The recipients were John Bernard Myers publisher of the Tiber Press and founder of the Tibor de Nagy Gallery in New York and his companion Herbert Machiz a theatrical director. <br /><br />Myers championed many New York poets of the 1950s and published early works by Frank O'Hara John Ashbery Kenneth Koch and many others either in separate editions or through his poetry journal Semi-Colon. One of Merrill's early poems was included in an issue of this publication. In addition a number of the pieces are individually signed by Micheline some in the photocopy some for this publication. The rarest of Micheline's assemblages which he would create from time to time for specific occasions or to raise funds. <br /></p><p>OCLC shows no institutional holdings. NY: New Directions 1983. First edition first prnt. Inscribed by Eberhart on the title page. "To -- with warmest regards Richard Eberhart." Eberhart dated his inscription at the bottom of the page as was his custom "November 1984" and also wrote "see back page" with an arrow. On the back page Eberhart has written a 125 word note that reads as a response to the inscrptee's question. "I do recall Tennyson's 'The Eagle' but should look it up." Eberhart then reminisces about his introduction to writing poetry. "I want to tell you that when I was fifteen. our teacher asked the class to write a poem. I went home and found in the family library the poems of Alfred Lord Tennyson. I fell excitedly under their spell because of the musicality of his verse and the perfection of his rhymes . it was as enthralling as running the hundred yard dash. So I got my start with Tennyson. " Dated "11/15/84." The content of this reminiscence with many similar sentences appeared the following year in "A Celebration of Teachers" 1985: 14-15 published by the NCTE and reprinted in "Negative Capability." Vol.VI nos II & III. That issue inscribed by Eberhart on the title to the same person is included in this lot. "To --- Greetings and all best wishes from Richard Eberhart" and dated by him at the bottom of the page "Hanover N.H. October 11 1986." The magazine is in Fine condition. The Introduction notes: "In the night of 25th May 1820 the New York Park Theater was destroyed by fire. The proprietors resolved to rebuild it; and while the work was proceeding the managers Messrs. Price & Simpson published an advertisement offering the freedom of the theater to the author of the best poetic address consisting of not more than 60 and not less than 50 lines to be pronounced on the opening of the theater." Among the pieces included in this anthology is the second appearance of MacDonald Clarke the "mad poet" whose works are notably scarce. Gaucher 1788.î Near contemporary full mottled calf marbled endpapers edges gilt; margins shaved close affecting some pagination p.24 with light impression of p. 1 p.27 with deckled edge; spine headcap chipped joints tender extremities lightly rubbed. An ephemeris plural: ephemerides; from the Greek word ἐφήμερος ephemeros ìdailyî is a table of values that gives the positions of astronomical objects in the sky at a given time or times. Different kinds of ephemerides are used for astronomy and astrology. Even though this was also one of the first applications of mechanical computers an ephemeris will still often be a simple printed table. Contents in this copy include a Calendar with gold numbers a Sun cycle and Age of the Moon and dates for important liturgical holidays among them Ash Wednesday Easter and Pentecost. Very Good. Curious and strange group of poems concerning deathwritten by Ann Catherine Wing Flasen. Most of the named deceased persons about which the poems were written lived in Upstate New York Rheinbeck Bainbridge and surrounding areas. Poems are dated and run from 1800 to the 1840's. One poem is written for a murder victim Catherine Berringer of Rhinebeck poisoned with arsenic by her husband. 78 pages almost entirely concerning death. A previous owner purchased the manuscript at an estate sale in Albany New York where it had been culled from an attic. <br/><br/> unknown books
