NO writing or tears inside book. 255 pages. Synopsis It is estimated that an alarming four out of five married couples experience infidelity. Growing up with a mother and grandmother who painfully accepted the existence of their respective husbands' mistresses Ann Pearlman set out to beat the odds. She embarked on a career as a therapist who helped hundreds of unhappily married patients build new lives. She also found a husband with whom she felt secure. But after thirty years of rewarding marriage and parenthood she discovered that her husband was having an affair with one of his art students. Infidelity is the moving account of her shattered trust and the women in her family who endured similar wounds in the radically different climate of America before 1960. Written in precisely drawn vivid scenes Infidelity traces Pearlman's first understanding of unfaithfulness through her father. A gifted and intelligent man he took the time to explain Freud's theories to her during dinner a meal often served late because of his after-work trysts. Falling in love with Ty an African American football player and artist she basked in a strong marriage that even shrugged off interracial bias and inspired her to write a book on how to foster vitality in a marriage. Yet as her own unraveled she arrived at a turning point that would test everything she had taught and believed. Compelling reading for men and women alike Infidelity is an eye-opening testament to commitments made and broken and the experience of matrimony across three very different yet strikingly connected lifetimes. Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 213 pages. From Library Journal In the latest from the stylistically distinctive Barthelme middle-aged Ray and Jewel Kaiser enter Paradisea casino in run-down Biloxi Mississippi. Copyright 1997 Reed Business Information Inc. From Kirkus Reviews Barthelme's latest exercise in existential pulse-taking Painted Desert 1995 etc. focuses on the democratic vice of gambling though it's less a study in addiction than a celebration of risk-taking and downward mobility. Raymond Kaiser his wife Jewel and her daughter from a previous marriage RV all quietly enjoy life in Biloxi Miss. a ``simple easy cheap'' town on the Gulf Coast. With work as an architect drying up Ray finds himself increasingly interested in the glitzy world of offshore gambling especially at the Paradise where Jewel wins over $1000 on their first trip. In their daily life ``everything's dull'' so it's no wonder that Jewel and Ray enjoy the visceral excitement of gambling. They soon graduate from slots to the blackjack table and slowly find themselves down by over $4000. Meanwhile back home RV seems headed into a downward spiral of teen rebellion--boy trouble substance experimenting and body piercings. It doesn't help that her parents are largely absent spending their nights at Paradise. When Ray's father dies it sends him further into a midlife crisis. He comes to see himself no longer as ``an ordinary guy'' but as a full-time gambler. The problem is--he's not very good at it. Spending 18 hours at a time in the casino does nothing but increase his debts. Maxing out a handful of credit cards he finds himself over $35000 in the hole but still juiced by ``the losses the excitement the hopes the desperation the high.'' Quitting architecture altogether Ray and Jewel decide to downsize selling their belongings and moving in with Ray's mother. In their new simplicity this besieged family finally finds that happiness is not in middle-class stability nor in the quick fix of gambling's artificial Paradise but in their everyday Edenic lives. Barthelme strains for topical textures--cool repartee is interrupted only by channel surfing. But the real payoff is straight-up and timeless: a novel of surprising heart and soul. ‎Brodkey Harold‎

