Photograph album showing hunting society in Britsh India.
Cambridge Mumbai New Delhi: Scott & Wilkinson Clifton & Co Hamilton Studios and Kinsey Bros. 1933. Oblong half morocco photograph album by W. Johnson & sons London. With 105 photographs mounted in the album ranging from 16 x 28 cm to 4 x 6 cm 2 photographs loosely inserted and a watercolour mounted at the back 11.5 x 21 cm. Unique photograph album showcasing the vigorous "fox" hunting scene in British India in the early 1930s particularly around Delhi. Most of the photographs show members of the British upper class in India often mounted on horses or posing for a group photograph and accompanied by hounds. The album contains no titles captions or inscriptions and the photographs do not seem to figure recurring individuals which suggests that it was probably compiled to commemorate the hunting and or riding club and its activities in the early 1930s. Numerous photographs show groups of mostly men posing with hounds at lunches and possibly a hunt ball or mounted on horses at jumping events and even a few cup trophies. The very first photograph is by Scott & Wilkinson in Cambridge active before 1933 and was therefore probably taken in England. The other inscribed photographs are by Clifton & Co. and Hamilton Studios from Bombay and Kinsey Bros. which started in New Delhi in 1935.British life in India mirrored life in native Britain and included popular equestrian activities such as hunting. Starting in the second half of the 19th century foxhounds were imported from Britain and subsequently bred in India. Regiments and brigades kept their own packs but at the beginning of the 20th century these had morphed into local hunts. Hounds were kept at over 12 hunting clubs which included Delhi Meerut Narbuda Vale Jaora Poona Bombay Bangalore Ooty Madras Lahore Quetta Peshawar and Karachi. Although the Indian silver fox was sometimes hunted the most common prey was the golden jackal.A different type of hunting popular in India was pig sticking: the chase of a wild boar on horseback with the spear. Several photographs in the album show pig sticking parties either posing or in action and sometimes accompanied by spectators on elephants. In contrast to the jackal-hunt parties the pigstick groups are composed of more military looking men and also include Indian men as opposed to the British-only hound groups.Most photographs show the area around Delhi and include a hunt near Shah Alam's Tomb. A photograph of this event is loosely inserted in the album and dated 1933/34 on the back. Other photographs show the Rashtrapati Bhavan one group shows the Earl later Marquess of Willingdon India's Governor-General from 1931 to 1936. Two images show the monumental Gateway of India completed in 1924 in Bombay Mumbai which can also be seen in an aerial photograph. Several photographs show what is probably the airfield at Karachi as it shows two airplanes loading mail on apparently the first voyage of the Indian Transcontinental Airways. Imperial Airways liner "Hanno" departing from Croydon had left for Karachi on 1 July 1933 via Bahrain and Sharjah. In Karachi the cargo was transferred to the Transcontinental airliner "Arethusa" as can be seen on the photographs.It is unclear why only half of the album was used. It is possible the compiler transferred to Kut in British Mesopotamia Kut al-Imara in modern Iraq. A watercolour on the final page of the album is captioned "A river bank north of Kut".Binding slightly rubbed and worn at the edges. Album leaves foxed throughout but most of the photographs in very good condition. The paper of the large photograph of the group near Shah Alam's Tomb is heavily damaged at the top and left side but the image itself is undamaged. His views can be found in a wide array of collections from The Getty to The Amon Carter Museum of Art.<br /> <br /> Established by miners searching for silver and gold at its height Ouray had more than 30 active mines and was home to thousands of people. Ouray’s downtown is now on the National Register of Historic Places and the town bills itself as the "Switzerland of America†for its setting at the narrow head of a valley enclosed on three and a half sides by steep mountains. unknown

Some are titled some with initials by the photographer/studio; some evidence of black-scorching to some leaves as if it survived a fire though there is no damage. A few other ephemeral items accompany the piece and seem loosely related. Original half maroon leather gilt-stamping maroon cloth sides gilt-rules a.e.g.; neatly restored with new maroon cloth and mounting original parts of the binding. Very good. An assortment of subjects contained within all seem to date from about 1890-1900. Scenes of Paris 5 Bruxelles 8 Bournemouth 3 or more New Zealand 8 Norway and Jersey/ Guernsey/ Swanage 7 or more Herne Bay and elsewhere. / Among the more interesting prints are those showing the British Channel Islands such as Jersey and the local caves the ca.1900 scenes of Bournemouth the rugged mountains of Norway 1 striking view of Switzerland Andermatt et la Furka near Uri. There is a scene of 6 women from Norway working in the mountains – nice image showing their outfits; another shows more than 50 persons all-about in front of a stone tower; one woman with her wares to sell – could be milk – her cart being pulled by a dog. / Among the photographers are Louis-Antonin Neurdein 1846-1914 possibly Pierre-Louis Pierson 1822-1913 Francis Frith & Co. Good overall. 