REAL PHOTO POSTCARD OF THE INDUSTRIAL SCHOOL AT WRANGELL ALASKA
The Industrial School in Wrangell Alaska pictured in this circa 1905 real photo postcard was founded in 1877 by the first Presbyterian Church in Alaska. The purpose was to teach young native men of the area known as the Tlingit various American trades such as printing boatbuilding and construction. It closed in 1907.

A new Wrangell Institute boarding school was operated by the Bureau of Indian Affairs from 1932 until 1975 at a site a few miles south of Wrangell. Children were forced to attend the school which for some was a traumatic experience because they were removed from their homes and families and forbidden from speaking their native language.

The black-and-white card measures roughly 5 ½" x 3 ½" with a few light pencil markings on the verso. The front of the card is coated and the name of the school and location are etched in the negative. Overall in very good condition. unknown

[Photography] [San Francisco]
SAN FRANCISCO BAY AND ALCATRAZ ISLAND
An albumen print of the San Francisco Bay showing Alcatraz with sailing ships in the distance. It is likely this image was taken by Carleton Watkins 1829-1916 an important Western photographer whose photographs of Yosemite significantly influenced the United States Congress' decision to preserve it as a National Park.

Despite the recognition he received for his work Watkins lost his studio and thousands of images to creditors. Ultimately everything was taken over by Isaiah West Taber 1830–1912 who reprinted Watkins work without giving him credit. Watkins opened his San Francisco studio in 1871. However the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the studio gallery and negative collection ending his photographic career.

This image measures 7 ½“ x 4 ¾“ and has writing in ink along the lower border which reads: “San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Islandâ€. It is mounted to a backer board and is faded along the right edge.

This image was likely marketed to tourists and sold in Taber’s shop. The National Galleries of Scotland has this image in its collection. That example is printed on a Watkin’s special mount and is labeled B 844. unknown

SIX SEPIA-TONED PHOTOGRAPHIC PORTRAITS OF INUIT PEOPLE IN ALASKA SHOT BY BEVERLY BENNETT DOBBS
Dobbs 1868-1937 grew up in Bellingham Washington and operated a photography studio for 12 years before marrying and moving in 1896 to Nome Alaska in search of gold. He continued to earn his living as a photographer capturing scenes in Nome and the Seward Peninsula along with portraits of the indigenous people. He was awarded a gold medal at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition St. Louis World's Fair in 1904 for his portraits. By about 1909 Dobbs was among the first to use motion picture film north of the Arctic Circle. He made a name for himself with Atop of the World in Motion also called Top of the World in Motion a collection of his motion picture travelogues detailing the Alaska gold rush.

No names or other information is provided about the people Dobbs photographed. Etched into the plate appearing in most of the photographs is "Nome" and Dobbs' name sometimes shown as BB Dobbs and occasionally with a date and copyright.

A collection of Dobbs photographs was recently acquired by the Bodleian Library in Oxford. Richard Ovenden head of the Bodleian Libraries said "The portraits are remarkable for their intimacy" and provide a record of a "moment of encounter and exchange" between "the international community of prospectors and the Inuit communities who had lived in peace for thousands of years".

Each of the photographs is printed in sepia-tone on lightly textured matte paper:

Inuit man Dobbs Nome no date 6 6/16" x 8 5/16"
Few tiny dust spots with a small scuff and light edgewear; remnants of paper on the verso

Inuit woman with child in backpack Dobbs Nome no date 7 6/8" x 10 7/8"
Few small dust spots; remnants of paper on the verso

Group of four Inuit woman BB Dobbs no location 1903 10" x 7 ¾"
Small dust spots; remnants of paper on the verso

Inuit man BB Dobbs no location 1903 7 ½" x 9 ½"
Few small dust spots light moisture stains; remnants of paper on the verso

Inuit woman with child in backpack BB Dobbs no location 1903 7 x 9 5/8"
Remnants of paper on the verso

Inuit child Dobbs Nome no date 7 1/8" x 9 6/8"
Few small dust spots; remnants of paper on the verso

