Sepiatone print on old stock a 3/4-length studio portrait of Colonel Simmons wearing a dark suit and vest high white collar with silk bowtie watch chain with pendant large ring on his left hand holding his spectacles. Image size 13" x 10"; overall 17" x 14". Margins toned; dust soiling on verso. Creases seen here were exaggerated by lighting and are barely discernible on the original. "Roscoe Conkling Simmons born 1878 or 1881 died 1951 was an African-American orator civic leader journalist and politician. He was graduated from Tuskegee Institute in 1899. He served as head of the Colored Division of the Speakers' Bureau of the Republican National Committee in 1920 1924 and 1928. He was an advisor to three American presidents. He worked for the Chicago Defender from 1916 through the mid-1930s and for the Chicago Tribune from the late 1940's until his death in 1951.The date of his birth is uncertain. Obituaries state his age in 1951 as anywhere between Simmons' own assertion that he was sixty-three and his oldest friends' statements that place his age nearer to seventy-five. A birth date of June 201878 in Greenview Mississippi is listed in the earliest inventories of his papers produced by the Harvard University Archives. A passport appliction holds a 1918 certification of birth signed by his parents that state the year and place of his birth as 1881 in Macon Mississippi." ‎1890. Original photograph. Very Good. The boy is dressed in a frilly white shirt large bow tie short pants long stockings and leather high-button shoes his right hand resting on a stool. Oval photograph 3.5" x 2.5" is mounted on heavy card stock 6.75" x 4.75" printed "Anderson Necedah Wis." Written in ink on the verso is "Uncle Newton." The photographer G.W. Anderson is listed in the Wisconsin Photographers Index as active in "1905-1906" We would place this image in the 1890s. Necedah named by the Chippewa Indians lies in Juneau County. Settlers began to arrive in the 1840s. The town became an important lumber center with logs shipped down the Yellow River and into the Wisconsin River to Galena Illinois. <br/><br/> hardcover‎

‎1863. Original photographs. Very Good. Overall size 19.5" x 15.5". Seven portraits in oval windows. The main one of Louisa in 1863 is hand-colored 7" x 5". The other six flank the main portrait and measure 2.75" x 2". On the verso is a handwritten label: "Presented to Louisa B. Stahle by her brother L.Z. Doll September 1st 1863." Louisa Barbara Doll 1826-1878 married Henry J. Stahle. Not much is known of her activities during the Civil War. Her husband on the other hand was accused of consorting with the enemy. Stahle 1823-1892 was editor & publisher of the Gettysburg "Compiler" 1857-1866 described on its masthead as "A Democratic and Family Journal." Following the Battle of Gettysburg July 1-3 1863 Stahle was arrested on charges that he led the Confederates to a house where Federal troops and equipment were hidden; and he was sent to prison at Fort McHenry. He was later released when it was determined that Republicans of Gettysburg had turned in Stahle as payback for his Democratic views on the War. Leander Zacheriah Doll Louisa's brother who presented these photographs to her was born in Maryland in 1842 and died at Baltimore in 1900.