200 original photographs of a 1925/26 trip which begins in the Philippines and includes Singapore Java Australia New Zealand and Suva with many great images of Middle Harbor in Sydney. This is followed by a railway trip across Canada from the Pacific coast and Banff cross country ending in Montreal with the last image of the Engineering building at McGill University.<br /> The album is likely an American military man's photographic record of his trip beginning in December 1925 and ending April 1926 as many of the images are of railways bridges ships and military installations and one image identifies a Captain Richardson in white Navy uniform. <br /> <br /> The album opens with images of the Philippines with rail yards captioned "H. P. Co"; Fabrica Occ. Negros; San Carlos; Fort Santiago Manila; SS "Taiping" of A-O Line; Zamboanga including a shot of "Pettit Barracks" this was the location of the US Army's 43rd Infantry Regiment which was a Philippine scout unit in 1921; Fort Pilar Zamboanga; SS 'Darvel' at Jolo; and city streets of Jolo.<br /> <br /> The next stage of the trip is the through southeast Asia and Malaysia and Indonesia with images of Sandakan North Borneo; Jesselton Soldier's Monument rubber grove; Labuan government building Naval cemetery two western men in the caption identified as "Jefferson & Watt"; Singapore Bridge government building street scene reservoir old cemetery; Johore Causeway; Fort Canning; Batavia current day Jakarta Indonesia Batavia street scenes bridge canals old Portuguese fort; near Djokjakarta; lowland locomotive; Papandajan smoking craters; Mendoet; Borodbudur temples; Prambanan temples; Surabaya; KPM SS 'Plancius' Dutch ship; Semarang steam tram; KPM SS 'Houtman'; old Fort Macassar; and Celebes canal works views of country side.<br /> <br /> On to Australia with Brisbane Victoria Bridge Sydney Harbor north & south Head Garden Island "Sydney bridge site" the future site of the Bridge Fort Dennison Spit Bridge Middle Harbor Middle Head Bradley's Head Kuringai Chase Manly and Darling Harbor.<br /> <br /> Auckland and Fiji are next with images of the RMS 'Niagara' at Auckland and views from Mt. 1893. Hardcover. A collection of 74 hand-tinted albumen post card sized photographs on paper loosely tipped into album pages. The original owners name on the inside front cover reads "E. M. Griffill or Griffin Yokohama March 12th 1902." The photographers are not identified but these are stock images measuring approx. 5 1/8 x 3 1/2". Subjects include landscapes in many towns predominantly Nikko Kyoto Nara and Osaka tea cultivation and river tea house geishas shrines etc. A sample of some titles - 746 Imaichi Road; 714 Tomb Eayasu Shogun at Nikko; Tea Garden along Tokaido Railway; P 79 Fuji from Taconoura Tokaido; Yaami Hotel Kyoto. Most of the photos are from Kyoto; 2 of tea fields 1 of afternoon tea. The M K & G Museum in Hamburg holds some of the images in a larger format and dates them as 1893. The photos have penciled captions above the images and penciled captions on the verso of the prints. <br /> <br /> Small album 8 1/4 x 6" bound with fiber covered boards tied with turquoise string. Board corners a trifle rubbed. Some images a little faint. Overall a very pleasant little album. hardcover

1910. Hardcover. Very good overall. A photograph album commemorating the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910 along with the family's photographs of a trip to Japan. The exhibition took place at White City London in Great Britain from 14 May 1910 to 29 October 1910. It was the largest international exposition that the Empire of Japan had ever participated in and was driven by a desire of Japan to develop a more favorable public image in Great Britain. <br /> <br /> The album opens with a shipboard printed telegram "The Tenyo Maru Wireless Telegram" dated May 8 1910 announcing that King Edward had died on May 6th and the English were mourning and in a state of confusion. As such the opening of the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition was "postponed for about one week. The banquet of Prince Asaka is also postponed." <br /> <br /> There follows a series of hand painted photographs approx. 6 x 2.5". There are colored postcards art postcards and approximately 30 b&w photographs of the family on their visit to Japan. The album also includes invitations 3 watercolor views a menu calling cards from Lady Semon and family place cards for Mr. & Mrs. Rutherfurd possibly the owners of the album. Mr. Rutherfurd is a massively tall and heavy fellow especially alongside the Japanese. A letter from Harishin collector of Fine Art Curios of Kobe dated April 2nd 1910 about lamps the gentleman liked. A large folding image & calligraphy on tissue with the original envelope at the back. <br /> <br /> Oblong 8vo 25 card leaves with ephemera on both sides made by F. H. Gilson Co. Boston. REAL PHOTO POSTCARD OF THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL AT WRANGELL ALASKA