‎The Runaway Soul‎

‎Farrar Straus & Giroux 1991. Book. Near-Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. A photo of this book is available. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $30.00. Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. 835 pages. Synopsis Acclaimed New Yorker writer Brodkey set the literary world ablaze with this much-talked-about debut novel--a literary tour de force about an adopted child in the early 1930s who is raised in the St. Louis household of his cousins. "Impressive. . . . The work of a lifetime. . . . As haunted by love death and madness as The Oresteia".--Washington Post Book World. Annotation No writer at work today has plumbed the vagaries of a mind in action with the daring and insight of Harold Brodkey the author of Stories in an Almost Classical Mode. This mesmerizing and heartbreaking novel extends to the reader a rare chance to change his understanding of himself and his world as the author offers an unparalleled access to the inner world of another human being. Publishers Weekly The Novel We Have All Been Waiting For turns out to be a sometimes brilliant evocation of the condition of being pulsing with sensory imagery and with flashes of insight about the inherent qualities of good and evil and the presence of death in life. Brodkey's prose is supple playful often lyrical but his obsession with words and the sensations they evoke is a detriment to dramatic tension. Thus the novel is also flabby bloated overwritten overwrought often tediously self-indulgent. Exquisitely sensitive and introspective Wiley Silenowicz looks back over a painful childhood and youth spent with his foster parents Lila and S.L. and his slightly crazy half-sister Nonie. His stream-of-consciousness narration is an attempt to resolve his relationships with all of them especially with obnoxious manipulative Nonie whom he may have cheated of her parents' love. In a series of vignettes slowly too slowly accruing into the story of his life Wiley's neuroses are examined and explained most of them attributable to the suppurating wound of his natural mother's death. In some respects Brodkey is a master of his craft. His ear for dialogue is beautifully tuned especially in capturing Lila's insistent cliche-laden brassy voice. His meditations on language and his attempts to express the essence of an experience are provocative although in some nearly interminable chapters such as one called On Nearly Getting Laid the repetition of minute detail renders sex virtually unerotic. Moreover since these characters have already appeared in Stories in an Almost Classical Mode much of the time the reader feels a sense of deja vu. In the end the sheer wizardry of words tumbling on the page the turbulent torrent of memories and desires contribute to an intriguing fugal meditation on existence but do not amount to a compelling novel. Then come the shocking charges that would threaten her new love her new "family" . that force her to prove she is a good mother. Annotation Sue Miller's critically acclaimed bestseller The Good Mother is now being reissued in trade paperback. This thought-provoking and powerful novel asks the question "to whom is a woman more deeply bound -- the man she loves or her own child" Linda Wolf What makes the book truly remarkable is its authenticity.one of the great pleasures of The Good Mother comes.from the author's skilfull rendition of.the common questions of motherhood. I think virtually no one has done it better. -- The New York Times Book Review Biography Sue Miller is an expert in limning the pain of endings but if this were the extent of her talents she probably would not be as successful as she is. In Miller's books one broken relationship often leads to the development of another. Her stories may not offer pat answers and perfect love stories but readers find something more rewarding in the end. Perennial Paperback‎

‎Lip Service: The Myth of Female Virtue in Love Sex and Friendship‎

‎HarperCollins 1996. Book. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Very-good copy. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $23.00. 348 pages. Tight spine. NO writing or tears inside book. Pages show tanning. Synopsis Women aren't the best of friends models of sisterly support or paragons of emotional honesty. From the woman who sleeps with the boss to the woman who tells her friend she looks fine when she doesn't to the woman who pressures a male friend to have sex no woman is immune to the impulses of envy competitiveness aggression and coercion. None of this should come as a surprise women are human beings after all. Yet despite all evidence to the contrary the myth of women's moral superiority persists. And although gender roles are now more fluid than ever before especially among the generations born after 1960 the rhetoric of polarization continues. In Lip Service journalist Kate Fillion challenges our cherished convictions about women's natural instincts and shows how our most ingrained beliefs about gender differences actually blind us to the complexities and contradictions in women's and men's behavior. More important she demonstrates in powerful terms how confining and self-destructive this skewed perspective is for women in all aspects of their lives - including office politics their intimate relationships with men their friendships with women and their own self-images. Based on extensive academic research and in-depth interviews with North American women and men Lip Service paints a startling and ultimately very human portrait of the widening divide between women's actions and how we choose to interpret them. Acknowledging this is not antiwoman. In fact Kate Fillion so convincingly argues confronting the darker side of women's behavior frees us from the unequal moral standards and restrictive typecasting of the currently accepted codes of conduct and allows women to be honest about who they are and what they want. Through examples that are both startlingly intimate and deeply political Dr. Lerner provides us with bold insights into the countless ways and whys that women show the false and hide the real. Deception is not a "woman's problem" or even a uniquely human phenomenon: From viruses to large mammals deception is continuously at play. We are all affected by lying and faking by silence and pretending by self-deception and by brave - as well as misguided - efforts to tell the truth. Dr. Lerner shows us that women's failure to live authentically and speak truly deserves our closest attention. She illustrates how pretending is so closely linked with femininity that it is quite simply what the culture teaches us to do. Truth-telling is the central challenge in women's lives the foundation of intimacy self-regard and joy. At the center of a woman's life is the quest to discover speak and live her own truth to cease living a life dictated and defined by others. Yet in the name of "truth" or "being ourselves" we may hurt others by disregarding their different realities and move situations from bad to worse. How can we approach the process of truth-telling of knowing and being known of refining and deepening our disclosures to one another Like peace-making truthtelling does not just "happen." Sometimes it must be worked toward and planned. Drawing on more than two decades of clinical experience Dr. Lerner articulates her rich philosophy and thoughtful guidelines about speaking out and holding back. She shows us how honesty can sometimes impede truth-telling and how pretending can be a bold move toward the truth rather than a misdirected flight from it. She examines how patriarchy shapes what truths a woman can uncover share and invent about herself. HarperCollins Hardcover‎

