Photographer has titled dated and signed on verso of matting: "McHenry Illinois. Oct.1965. Danny Lyon." Photograph shows some trivial wear to extremities a diagonal crease to upper right corner and faint spidering across center; Very Good. Mild toning to mat board with some scattered foxing and a few faint stains. An outtake from Lyon's 1968 debut The Bikeriders his attempt at recording and glorifying American motorcycle culture. "McHenry Illinois" depicts a member of the Chicago Outlaws motorcycle club of Cicero Illinois mounting his girlfriend in a field of grass and wildflowers. Lyon lived and traveled with the Outlaws between 1963-1967 becoming a member of the club and immersing himself in all aspects of their activities. With one laid-in slip translating the first appearance of Henry Miller's first of three contributions into French. 4to bound in stiff paper with integrated printed paper and glassine wrapper. 156 3 pp. A very nice copy well preserved for this delicately produced item the pages are sturdy and fresh bumped in the upper outside corner the wrapper attractive with a little wear at the edges and corners the glassine a bit more worn at the extremities. LIMITED EDITION SEVENTY-FIVE STUNNING PHOTOGRAPHS OF PARIS EACH WITH A BRIEF TEXTS BY NOTEWORTHY WRITERS OR ARTISTS. Bidermanas was a Lithuanian-born Jewish photographer who worked primarily in France and is now best remembered for his rich black and white photographs of the City of Light. Forty-five people have provided brief captioning texts for these photographs including three by Henry Miller which are the only three printed in English. ‎Approx. 8" x 10" Arizona Mary was the only woman engaged in ox teaming at the time. She can be seen in the foreground at the right. The 8" x 10" photographs are uncommon. The original glass negatives are at the University of Southern California C.C. Pierce 1861-1946 took the original images. While he is best known for his photography in California in the first decades of the 20th century these three photographs show he was able to do very nice work in the rugged sections of Arizona in the 1890's. unknown‎

