‎5 tirages d'après le procédé Taupenot (négatif sur plaques de verre sèches au collodion albuminé), respectivement 243 x 314, 245 x 304, 234 x 311, 251 x 316, et 238 x 310 mm, contrecollé sur support carton (537 x 428 mm), tampon à sec au monogramme « AD » au bas du support. La première moitié du XIXe siècle avait vu naître et croître la vogue des Pyrénées et se multiplier les images popularisant les sites les plus connus. Avec les premiers albums de photographies, Vigier, Stewart et Blanquart-Évrard avaient pris le relais des peintres et des lithographes. À leur suite, Maxwell Lyte surtout, mais aussi, Mailand, Davanne et d'autres encore, chargeant chambres noires et plaques sensibles sur des chevaux ou des mules, arpentèrent, de Saint-Jean-de-Luz à Saint-Béat, la partie occidentale de la chaîne : forts en ruine et ponts vertigineux, cascades écumantes et lacs profonds, chapelles romanes ou bains à la mode, aucun des lieux de référence de l'époque romantique ne devait leur échapper. Ainsi, du 1er mai au 31 août 1861, Alphonse Davanne présente lors de la quatrième exposition de la Société Française de Photographies, dont il est l'un des fondateurs en 1854, 8 vues des Pyrénées dont les 5 présentes et : « Saint-Sauveur », le « Pont de Betharram », le « Château de Pau ». Davanne s'avère plus praticien qu'artiste, évitant cependant les cadrages classiques. Le travail montré témoigne une sûreté de goût dans le choix de l'endroit, une attention à la venue des détails, un soin extrême dans le tirage des épreuves. Ancien avocat, photographe et chimiste, Davanne (1824-1912) s'intéressa particulièrement à la chimie de l'image photographique, travaillant seul ou en collaboration avec les chimistes Barreswill et Girard, l'opticien Lerebours, l'imprimeur Lemercier. Il conçut également une chambre noire à soufflet (1855), ainsi qu'un appareil portatif de voyage (1859). À partir de 1872, il enseigna la photographie à l'École des ponts et chaussées, puis à la Sorbonne, dès 1879. Il fut président de la Société française de photographie de 1876 à 1901. Il utilisa toutes les techniques connues à l'époque et envoya des vues de France, d'Allemage, d'Italie et d'Algérie à de nombreuses expositions en France et à l'étranger. Il fut un zélateur infatigable de la photographie 1. Les épreuves pyrénéennes de Davanne sont particulièrement rares. Elles sont ici superbes, bien contrastées. On notera, chose singulière, que le pont d'Espagne est tiré depuis une plaque cassée ! Tonalité : 9-10/10. 1 Pyrénées en images. De l'oeil à l'objectif, 1820-1860, Paris/Pau, RMN/Musée national du château de Pau, 1995, pp. 25, 27, 84, 90. Léger pâlissement sur les bords, une fine mouillure marginale claire notamment au bas des Bains du Petit-Saint-Sauveur et du Pont du Scia.‎