The photographs are from the estate of Pierre Odier 1940-2021 author educator and lecturer who traveled to remote places in order to document indigenous peoples. [PHOTOGRAPHY] FITZGIBBON, J. H. (editor)
THE ST. LOUIS PRACTICAL PHOTOGRAPHER
St. Louis: Published from 116 North Fourth Street 1877. First Edition. Hardcover. Front cover now detached and the spine largely lacking but the text block is tight and the book can be easily rebacked. Despite the defects Very Good and quite scarce. The first twelve issues of this scarce western photography monthly edited by J. H. Fitzgibbon one of America's finest daguerreotypists and well-known for his portraits of Native Americans. Bound in contemporary half morocco with the original front and rear wrappers for all issues as well as the ads bound in. Illustrated with 10 original photographs mostly mounted albumens including a portrait of Fitzgibbon by Bogardus an Adirondacks landscape by Stoddard and various posed studies. One image the Great Steel Bridge of St. Louis is printed directly on the paper; another is a chromotype of the Chicago Apollo Musical Club by Gentile. There is no image with the sixth issue nor is one listed in the contents. The albertype by E. Bierstadt for the eleventh issue is lacking as is a ferrotype specimen holder in one of the ads. The articles are informative and instructional covering both news and many different technical aspects of photography at the time with much longing for a return to the daguerreotype and a number of articles on new processes such as the Lambertype. This copy is INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the editor to T. S. Lambert in January of 1878 on the inside front cover. Theodore Sarony T. S. Lambert was no relation to the creator of the Lambertype Claude Lambert but he did team up with Claude to sell exclusive license for the Lambertype process.

Published from 116 North Fourth Street hardcover

New York: Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine 1970. First Edition. First printing. Small quarto 21cm x 23cm; gray paper-covered boards hardcover; dustjacket; 157pp unpaginated; illus. Fine in the fragile printed mylar dustwrapper complete but slightly rubbed and scratched; Very Good.

Somewhat uncommon cloth edition of this experimental pastiche of Carpenter's aphoristic writings and Heyman's documentary photographs. Heyman b. 1930 is perhaps best known as Margaret Mead's long-time collaborator and co-author with her of the books Family and World Enough. Carpenter was a pioneer in the field of visual anthropology and a frequent collaborator with Marshall McLuhan to whose work the current volume clearly owes a debt. An easy book to find in softcover but the cloth edition is elusive especially in the absurdly fragile mylar dustwrapper. Outerbridge & Dienstfrey / Ballantine unknown

Tintype of Two Men Seated circa 1875-1880
American 1860. 3 ½ x 2 ¼ inches uncased. A striking image featured on p. 79 of David Deitcher’s Dear Friends: Photographs of Men Together 1840-1918. Images of men together from the nineteenth century do not necessarily suggest a sexual relationship as Deitcher explains in his book but rather a show of intimacy within the very separated realms of the sexes. [Photography]: [Trade Catalogues]: [Toys]. Cascelloid / Palitoy
Toy Catalogue of the Cascelloid / Palitoy Co. with Photographic Prints
Leicester UK: Cascelloid 1930. Very good . Beautifully-produced trade catalogue from the Cascelloid "Palitoy" company displaying a wide range of baby dolls and other toys. Several uncomfortable designs of black children with pitch-dark skin date this catalogue at roughly the 1930s when the Cascelloid company was dubbed the "House of Constant Progress" by the industry press for its material innovations with the plastics Bexoid and Plastex. One page features a celluoid model by the noted designer Mary Lucie Attwell a doll named "Diddums." The catalogue also displays the company's offerings of animal dolls die-cast trucks pool toys golf and ping-pong sets rattles pinwheels and more. Needless to say color photography was not the norm at this time and this catalogue comprises a beautiful set of vivid and sharp photographic prints. A truly exceptional example unlike anything we've seen: simultaneously surreal and nostalgic. Oblong 4to. album. Blue leather-covered boards. Contains 29 color photographs all 9" by 6.5" approx. mounted on rectos one each of light-gray cardboard leaves. About very good plus overall. Moderate rubbing and edgewear to boards. Several pages display mild soiling and offsetting from photos. Prints just a bit yellowed but remain sharp vivid and clean. [Cascelloid] hardcover

Two Bedouins hunting with birds of prey.
1880. Tipped onto a stiff paper mount ca. 40 x 30 cm. Kept in a clear plastic sleeve. One albumen print ca. 22 x 27.5 cm. Striking large photograph of two Bedouins on horseback carrying large birds of prey for hunting. Bedouins have a long history of falconry as it was difficult for them to catch live prey in the desert otherwise. They typically captured the falcons trained them for a few months then released them back into the wild before breeding season. This tradition no longer exists in this manner as hunting is now forbidden throughout most of the Arabian Peninsula. As such the present photograph offers a unique insight into 19th-century falconry in the Arabian Desert. The edges are somewhat discoloured and the corners are creased from a past mounting method. Otherwise in very good condition. ABE CAT Falconry & Hunting ABE CAT Middle East Arabian Peninsula unknown
