Philippines 1950. Very good. Thirty-one original photographs each measuring 4 x 5 inches. Minor wear and dust soiling. Mostly sharp clean images. Fascinating group of over thirty candid photographs depicting Philippine settlers and their homes on the large southern island of Mindanao just after World War II. Over half over these show settlers and their homes in the Panguantucan and Nabaliwa areas of Bukidnon province in the center of the island as wells as images of coffee and soybean farms a poultry enterprise rural roads and bridges and more. Additional photographs show similar scenes in Lanao del Sur also on Mindanao and a few in the Tinambac municipality of the more central Camarines Sur province -- farmers with their products by the road agricultural families at work a plant nursery and settlers' children in the fields. Mindanao is one of the principal centers of agricultural production in the Philippines and the island was subject to a series of resettlement efforts across the 20th century by both colonial and independent governments aimed at increasing production. The photos are captioned in manuscript in English on the versos and scattered images of crude roads and construction equipment suggest that these images were taken by a U.S. Army engineer or a private contractor after the war. unknown

Barnes ca. 1960. <br /><br />Oblong photo album measuring 13 1/2 x 10 inches 340 x 255 mm 12 leaves containing 8 photos each for a total of 96 photos title to front cover written in pencil metal comb binding. <br /><br />This album shows 96 color snapshots of Anthony Cina of South Jersey Bindery Thorofare New Jersey binding a book at the bindery of Richard H. Barnes in Philadelphia. Each snapshot appears within a window measuring 4 1/4 x 2 7/8 inches 103 x 73 mm. The snapshots are neatly and firmly attached. Complete; none missing. <br /><br />According to a handwritten note on the verso of the front cover Philadelphia bookbinder Richard H. Barnes took the photos at his Philadelphia shop 2341 Germantown Avenue. The note also states that the photos are from "circa 1960."<br /><br />We have not been able to find much information about Anthony Cina. However a 1966 newspaper article states: "Anthony Cina leather craftsman and bookbinder of Thorofare will give a demonstration on 'bookbinding and engraving' to graphics arts teachers" during the 48th annual convention of the New Jersey Vocational and Arts Education Association April 1 and 2 1966 at a hotel in Asbury Park. The Daily Record Long Branch New Jersey March 26 1966 page 5. <br /><br />As for Richard Barnes the Philadelphia binder published a book in 1962 "Gilding and Making of Gold Leaf." An interesting look at bookbinding featuring step-by-step photos of the binding process. Complete with no photos missing or damaged. <br /><br />CONDITION: Some soiling and rubbing to the covers slight toning to page edges. Very Good overall.</p> Barnes, Richard H.

Very Good Turkish, Ottoman (1500-1928) Original brown leather photo album including 31 large gelatin silver photographs. Album size: 23x31 cm. Photo sizes: 16,5x22,5 cm. No captions. Each photo is mounted on album leaves and separated with tissue guards. Historically significant photo album including attractive photographs showing the process of the construction and launchings of the first two Turkish submarines at the Fijenoord Shipyard in Rotterdam, by German and Turkish engineers, under the secret project "NV Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw (i.e. Engineer-office for Shipbuilding) which was a Dutch dummy company set up in The Hague and funded by the Reichsmarine after World War I in order to maintain and develop German submarine know-how and to circumvent the limitations set by the Treaty of Versailles in 1919. IvS first designed two submarines based on the World War I UB III of the Kaiserliche Marine. Both were built by the Fijenoord shipyard in Rotterdam in 1927 and sold to Turkey, which named them TCG Birinci Inönü and Ikinci Inönü. Photos show the Turkish and German commissions of engineers including Ata[ullah] Nutku who is the first Turkish shipbuilder and designer as well as the process of construction of these two Turkish submarines and launching at the Fijenoord Shipyard. The first two submarines built during the Republic era were U-Boats designed based on the UB-III class, one of the German submarine classes of the First World War era, ordered in 1925, received in 1928, and built at the Fijenoord shipyard in the Netherlands. NV Ingenieurskantoor voor Scheepsbouw (Dutch: engineer-office for shipbuilding) designed several submarine types for paying countries, including the Soviet S-class submarine, as well as the prototypes for the German Type II submarines and Type VII submarines. The company was a joint venture by the German shipyards AG Vulcan Stettin (located in Stettin and Hamburg), the Krupp-owned Germaniawerft in Kiel, and AG Weser in Bremen. Design work was carried out at the facilities of these companies in Germany. At the time of IvS, the Germans were bound by the Treaty of Versailles, signed in 1919. This treaty, among other terms, demanded that all German U-boats be destroyed or given to other nations. Thus the Reichsmarine was left without a submarine capability, and IvS was created to work around these restrictions. The work of the company was a major factor in the foundation of the Kriegsmarine of World War II. The first designed two U-Boats TCG Birinci Inönü and Ikinci Inönü were followed by the Submarino E-1 built-in 1930 by the Echevarrieta y Larrinaga shipyard in Cádiz, Spain, initially for the Spanish Navy, but mainly as a prototype of the German Type I submarine. However, the Spanish lost interest in the E-1, and it was also sold to Turkey in 1935 as the TCG Gür.

