Die Deutschen è un reportage che Burri realizzò tra il 1957 e il 1964 come membro della Magnum Photos, pubblicato prima in Svizzera e Francia, e successivamente in Germania, con testi e poesie di Hans Magnus Enzensberger. Si tratta di immagini quanto mai significative, che percorrono la vita quotidiana di una nazione divisa, ai tempi della guerra fredda. Si direbbe che l'intenzione di Burri è quella di cogliere esattamente il tempo, il momento: ragazzi che salutano un carrarmato americano, due persone cieche che procedono sul marciapiede, gli innamorati sull'autoscontro, due che mangiano il gelato, un fumatore per la strada e così via. Ma la costruzione nitida, l'attenta gestione del gioco della luce, la presenza, in definitiva, di una strutturalità calcolata esprime con chiarezza l'intenzione di realizzare precise icone di un tempo, di un momento storico che, per naturale rimando, fa rimbalzare il pensiero dello spettatore ad una attualità certo ancora fortemente problematica.
