‎Singapore/ Rangoon: G. R. Lambert & Co./ P. Klier 1900. Hardcover. g to near fine. Folio. 20 heavy stock leaves containing a total of 21 original mounted b/w albumen photographs. Full green pebbled leather with previous unknown owner's initials "K.H." in ornamental Fraktur script in gilt on the front cover with gilt ruling and blind-stamped tooling to both front and back covers. Dentelles and gilt edges of book block. Most of the photographs measure 8 1/2 x 10 3/4" five of which are accompanied by a handwritten ink caption in French pasted below. Two smaller photographs mounted together on one of the leaves measure approx. 4 1/4 x 5 1/2" each.<br /> <br /> This evocative collection of photographs contains images of environments people and landscapes primarily taken in the areas of Singapore and the nearby Johore now Johor Baru Malaysia by the photography studio of G. R. Lambert & Co during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Of the 21 images present 16 can be attributed to Lambert with 9 containing the studio's blind-stamp in the lower right corner of the image. These nine plus one other image are numbered and captioned in English in the print. Subjects shown include Singapore Botanic Gardens including traveler's palms and Victoria amazonica water lilies The Central Police Station possibly the Teutonia Club or the Hotel De l'Europe local Malaysian villages and people Minangkabau merchants Batak villages a Chinese temple elephants Chinese merchants the Sultan Abu Bakar State Mosque in Johor Baru built 1890-1900 Gamelan musicians and local fruits still life.<br /> <br /> The 3 final images were taken in Burma and are captioned in the image in English and credited to P. Klier Rangoon. These include a "Burmese Poay" pwe a "Festival Cart" and an early image of the statues of the Buddha at the Shwedagon Pagoda in Yangon Rangoon. The two small photographs together on a single leaf preceding the final three are un-attributed and un-captioned but appear to show village life in Burma and are likely from Klier as well.<br /> <br /> The first image in the album captioned in French believed to show the exterior of the Teutonia Club in Singapore is included again later in the album in a print of the same size without the accompanying caption. <br /> <br /> The images based on context and photographic research have been dated to the period between the 1880s and the first decade of the 20th century. These images provide invaluable insight into the rapidly shifting landscapes urban areas and demographics in Singapore during the late colonial period.<br /> <br /> Binding with some rubbing and light cracking to corners. Some plates with some light foxing to the margins with photographs unaffected. Images clean and vibrant. Some oxidization to the edges of some photos but these are overall quite good prints when compared to a few other copies of these images which we have seen. Plates with some rippling over the years. Binding still relatively tight. Binding in good plates in very good- images in very good to near fine condition overall. Born in Germany Gustave Richard Lambert 1846-1907 first opened his photographic studio G. R. Lambert & Co. in Singapore in 1867. Although he left and returned to Singapore multiple times throughout his career by the 1880s his studio had become the dominant and most prolific photographic firm in Singapore and would remain so for a least two to three decades. By this time Lambert had been appointed official photographer of King Chulalongkorn of Siam and Sultan Abu Bakar of Johor. In 1887 Lambert himself had returned to Europe and left the firm in the hands of Alexander Koch. The firm expanded at various times to include locations in Sumatra Bangkok Delhi and Kuala Lumpur. By the turn of the 20th century G. R. Lambert & Co was said to have amassed one of the largest photographic archives in East Asia with a total for around 3000 images of Singapore and Malaysia as well as Borneo and Sumatra. To capitalize on the rapid increase of tourism by the late 1890s the firm started to produce photo-postcards the first to so in Singapore and by 1908 reportedly sold about a quarter million of them per year. In 1918 the firm finally closed its doors due to steadily declining business from the world of amateur photography.<br /> <br /> German photographer Philip Adolphe Klier c. 1845- 1911 is considered one of the earliest major photographers to shoot in the area of Myanmar/ Burma. He emigrated to British colonial Burma sometime around 1865 initially working as a watchmaker. A self-taught photographer by 1880 he had moved with his family to the Capital Rangoon Yangon and had established a photography studio there. Klier had wide ranging interest in documenting both local Burmese and colonial daily life and culture in the region. By the turn of the century Klier's work was comprised of many hundreds of images.
