We have not been able to find any copies of this photograph in any of the international public collections. Gustave Doré y pose le bras reposé sur une chaise à frange, la même que celle des portraits de Théophile Gautier, Edouard Manet ou encore Alexandre Dumas. Annotation manuscrite au dos. Meneghetti vive a ridosso del mondo dell’arte e del suo ‘sistema’ dosando puntualmente con discrezione le forme e i tempi della sua presenza pubblica. Questo modo di sottrarsi e di essere presente riassume il senso poetico di chi ama guardare ben oltre il basso profilo della attuale decadenza, con una posizione tutt'altro che cinica, perché ricca di vita e di speranza fin dentro la linea della “non speranza”. Ed è l’originalità di un simile sguardo, così isolato e così comunicante, a indicarci la presenza rara e preziosa di un autentico stile. Il volume è dedicato a uno dei momenti creativi più interessanti e originali della carriera di Renato Meneghetti: le Radiografie. Iniziato a partire dagli anni Ottanta, quello delle Radiografie è il ciclo dei cicli, perché di ogni ciclo riassume le conquiste e le usa come mattoni per erigere la base di una torre più alta. Tuttavia le Radiografie non sono semplicemente la somma di ciò che le ha precedute: sono imparagonabilmente di più. L'arte di Meneghetti sino al 1981 ha la dignità di molta pittura italiana di avanguardia: è ben fatta, curiosa e interessante, ma non ha nulla che la proietti sopra questa dimensione di aurea mediocritas. Improvvisamente, però, essa fa un balzo di sensibilità, allunga le proprie antenne fin dentro la morte, per osservarla con occhi lucidi. La fissa e, diremmo, la fotografa. La morte, come la vita, si trova dentro un corpo, tutto si realizza in quella gabbia di carne sostenuta dalle ossa… Meneghetti scopre che la lastra radiografica può ritrarlo come non si è mai visto, può portarlo fuori da se stesso e permettergli una indagine dentro all'altro illimitato universo: non più quello che si apre innanzi ai nostri occhi, non già quello che si stende nella mente dell'uomo. Meneghetti riporta sulla tela pigmentata l'immagine della lastra e illumina od oscura le parti mutando la stesura dei colori con l'alcool. Composte di pochissime linee, confermate da un cromatismo estremamente ridotto eppure ricco sino all'estetismo, le Radiografie portano l'attenzione sul corpo, senza dubbio il tema che ha più impegnato l'arte in questo scorcio di secolo, da Louise Bourgeois a Lucian Freud. Meneghetti usa i nuovi mezzi e ci mette di fronte al problema della salute, ossia della mutazione del nostro corpo di fronte alla malattia e di fronte a una medicina che ci considera sempre più delle cavie, non si sa bene a quale fine. Meneghetti tuttavia non è solo ‘attuale'. Rimbomba nelle cavità oscure di questi suoi corpi il riso della morte, in questa corsa che - nonostante tutte le ‘pecore dolly' dell'Universo - grazie a Dio siamo destinati a perdere. Oltre, infatti, si apre una Luce, di cui la pittura può essere il sommo presagio. (Ludovico Maria Ragghianti) Renato Meneghetti (1947), dopo i primi interventi presentati negli anni Sessanta da amici e artisti come Munari, de Chirico, Fontana e una serie di concorsi ed esposizioni giovanili, ha interrotto ogni rapporto con il "sistema dell'arte", ha riacquistato pressoché tutti i suoi lavori e non presta opere se non a istituzioni pubbliche e a musei. Predilige la pittura, non ama esibirla. This volume deals with one of the most original and most interesting creative moments in Renato Meneghetti's career: the Radiografie (x-rays). Beginning in the eighties the cycle of Radiografie is the cycle of cycles, because the conquests of each cycle are resumed and become the building blocks of a tower that becomes taller and taller. Nevertheless the Radiografie are not simply a sum total of what has gone before: they are more, incomparably more. Up to 1981 Meneghetti's art possessed that dignity which was common to much Italian Avant-garde painting: it was well executed, curious and interesting, but nothing more to place it above a state of aurea mediocritas. Suddenly, however, there was a break-through in artistic sensitivity, his artistic antennae extended, homed in on death, observed it lucidly. Sharply focused, we could say, he photographed it. Death, like life, is to be found within the body; everything is accomplished within that cage of flesh sustained by bone Meneghetti discovered that the x-ray plate could portray himself as he had never seen before, could take him outside of himself and allow him to investigate inside that other limitless universe: no longer the universe that lies before our eyes, no longer the universe that unfolds in the human mind. Meneghetti transports the x-rayed image onto the coloured canvass. He illuminates or shrouds parts changing the texture of its colours with alcohol. Composed of but a few lines, supported by extremely reduced chromaticity or richly coloured to the point of aestheticism, these Radiografie place their stress on the body, beyond a doubt the most engaging theme of the last century's closing years from Louise Bourgeois to Lucian Freud. Meneghetti uses new means and places us before the issue of health: the mutations of our bodies through disease and through medical science that has gradually come to consider us as guinea pigs; it is not clear to what end. Meneghetti, however, is far from being merely topical': Death's smile echos within the dark cavities of these bodies, in this race that despite all the test-tube sheep of the universe thanks be to God, we are destined to lose. Indeed beyond there is a light of which painting can be the supreme prophesy. TEXT IN FRENCH A photographic tribute to traditional and popular musicians in sub-saharan Africa with original field recordings on two included CDs. A very early multi-media photo project Houn-Noukoun started out with the idea that a photobook about african musicians is not complete without the music. Thus Thomas Dorn traveled 19 sub-saharaan african countries with his Nikons and a DAT-recorder with a stereo microphone. Approaching the continent through a positive subject like music led to more than 300 encounters in 2 years of traveling going only back to Paris once and a while for developing his rolls of Kodak Tri-X and doing rushprints. Paris being the capital of african music in the early nineties is until today a great place to network for such a project allowing to touch down often in musicians families and meeting artists on tour in Africa. The project benefitted from funds through foreign ministries Germany and France Kodak European Union e. a. to enable the publication. Printing of the book was done in a then hardly used technique Agfa Kristallraster in 5-tone the closest way of reproducing a photographic print. In close collaboration with Ayoko Mensah for concept and texts designed by Kris Cheung the book was first published by Florent Massot in Paris 1996 and one year later by Ilija Trojanow in his Marino Verlag München. 23 eminent African writers contributed unpublished texts and the book is closed with a selection of essays by ethno-musicologists encountered during the travels. Including 2 CDs with rare original recordings Houn-Noukoun is a homage to the continent and its people but also to classic black&white african photography.
