Un libro dedicato alla pratica della fotografia contiene, solitamente, un'infinità di nozioni accademiche e tralascia la parte fondamentale della forza espressiva e comunicativa di un'immagine: la sua anima. Questo volume si propone di coprire, almeno in parte, questa mancanza: nel trattamento dei vari temi proposti, l'autore mette al centro del suo lavoro la capacità di guardare, conoscere, previsualizzare lo scatto ben prima di impugnare una fotocamera. Questo aspetto acquista massima importanza nell'ambito della fotografia documentaria, il fotoreportage, in cui la necessità di essere osservatori imparziali e anonimi, invisibili come sottolinea l'autore, non è un aspetto complementare ma il fulcro attorno al quale ruota tutto il lavoro del fotografo. Non un libro di tecnica, quindi, ma di esperienze maturate sul campo, senza troppa teoria e con molti esempi fotografici per capire come far parlare le immagini, utile a chiunque desideri imparare a guardare con lo scopo di catturare, in un fotogramma, frammenti di realtà.
