The contents offer textual and statistical descriptions of the state of missionary work in different Chinese provinces and cities alongside articles by Timothy Richard and other missionaries on secret societies and on Buddhism Taoism and Islam. Part II the survey of recent progress is subdivided into the dozens of Western groups proselytizing in the country by century's end. Emphasis is placed on educational and medical work and where applicable the operations of printing presses. Octavo 245 x 160 mm. With 2 large colour folding maps 12 full-page maps printed in black and red 3 folding tables tables in text errata slipped tipped in facing p. 335. Lán ê kiù-tsú Iâ-so· Ki-tok ê Sin Iok The New Testament in Amoy vernacular.
London: British and Foreign Bible Society 1891. Used on missionary service in Penang A scarce missionary imprint: an early edition of the first New Testament in the Hokkien dialect of Xiamen and southern Fujian province. This was the copy of Daniel Davies Moore among the first Methodist missionaries in Penang which had an established community of Hokkien speakers. The translation was the work of four members of the English Presbyterian Mission: William Macgregor William S. Swanson Hugh Cowie and James L. Maxwell. The first edition was printed in Scotland for private circulation in 1873 and the same plates were used to produce editions in 1880s and 1890s. Moore 1856-1946 "left Canada for Singapore in April 1891 as a foreign missionary. There he was commissioned by the newly established Methodist Church in Singapore to start work in Penang for the English-speaking community. In July 1891 he started the first English service at the Penang Town Hall. The following month the first sacramental service for eight people was conducted at the rented residence of the missionaries at Carnavon Street" Dictionary of Christian Biography in Asia. His ownership inscription "Davies Moore Penang Dec. 7th 1892" is on the first blank verso. Octavo. Original green pebble-grain cloth spine lettered in gilt and ruled in black boards blocked in black yellow coated endpapers edges sprinkled red. Sing Iak S Fok-Iung Su The Four Gospels in romanized Shanghainese.
Shanghai: American Bible Society 1905. The Word on the street First edition traced in two institutions only designed to aid Christian missionaries preaching to China's 18 million Shanghainese speakers. Although unstated on the title page this version was prepared by John Alfred Silsby a presbyterian missionary eventually resident in the city for four decades. During the 19th century Christian missionaries produced transliteration and romanization systems for over 20 Chinese dialects. The first romanized Shanghainese gospel was published in 1856 Matthew edited by Chao Yin Sung and the first romanized New Testament appeared in 1870-1. Silsby 1858-1939 issued the Gospel of Matthew as a standalone work in 1895 and this edition of the gospels followed a decade later. In 1913 he completed his important reference An English-Chinese Vocabulary of the Shanghai Dialect. This work was printed by the Presbyterian Mission Press on behalf of the American Bible Society. Copies are held by Cambridge University and National Taiwan University. Octavo in 4 parts. Original brown moiré cloth over limp card covers spine lettered in gilt. Likely Shanghai: no stated publisher 1920. Held in only one institutional library First edition the majority of the 31 notices concerning pilotage harbours and port sanitation. Accompanying the text are two anchorage plans and the full bilingual text of the 1918 Ningbo harbour regulations which were formally propagated in 1919. The ports and harbours covered include Shanghai Wenzhou Chefoo Tianjin Hankou Fuzhou Amoy Swatow Santuao and Canton. While some notices merely repeal or tweak existing orders 14 provide substantial new directions for navigators and shipping often extending across multiple pages. This and one other copy were sometime deaccessioned from the Foreign Office Library. The library's retained copy held in the FCDO Historical Collection at King's College London is the only other example we have traced. Octavo. With folding plans of Ningbo and Zhenhai anchorages 4 folding text sheets with Ningbo harbour regulations in English and Chinese. Original buff boards brown cloth backstrip front cover lettered in black. Ex-Foreign Office Library with its date label and stamps on boards bookplate accession notation and withdrawal stamp. Alongside notices amending and repealing existing directions the volume includes the text of four newly propagated and substantial documents concerning the ports of Amoy Yingkou Newchwang Wuhu and Qingdao as well as several non-maritime orders. This copy now deaccessioned was one of at least two sent to the Foreign Office Library in August 1924 by Judge Skinner Turner 1868-1935 the chief justice of the British Supreme Court for China from 1921 to 1927 Skinner's bequest is noted on the bookplate. The library's retained copy held in the FCDO Historical Collection at King's College London is the only other example we have traced. Octavo. China Singapore the Philippines SMS Aurora at sea 1886. Oblong folio 17.9 x 40 cm. Modern quarter black morocco over blue cloth boards gold-tooled spine and a gold-tooled morocco label on the front board. With 37 sheets of sketches in pencil black ink and grey wash mounted on cards most captioned and dated. An album of striking pencil ink and wash drawings compiled on board the Austro-Hungarian corvette SMS Aurora on a tour of commercial diplomacy to China and Japan between September 1886 and April 1888. Although the artist is unknown the composition of the plates frequently incorporating a variety of scenes and combining a mixture of coastal views landmarks foreign and native settlements landscapes and historic or religious sites along with the technical skill displayed throughout the album suggests that it might originally have been intended for publication.SMS Aurora’s tour represented the first significant attempt by the Austro-Hungarian government to open commercial channels with China and Japan and as the late nineteenth-century historian Jerolim von Benko who published a record of the Aurora’s voyage in his book Die Schiffs-Station der k. und k. Kriegs-Marine in Ost-Asien: Reisen S.M. Schiffe “Nautilus” und “Aurora” 1884-1888 Vienna 1892 notes the Aurora was the first Austro-Hungarian tour to travel as far as the Yangtze River region.