Rare and attractive photo album titled "Cantieri del Tirreno Genova & Riva Trigoso" [i.e. Shipyards of the Tyrrhenian Sea Genoa and Riva Trigoso] including attractive six large-size silver gelatin photographs on six album leaves showing the process of the launchings and floatings of the Zafer destroyer in Tinaztepe class built under the 1929 programme in Fascist Italy, designed on the base of Italian destroyer Folgore, which were purchased while being built for the Italian Navy. Photos show the splendid process of the launching of this Turkish destroyer on the eve of WW II. The captions: 1.,2. Destroyer "Zafer" launching. 3. Destroyer "Zafer" floating and launching. 4. Destroyer "Zafer" completely finished in Genoa Harbour. 5. Destroyer "Zafer" floating after launching. 6. Destroyer "Zafer" completely finished in Genoa Harbour. The accompanying crowd is seen in some photos while the Turkish-flagged ship is being launched. The Tinaztepe and the Zafer were built at the Riva shipyard in Trigoso in addition to the Kocatepe. They were inspired directly by Freccia's plans, but their chimney ducts emerged separately. They could also anchor mines and had a less active career, apart from a few sorties in 1945 in a Mediterranean furrowed by Allied ships. They were scrapped in 1957.

Two photo books with forty-four photographs extremely well identified with detailed captions containing the geological characteristics of the wide variety of locations and with the numbers of Gilbert's negatives clearly listed. It could be that these images appeared or were intended to appear in USGS publications.<br /> <br /> The Geological Society of America GSA was founded in 1888. The aim of the GSA is to support the professional growth of geoscientists and encourage cooperative research among earth life planetary and social scientists foster public dialogue on geoscience issues and promote the geosciences in the service of humankind.<br /> <br /> James Furman Kemp 1859-1926 was mostly known for his work in igneous petrology and on the origin of ore deposits. He served as the President of the Geological Society of America in 1921. Charles Doolittle Walcott 1850-1927 was the third director of the U.S. Geological Survey the fourth Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution and a contributor to the "Bulletin of the Geological Society of America."<br /> <br /> The lion's share of the photographs are reproduced from the negatives of U.S. explorer geographer and geologist Grove Karl Gilbert 1843-1918 whose life spanned an age of heroic geology and who was one of the founders of modern geomorphology the study of landforms. He helped launch the U.S. Geological Survey USGS and was its chief geologist under the famed explorer and second USGS director John Wesley Powell. In addition Gilbert was a founding member of the National Geographic Society as well as president twice of the Geological Society of America. Gilbert was first exposed to the American West when he participated in the Wheeler Survey one of the four great surveys of the American West headed by George Wheeler Clarence King Ferdinand Vandeveer Hayden and Powell. Gilbert's monumental works were "Report on the Geology of the Henry Mountains" 1877 and "Lake Bonneville - Department of the Interior Monographs of the United States Geological Survey Volume 1" 1890.