‎Cambridge Mumbai New Delhi: Scott & Wilkinson Clifton & Co Hamilton Studios and Kinsey Bros. 1933. Oblong half morocco photograph album by W. Johnson & sons London. With 105 photographs mounted in the album ranging from 16 x 28 cm to 4 x 6 cm 2 photographs loosely inserted and a watercolour mounted at the back 11.5 x 21 cm. Unique photograph album showcasing the vigorous "fox" hunting scene in British India in the early 1930s particularly around Delhi. Most of the photographs show members of the British upper class in India often mounted on horses or posing for a group photograph and accompanied by hounds. The album contains no titles captions or inscriptions and the photographs do not seem to figure recurring individuals which suggests that it was probably compiled to commemorate the hunting and or riding club and its activities in the early 1930s. Numerous photographs show groups of mostly men posing with hounds at lunches and possibly a hunt ball or mounted on horses at jumping events and even a few cup trophies. The very first photograph is by Scott & Wilkinson in Cambridge active before 1933 and was therefore probably taken in England. The other inscribed photographs are by Clifton & Co. and Hamilton Studios from Bombay and Kinsey Bros. which started in New Delhi in 1935.British life in India mirrored life in native Britain and included popular equestrian activities such as hunting. Starting in the second half of the 19th century foxhounds were imported from Britain and subsequently bred in India. Regiments and brigades kept their own packs but at the beginning of the 20th century these had morphed into local hunts. Hounds were kept at over 12 hunting clubs which included Delhi Meerut Narbuda Vale Jaora Poona Bombay Bangalore Ooty Madras Lahore Quetta Peshawar and Karachi. Although the Indian silver fox was sometimes hunted the most common prey was the golden jackal.A different type of hunting popular in India was pig sticking: the chase of a wild boar on horseback with the spear. Several photographs in the album show pig sticking parties either posing or in action and sometimes accompanied by spectators on elephants. In contrast to the jackal-hunt parties the pigstick groups are composed of more military looking men and also include Indian men as opposed to the British-only hound groups.Most photographs show the area around Delhi and include a hunt near Shah Alam's Tomb. A photograph of this event is loosely inserted in the album and dated 1933/34 on the back. Other photographs show the Rashtrapati Bhavan one group shows the Earl later Marquess of Willingdon India's Governor-General from 1931 to 1936. Two images show the monumental Gateway of India completed in 1924 in Bombay Mumbai which can also be seen in an aerial photograph. Several photographs show what is probably the airfield at Karachi as it shows two airplanes loading mail on apparently the first voyage of the Indian Transcontinental Airways. Imperial Airways liner "Hanno" departing from Croydon had left for Karachi on 1 July 1933 via Bahrain and Sharjah. In Karachi the cargo was transferred to the Transcontinental airliner "Arethusa" as can be seen on the photographs.It is unclear why only half of the album was used. It is possible the compiler transferred to Kut in British Mesopotamia Kut al-Imara in modern Iraq. A watercolour on the final page of the album is captioned "A river bank north of Kut".Binding slightly rubbed and worn at the edges. Album leaves foxed throughout but most of the photographs in very good condition. The paper of the large photograph of the group near Shah Alam's Tomb is heavily damaged at the top and left side but the image itself is undamaged. A unique collection of British-Indian hunting photographs in very good condition.l Cf. Original half maroon leather gilt-stamping maroon cloth sides gilt-rules a.e.g.; neatly restored with new maroon cloth and mounting original parts of the binding. Very good. An assortment of subjects contained within all seem to date from about 1890-1900. This is followed by a railway trip across Canada from the Pacific coast and Banff cross country ending in Montreal with the last image of the Engineering building at McGill University.<br /> The album is likely an American military man's photographic record of his trip beginning in December 1925 and ending April 1926 as many of the images are of railways bridges ships and military installations and one image identifies a Captain Richardson in white Navy uniform. <br /> <br /> The album opens with images of the Philippines with rail yards captioned "H. P. Co"; Fabrica Occ. ‎1910. Hardcover. Very good overall. A photograph album commemorating the Japan-British Exhibition of 1910 along with the family's photographs of a trip to Japan. The exhibition took place at White City London in Great Britain from 14 May 1910 to 29 October 1910. It was the largest international exposition that the Empire of Japan had ever participated in and was driven by a desire of Japan to develop a more favorable public image in Great Britain. <br /> <br /> The album opens with a shipboard printed telegram "The Tenyo Maru Wireless Telegram" dated May 8 1910 announcing that King Edward had died on May 6th and the English were mourning and in a state of confusion. As such the opening of the Anglo-Japanese Exhibition was "postponed for about one week. The banquet of Prince Asaka is also postponed." <br /> <br /> There follows a series of hand painted photographs approx. 6 x 2.5". There are colored postcards art postcards and approximately 30 b&w photographs of the family on their visit to Japan. The album also includes invitations 3 watercolor views a menu calling cards from Lady Semon and family place cards for Mr. & Mrs. Rutherfurd possibly the owners of the album. Mr. Rutherfurd is a massively tall and heavy fellow especially alongside the Japanese. A letter from Harishin collector of Fine Art Curios of Kobe dated April 2nd 1910 about lamps the gentleman liked. ‎An albumen print of the San Francisco Bay showing Alcatraz with sailing ships in the distance. It is likely this image was taken by Carleton Watkins 1829-1916 an important Western photographer whose photographs of Yosemite significantly influenced the United States Congress' decision to preserve it as a National Park.<br /> <br /> Despite the recognition he received for his work Watkins lost his studio and thousands of images to creditors. Ultimately everything was taken over by Isaiah West Taber 1830–1912 who reprinted Watkins work without giving him credit. Watkins opened his San Francisco studio in 1871. However the 1906 San Francisco earthquake destroyed the studio gallery and negative collection ending his photographic career.<br /> <br /> This image measures 7 ½“ x 4 ¾“ and has writing in ink along the lower border which reads: “San Francisco Bay and Alcatraz Islandâ€. It is mounted to a backer board and is faded along the right edge.<br /> <br /> This image was likely marketed to tourists and sold in Taber’s shop. The National Galleries of Scotland has this image in its collection. That example is printed on a Watkin’s special mount and is labeled B 844. unknown‎

‎SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA CAMERA CLUB LABELS‎

‎Unique collection of labels representing a variety of camera clubs in Southern California during their heyday from the 1930s through the ‘50s. This grouping represents 20 different Southern California camera clubs one Chicago camera club and two versions of labels for amateur photographer Al Carah a Fellow of the Southern California Council of Camera Clubs in 1955.<br /> <br /> As cameras became more accessible during the first decade of the 20th century a number of serious amateur photographers reacted to the snapshot craze by forming organizations dedicated to promoting photography as a fine art rather than as a popular pastime or commercial pursuit.