‎Wifework: What Marriage Really Means for Women‎

‎New York New York U.S.A.: Bloomsbury Pub Plc USA 2002. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First U.S. Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. Stated First U.S. Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $24.95. 282 pages. Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears. Synopsis Men get one thing from marriage that women never do: they get wives. Husbands and wives may say they are committed to equality and indeed many believe that they live that way. Yet whether they are employed or not wives still perform an astounding share of the physical emotional and organizational labor in marriage-everything from housework to 'sex work'. 'Wifework' is shorthand for this relentless routine of husband maintenance and it's the reason that a married man is so much better off than a bachelor. He does fewer chores is happier healthier and generally more satisfied. A married woman by contrast will perform two to three times more unpaid physical emotional and organizational labor than her husband-and for a fraction of the rewards. Women today initiate three-quarters of all divorces and wifework Maushart argues is at the core of their disillusionment. If family life is worth saving the job description for wives will have to be rewritten. Bolstering her own personal experience as a twice-married mother of three with substantial research and broad statistical evidence Maushart delves into history to explore the theoretical and evolutionary reasons behind marital inequity. Her arguments are passionate but she keeps her sense of humor intact throughout producing a work that is lucid provocative and resonant. Bloomsbury Pub Plc USA Hardcover‎

Tight spine bright pages. 249 pages. Psychotherapist Broder director of Philadelphia's Rational-Emotive Institute here does for couples what he did for singles in The Art of Living Single. In his inimitable and provocative way he urges individuals to consult their own needs not to conform to externally imposed standards of what constitutes a ``proper'' relationship. First Broder discusses the foundation of lasting love relationships: without passion he says a relationship is merely platonic; without comfort it is destined to burn itself out. Next he shows couples how to overcome initial obstacles set ground rules and communicate better. Later sections tackle troubled relationships and such issues as jealousy monogamy vs. ``synogamy'' Broder's term for any relationship that is not monogamous whether to become parents and ending a relationship with dignity. The material is fresh even controversial at times as in the section on the potential benefits of outside affairs. Broder fittingly encourages readers to study only those sections that apply and emphasizes that his goal is ``to help you to understand your choices--not to moralize.'. Hyperion Books Hardcover‎

