Paris: Florent-Massot 1996. A large oblong format volume which has cracking to front hinge a small mark to front endpaper and to closed edges. Internally very clean and unmarked. Dustjcket has age darkening. 217 pages. ORIGINAL CD'S INCLUDED. TEXT IN FRENCH A photographic tribute to traditional and popular musicians in sub-saharan Africa with original field recordings on two included CDs. A very early multi-media photo project Houn-Noukoun started out with the idea that a photobook about african musicians is not complete without the music. Thus Thomas Dorn traveled 19 sub-saharaan african countries with his Nikons and a DAT-recorder with a stereo microphone. Approaching the continent through a positive subject like music led to more than 300 encounters in 2 years of traveling going only back to Paris once and a while for developing his rolls of Kodak Tri-X and doing rushprints. Paris being the capital of african music in the early nineties is until today a great place to network for such a project allowing to touch down often in musicians families and meeting artists on tour in Africa. The project benefitted from funds through foreign ministries Germany and France Kodak European Union e. a. to enable the publication. Printing of the book was done in a then hardly used technique Agfa Kristallraster in 5-tone the closest way of reproducing a photographic print. In close collaboration with Ayoko Mensah for concept and texts designed by Kris Cheung the book was first published by Florent Massot in Paris 1996 and one year later by Ilija Trojanow in his Marino Verlag München. 23 eminent African writers contributed unpublished texts and the book is closed with a selection of essays by ethno-musicologists encountered during the travels. Including 2 CDs with rare original recordings Houn-Noukoun is a homage to the continent and its people but also to classic black&white african photography. Stampa fotografica vintage. CON DEDICA Lunga didascalia autografa firmata dell’artista recto: rarissima firmata dall’artista. Segno di doppia piega all’angolo basso di sinistra, per il resto in ottime condizioni. Proveniente dall’archivio del futurista B.G. Sanzin. Bello scatto della sala, nel formato grande, particolarmente raro. La sala quarta alla Mostra della Rivoluzione fascista «dedicata all’Agricoltura, ai Trasporti marittimi ed aerei, ai Trasporti terrestri, alla Navigazione interna, ecc., è stata ideata e realizzata dal pittore Gerardo Dottori, che ha cercato di inquadrare i dati statistici in una rappresentazione sintetica decorativa [...]. Per ciò che riguarda il concetto architettonico della Sala, l’artista si è preoccupato, date le limitate dimensioni, di non invaderla troppo di volumi, che ha cercato di ottenere, più che con rilievi, con giochi di chiaroscuro e aerando l’ambiente mediante un sereno ricorrere di colori sulle pareti» (dalla scheda relativa nel catalogo della mostra, che riproduce il presente scatto a pagina 250).