The Industrial School in Wrangell Alaska pictured in this circa 1905 real photo postcard was founded in 1877 by the first Presbyterian Church in Alaska. The purpose was to teach young native men of the area known as the Tlingit various American trades such as printing boatbuilding and construction. It closed in 1907.<br /> <br /> A new Wrangell Institute boarding school was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1932 until 1975 at a site a few miles south of Wrangell. Children were forced to attend the school which for some was a traumatic experience because they were removed from their homes and families and forbidden from speaking their native language.<br /> <br /> The black-and-white card measures roughly 5 ½" x 3 ½" with a few light pencil markings on the verso. The front of the card is coated and the name of the school and location are etched in the negative. Overall in very good condition. unknown

SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND ALCATRAZ ISLAND
An albumen print of the San Francisco Bay showing Alcatraz with sailing ships in the distance. It is likely this image was taken by Carleton Watkins 1829-1916 an important Western photographer whose photographs of Yosemite significantly influenced the United States Congress' decision to preserve it as a National Park.<br /> <br /> Despite the recognition he received for his work Watkins lost his studio and thousands of images to creditors. Ultimately everything was taken over by Isaiah West Taber 1830–1912 who reprinted Watkins work without giving him credit. Watkins opened his San Francisco studio in 1871. However the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the studio gallery and negative collection ending his photographic career.<br /> <br /> This image measures 7 ½“ x 4 ¾“ and has writing in ink along the lower border which reads: “San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Islandâ€. It is mounted to a backer board and is faded along the right edge.<br /> <br /> This image was likely marketed to tourists and sold in Taber’s shop. The National Galleries of Scotland has this image in its collection. That example is printed on a Watkin’s special mount and is labeled B 844. unknown

This grouping represents 20 different Southern California camera clubs one Chicago camera club and two versions of labels for amateur photographer Al Carah a Fellow of the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs in 1955.<br /> <br /> As cameras became more accessible during the first decade of the 20th century a number of serious amateur photographers reacted to the snapshot craze by forming organizations dedicated to promoting photography as a fine art rather than as a popular pastime or commercial pursuit. Sydney 1875. Ca. 8 x 46.5 cm. Panorama photograph consisting of three albumen prints joined together with white bookcloth. A long folding panorama photograph of Sydney Harbour in the late 19th century. It prominently features the east side of Circular Quay which at the time was a commercial working wharf dominated by the wool trade. The many wool stores that were built here have since been demolished. The large wool store of Hill Clark and Co at the end of the wharf which was completed in 1883 cannot be found on the photograph which means it must have been taken in 1882 at the latest. The photograph is not signed but is reminiscent of the work of Australian photographers Charles Bayliss 1850-1897 and Francis Whitfield Robinson ca. 1819-after 1882 who made similar panorama photos of Sydney around this time.The photograph is slightly discoloured one of the bookcloth hinges is partly torn. Beautiful glossy press photograph of the Souk al-Markazi or Blue Souk in Sharjah. The impressive building was designed by British architects Michael Lyle & Partners and completed in 1978. Meant to ressemble a traditional bazaar it is one of the most iconic buildings in Sharjah and serves as the main shopping centre. The present photograph of the souk was taken in January 1980 for the Sunday edition of Associated Press News APN. It accompanied an article by Elias Antar dates unknown about the United Arab Emirates. The description by APN that would have come with the photograph when it was requested for use is included on the back.The lower right corner of the photograph is slightly creased without affecting the image. Octavo 29 pages plus a mounted albumen paper photographic frontispiece showing a grandiose structure its subsequent failure to be erected hinted at in its description on the title page as 'the proposed building'. Original blind-ruled blue cloth with the short title in gilt on the front cover; cloth a little marked and slightly rubbed at the extremities; endpapers and frontispiece mount a little foxed; title page offset; a very good copy. See Ferguson 15986 not noting this cloth-bound edition nor the frontispiece - we have previously handled a copy with a lithographic frontispiece - and not mentioning this photographically illustrated edition; see Holden 61.