‎On Intimate Terms: The Psychology of Difference in Lesbian Relationships‎

‎Baltimore Maryland U.S.A.: Univ of Illinois Pr 1993. Book. Very Good . Trade Paperback. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. A photo of this book is available. Very-good condition. NO remainder marks or clippings. Covers are clean NO tears. NO tears inside book. 184 pages. 24 pages show light highlighting and/or writing. Does NOT interfere with reading. Synopsis On Intimate Terms looks at the internal logic of lesbian relationships arguing that they are not patterned after heterosexual ones but rely on the interplay of psychosexual differences between women. The book suggests that everyone seeks psychic complementarity with an Other in intimate relationships as a way of supporting personal growth and development. A complementary partner is one who is different in some individually meaningful way not necessarily in terms of gender. Drawing upon interviews with individuals and lesbian couples literature on lesbian psychology and contemporary psychoanalytic theory Beverly Burch observes a special attraction between primary lesbians - women who have been attracted to other women from an early age - and lesbians who formerly were heterosexual. This difference may be a source of tension for lovers but it also attracts and bonds them in conscious and unconscious ways. The intimacy between lesbian partners permits interpersonal exchanges that foster the continuing development of each according to Burch. This development can occur in three areas with the significance of each varying from couple to couple. It can be a source of both conscious and unconscious psychosexual exchanges a way in which each partner can experience "the road not taken" through her relationship with the other. The partners' different histories can reflect different ways of negotiating difference itself a pivotal theme in the development of adult women. And gender role identities related to different developmental experiences can be played with expanding the experience of being female in a way that can challenge gender categories. NO writing or tears inside book. Tight spine clean pages. 467 pages. Synopsis The U.S. has experienced a dramatic increase in births to unmarried women in recent decades--from 4% of births in 1950 with most of the babies then adopted to more than 30% today. Melissa Ludtke's book is the only in-depth analysis of this radical change in family formation to compare and contrast the lives of these mothers of varying ages and economic circumstances. Publishers Weekly Nearly one-third of U.S. children are now born to single mothers according to Ludtke a former correspondent for Time magazine in this nonjudgmental informative study. The 45-year-old single woman here contrasts the stories of single teenage mothers with older career women who raise children without husbands. Limiting her interviews to several dozen women living near her home in the Cambridge Mass. area Ludtke does not offer a definitive analysis but her skilled anecdotal research buttressed by academic studies gives a human face to a social phenomenon that deserves attention. Because teenage mothers often lack financial resources their daily lives can differ significantly from those of older single mothers. But Ludtke notes similarities as well between the two groups such as the feeling that motherhood will make their lives more meaningful and a concern that their offspring relate to positive male figures. Ludtke argues poignantly that adolescent pregnancy will be prevented only when adults develop "the patience and perseverance to stick with troubled youth across the span of their adolescence." Biography Melissa Ludtke drew national attention in 1978 when as a reporter for Sports Illustrated she took Major League Baseball to court to gain women reporters equal access to athletes' locker rooms. She then became a correspondent for Time where her articles including more than twenty cover stories focused on family and children. While researching and writing this book she had fellowships at Harvard Radcliffe and the Columbia School of Journalism. Ludtke is a graduate of Wellesley College and lives in Cambridge Massachusetts. ‎Ann Arbor Michigan U.S.A.: Longmeadow Press 1995. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. A photo of this book is available. Stated First Edition. Near-new condition. Appears unread. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Tight spine bright pages. NO writing marks or tears. 191 pages. Publishers Weekly Grymes who manages a division of a social services corporation and Stanton a human resources administrator offer a carefully reasoned study which should prove useful to women. Their two basic premises are: although the balance of power is shifting the American workplace is a man's world; and by nature or nurture men and women are different. Although the authors maintain that this book is not intended as a how-to guide the dozens of case histories they adduce will surely help women to overcome their inclinations to be too deferential too accommodating and too sensitive to the male ego. Grymes and Stanton here confront difficult situations like those involving clients who expect special favors. They also deal with sexual harassment but only as part of the larger picture of gender harassment. Jan. Library Journal The authors who are longtime managers describe the male ego as the behavior that results from ``a strong need to maintain a sense of superiority and control.'' It may be expressed covertly by ignoring or downplaying women's contributions or overtly through sexual harassment and exclusion from decision-making processes. The authors are more concerned with ``how come'' than ``how to''; their extensive interviews with women illustrate a wide range of strategies for coping with gender-based conflicts about style authority and expectations. Though the authors hold out the promise of new management styles that make use of women's intuition and collaborative strengths many of their examples make it clear that ``barriers to success are real for women who expect to exert power.'' Like Beth Milwid's Working with Men Berkley Pub. 1992 this book offers no universal prescriptions. Recommended for public libraries.-- Mary-Ellen Mort Univ. of California at Berkeley Extension. But internationally renowned relationship expert and best-selling author Michele Weiner-Davis tells women not to abandon ship and assures them that just one person can truly effect relationship change. Step by step she teaches women how by making minor shifts in their own actions they can create major changes in their men and in their love lives. Convinced that not all efforts to change men are created equal Weiner-Davis urges women to stop shooting from the hip and doing what "feels right" and start being more strategic and results-oriented. She teaches women "male-friendly" unorthodox and subtle methods of persuasion that influence men to be more responsive and accomodating - without their even knowing it! Her straightforward practical sometimes politically incorrect advice inspires readers to move beyond thir self-limiting belief that men don't change. Library Journal The title which promises an easy fix is meant to lure readers. Actually this work is about how women can change their approach to their partners which means changing themselves first thus improving their relationships. As a seminar leader and frequent visitor on the talk-show circuit Weiner-Davis knows how to reach an audience. The best-selling author of Divorce Busting Summit 1992 and other works presents her ideas in a friendly and practical manner. Although some may balk at what appears at first glance to be manipulation others will want to try Weiner-Davis's advice. Granted that the author may have oversimplified complex relationships her ideas provide at least a starting point for women who are unhappy. ‎Why Do I Love These People Honest and Amazing Stories of Real Families‎