“The Aurora spent the years 1886-89 on a voyage to East Asia studying the feasibility of extending Austro-Hungarian shipping lines beyond their terminus at Hong Kong. The Austrian Lloyd which had been serving Singapore and Hong Kong with regularly scheduled steamers since 1880 subsequently extended its lines to Japan in 1891.” Lawrence Sondhaus The Naval Policy of Austria-Hungary 1867-1918: Navalism Industrial p. 84.The album follows the route of SMS Aurora sailing from the port of Galle in present day Sri Lanka via the Nicobar Islands and through the Straits of Malacca stopping at various locations in Malaysia and Indonesia on the way and continuing along the Indonesian islands of Jakarta Bali Zumbawa and Celebes before reaching the Moluccas. From the Moluccas the Aurora sailed north visiting various locations in the Philippines before arriving in Hong Kong in May 1887. It then sailed to the Chinese treaty ports of Shantou Swatow and Xiamen Amoy and then continued on to Japan where the Aurora stopped at Hakodate and Miyako. In October 1887 Aurora returned to China spending time at the ports of Yantai Zhifu/Chefoo and Shanghai sailing up the Yangtze River from Shanghai to the port of Zhenjiang Chenkiang near Nanjing before sailing south to the Chinese ports of Ningbo Ningpo and Fuzhou Foochow the latter having also become of particular significance as one of China’s foremost naval bases built beginning in 1867 to control increased European activity on its coasts in the second half of the nineteenth century. The artist also includes views of the homeward journey via Aden in Yemen and Suez the Suez Canal having opened in 1869.The Aurora’s tour of China was the result of increased European activity in the region following the opening of Chinese ports to European traders consequent to the Opium Wars of 1839-1842 and 1856-1860 though as can be seen from the Aurora’s progress access was limited to the ports known as treaty ports which the Qing dynasty agreed to make open to foreigners beginning with the 1842 Treaty of Nanjing. As Lawrence Sondhaus notes in his study of the naval policy of Austria-Hungary the years the Aurora spent between 1886 and 1888 studying the feasibility of extending Austro-Hungarian shipping lines beyond their terminus at Hong Kong under the command of Frigate Captain Franz Müller seemed to pay off as the Austrian Lloyd line "which had been serving Singapore and Hong Kong with regularly scheduled steamers since 1880 subsequently extended its lines to Japan in 1891" L. When the Boxer Rebellion broke out in China in 1899 motivated in large part by conservative anti-foreign anti-colonial and anti-Christian sentiment Austria-Hungary joined the military coalition the "Eight-Nation Alliance" along with Japan Russia Britain France the United States Germany and Italy which sent forces to suppress it. As a reward Austria-Hungary gained a concession zone in Tianjin in December 1902.Five plates are browned with repairs and occasional damp staining in the margins barely affecting the illustrations. The Chinese Government Gold Loan Bond Certificate.
London: Roberts & Leete 1912. Certificate number 11028 of this early Chinese government bond known as the "Gold Loan of 1912". These bonds were released to raise funds for the Republic of China a year just after the fall of the Qing Dynasty. The gold loan of 1912 for £10 million sterling was authorized by the Minister of Finance of the government of the Republic of China. The certificate states that "the Bearer of this Bond is entitled to receive from the Government of China the sum of Twenty pounds sterling with Interest thereon from the 30th day of September 1912 at the rate of five per cent. gold per annum". A total of 80 coupons were originally attached to the verso with 52 coupons having been used. The remaining 28 coupons attached and folded to the verso are "for ten shillings sterling being one half-year's interest." and numbered 53 to 80. Paper certificate 450 x 305 mm with 28 coupons attached on verso. Engraved with geometric and floral borders in blue yellow patterned engraved background Chinese government seals printed in red. A little creased mild spots to extremities one coupon attached by tape repair colours bright: a very good piece. unknown

Shanghai: The Mercury Press c.1933. Held by one institution only First edition of this lively regimental publication. The 4th raced to China in 1927 amid escalating domestic political tensions and threats to American commercial interests in Shanghai. Initially an expeditionary force it remained as a permanent garrison until the evacuation of Shanghai in 1941 completing one of the longest peacetime deployments in US military history. This was the second consecutive annual issued by the 4th Marines and contains a calendar of regimental life a sketch of its history and portraits of leading officers. Besides the copy held by the Los Angeles Public Library it is untraced. Folio. Illustrations some in colour throughout including cartoons by E. L. Wayland and photographs by A. B. Ramsay regimental photographer and G. Belkin Studio; 42 pp. advertisements at end. Original green patterned cloth over limp card covers front cover lettered and decorated in gilt pictorial endpapers.
