandfather a rare-book dealer who left his family in Frankfurt to travel to what was once ancient Mesopotamia as tutor to an exiled Persian prince; tales of flying carpets and djins in bottles; the dark fairy tales of the Brothers Grimm; Bible stories - the creation of the universe Lot's wife the Tower of Babel. And yet Alexander's real life is touched by an array of people as strange and memorable as those in any story: a dying wealthy girl who bequeaths to him a valuable sapphire; the stunning young wife of Henry Ford II; a Gypsy prophetess whose cryptic words change forever his view of his mother; and the Cantor's twin sister who with the Cantor was a victim of Auschwitz's Dr. Mengele. As the inner stories of his imagination give shape and meaning to the stories that he lives and as the realities around him begin to impinge on his imagination Alexander must learn to recognize certain truths that he is reluctant to accept. In translucent prose Aryeh Lev Stollman has created a stunning portrait of the coming of age of a young man's soul. And yet the novel is more. Through the story of a lonely boy The Far Euphrates questions how we can find meaning in a post-Holocaust world; how we define the notion of home in our modern time; where the boundaries lie between sanity madness and transcendence; and what our responsibilities are to ourselves and to one another. Publishers Weekly: Reminiscent of a Hasidic tale in its deceptively quiet gentle tone this masterful debut offers up its darkest secrets with heartbreaking delicacy. The son of a rabbi in Windsor Ontario Aryeh Alexander ben Shelomo lives in a sheltered world tightly circumscribed by his parents' friendship with the family of Cantor Bernard Seidengarn which includes his wife Berenice and his twin sister and fellow Auschwitz survivor Hannalore. This tight-knit family circle can't banish unspoken memories of the Holocaust memories that debilitate Alexander and send him into escapist reveries. When his mother Sarah worries over his daydreaming ways the three women consult a gypsy "prophetess"; later when 16-year-old Alexander withdraws to his room for a year his father consults a Hasidic rebbe. Thus buffeted between "my mother's uncontrollable fears and my father's unanswerable intellectual and spiritual pursuits" Alexander harbors a disturbing secret a secret even he doesn't fully understand about the horrors that the twins suffered in the laboratory of Auschwitz's mad doctor Josef Mengele. Though steeped in religious sensibility and learning this warm contemplative novel works on its readers' most visceral sympathies and fears. Riverhead Books Hardcover‎