‎Random House 2005. Book. Fine. Hardcover. First Edition. 8vo - over 7" - 9" tall. Near-new condition. Stated First Edition. NO remainder marks or price clippings. Price inside dustcover: $24.95. 383 pages. NO writing marks or tears inside book. Tight spine bright pages. Synopsis We all have an imaginary definition of a great family. We imagine what it would be like to belong to such a family. No fights over the holidays. No getting on one another's nerves. Respect for individual identity. Mutual support without being intrusive. So many people believe they are disqualified from having a better family experience primarily because they compare their own family with the mythic ideal and their reality falls short. Is that a fair standard to judge against In the pages of Why Do I Love These People Po Bronson takes us on an extraordinary journey. It begins on a river in Texas where a mother gets trapped underwater and has to bargain for her own life and that of her kids. Then a father and his daughter return to their tiny rice-growing village in China hoping to rekindle their love for each other inside the walls of his childhood home. Next a son puts forth a riddle asking us to understand what his first experience of God has to do with his Mexican American mother. Every step and every family on this journey is real. Calling upon his gift for powerful nonfiction narrative and philosophical insight Bronson explores the incredibly complicated feelings that we have for our families. Each chapter introduces us to two people a father and his son a daughter and her mother a wife and her husband and we come to know them as intimately as characters in a novel following the story of their relationship as they struggle resiliently through the kinds of hardships all families endure. Some of the people manage to save their relationship while others find a better life only afterletting the relationship go. From their efforts the wisdom in this book emerges. We are left feeling emotionally raw but grounded and better prepared to love through both hard times and good time. In these twenty mesmerizing stories we discover what is essential and elemental to all families and in doing so slowly abolish the fantasies and fictions we have about those we fight to stay connected to. In Why Do I Love These People Bronson shows us that we are united by our yearnings and aspirations: Family is not our dividing line but our common ground. The Washington Post - Carolyn See Bronson is no Pollyanna; he tells stories about himself that reveal his own compulsion to "succeed" to be "better" but he reminds himself and us repeatedly that those aren't the things that count. Love and decency and self-control count. And the integrity of his prose style as well as the incredible sweetness of those he writes about give him 24-karat credibility. Biography Although it took him some time to find his literary niche Po Bronson has settled into his role as social documentarian with great ease penning two books that have become tremendous commercial critical and personal successes in the process.
