Edition originale, accompagnée du "Supplément" donné par Pluche en 1753 pour répondre aux attaques contre son livre, en particulier sur la question de la pédagogie et de l’enseignement des langues. Postulant que le langage est d’ordre providentiel et qu’il contient, dès lors, des traces de sa nature première, l’auteur recherche l’origine et les mécanismes de la formation des langues. Il propose, en contrepoint, une méthode novatrice de leur apprentissage fondée sur la découverte progressive, la mise en situation, la fréquentation des textes et l'explication. Une partie de l'ouvrage est consacrée à une théorie du Beau et à l'enseignement des beaux-arts. (Conlon, 'Siècle des Lumières', 51:959 et 53:974 pour le supplément).
